Well, I currently have my permit, and I plan on taking the road test soon in NYC. Can anybody describe how bad it is? I heard that not a lot of people pass on their first try... is that right? How long is it? Does anybody know how many points you need to pass? Any and all help is appreciated biggrin.gif

Stay calm. BEST advice out there. I took a driver's course that teaches driving, and at the end goes over the road test route RIGHT before the time of the test. I can get my license in a few weeks, and I can't wait for that review, it'll make it easier on me.

Mine was easy. Got 100% on first try.
Same with motorcycle license.

Dunno if the rules are different, but here in CA you start off with 100 points (100%), and get deducted for every error you make. I don't remember passing score, but it's probably like 85.

Just make sure you're relaxed but paying attention, and make it obvious you're checking your mirrors (don't just keep your head still and your eyes on your mirror, turn your head so that the tester knows your checking your mirrors). You can get deducted points for simple things like that.

I took a course! They let me do everything like parralell parking, K turns, cone tests as many times as I wanted. The road test was the only thing that I needed to pass.

It is nice because you get a price deduction off your car insurance.

Yeah, I took a course too (I got my certification of 20 hours of supervised driving and student certificate of completion which are both documents you need to take the road test). One of my friends told me that she took it 3 times and didn't pass till her third try... so it seems a bit hard. Does anyone know how long is it?

Also, this may seem a bit off topic, but I know you have to bring your own car to the test. I really don't want to take my dads car considering it's a pretty big highlander, and I've only practiced on small cars, so does anyone know how to get a car for the road test? Or would they be willing to lend it to you?

You could go to a driving school. The course I took had the path review, and use of their car.

I'm from OR.
I had to get at least 80 pts, I got 95 pts.
I easily passed because my sister took me to a nearby small town w/ very few traffic to take the test. ph34r.gif

You're from NYC? Wow... good luck.
Recently I heard from the news on TV, NYC have the worst and meanest drivers in whole USA.

^ That's true. Heading to a place that's smaller helps, especially if the route is mostly highways.

Yup I heard that too. There are crazy drivers out there. Especially when you're downtown with all those yellow taxi cabs. They'll honk you for not going when the lights turned green for 1 sec, and sometimes they'll just even crash into you to tell you to get moving.. dry.gif I'm glad I don't drive there.

Toronto's not that much better either. I'm so nervous. I need to finish getting my highway which includes tests in the local roads... sad.gif

Well, I'm not from the city- I live in Brooklyn, haha...
But if you take the road test for a NY drivers license, you can take it anywhere as long as it's in NYS, right?

the course u took should have provided u with the car u learned in for the test...

otherwise yes you'll have to bring your own car.

The thing is, the car I practiced in was a Sonata, and the car my parents have is like this huge highlander. Do you think I could take that to the road test? I tried practicing in it before, and I just can't control it. Do you know if I could rent a car for the road test?

u should contact the driving course/school to use their car for the test.

Like I said, u bring your own car, by whatever means u choose to. So if u used the driving school's car, or your own, or a rental, it doesn't matter. Just make sure it isn't a motorcycle or a big rig truck lol

Forgot to mention, that whatever car you choose, make sure on the day of the test that the turn signals, head lights, and brake lights all work.

Boston is up there along with NYC X_X
And what's worse is we have crazy j-walkers. At least in NYC, people wait for the cross signal at the crosswalk. Here, they just run out into traffic whenever and WHEREVER they feel like. *dies*

Thanks, so as long as it's a working car, lol.

Does anybody know like what exactly they test you on the road test? I know they make you go over turn signals, and k-turns and parallel parking, but what else?
