Well, I actually have a couple of questions...

First off, the mileage is like 182,000...is that really bad? >.< If it is, how long before my car dies?

Second, I got an American car (a Ford Taurus), why do people frown upon American cars (as opposed to Japanese ones)? Does it take up a significantly larger amount of fuel?

Thanks! smile.gif

I don't know much about cars, but I do know that's a high mileage.
Japanese car are sterotypically better quality, like their engine, cheaper on gas.
Ford, GM and other american cars cannot come to par, there's a reason why they are going bankqupt.
And trust me, it's harder to sell a american car than a japanese car, with that say...i bet you got some deal right? under 6000?

you're generalizing things a bit much...

180k is good or bad depending on how much you paid and how well the car was taken care of. Probably should've done a bit more research before buying.

and plus, only GM and Chrysler are Bankrupting. Ford is actually pushing very hard and is now rising big time with the new launch of the new Fiesta in the USA.

well i'm ok with ford and gm
but i dont like the taurus specifically.

180k is a lot for a car. i think a lot of people prefer cars that are lower than 100k?

^ Horsepower doesn't matter that much if the car itself isn't that great. My dad has a Ford Taurus and he hasn't gone a month without something breaking so far...quality sucks. My mom's civic however, has not had any issues so far.

FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily) or (Found On Road Dead) tongue.gif

Congrats. 190K isn't bad if the previous owner kept the car running well and did scheduled maintenance in it. Otherwise, 190K is nearing the Ford car life expectancy.

1. 182k miles isn't necessarily bad assuming that the car is over 17 years old ish. And another note, the car may have a lot of miles but the engine could've been swapped for a lower mileage one meaning you have a longer lifetime on it, but that's all on you to know since you bought it.. Eventually though, with 182k miles, you will need to replace mainly suspension parts, because the worn parts may cause your car to be unstable and it'll be unsafe to drive.

2. People tend to nag on American cars because they tend to break down more than Japanese cars. In addition, their cars tend to be less fuel efficient then Japanese ones. However, new American cars as of good quality as the Japanese cars now.

As I have stated, this is ford of the old. After Alan Mullaly took over the company, ford is on the rise. Remember, Mullaly is the same man who controlled Boeing for many years.

I think most Taurus' were similar to Honda Accords in terms of fuel economy, so it shouldn't be too bad. Maybe 23-26 MPG mixed (city/hwy). Do you know what year your car is?

1. 182,000 is really high for any car... there are cars that make it well beyond that point, but that is only if the proper maintenance has been done. I've worked on plenty of cars that have 200k+ miles on them. Some look like they are going to croak, and some look like champs!

2. This kind of ties in with the second part of your first question... a lot of times, people frown upon american cars because they are not as reliable and gas efficient as japanese cars. Fuel efficiency has gotten better with american cars, but that doesn't stop the bad designs, and cheap parts that go into the car. There's a reason a couple of the "Big 3" american car companies are about to croak.
Have you ever heard the phrase that people use for Fords? F.O.R.D. = Found On Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily.... etc. etc... there's a reason for it...

but for a first car... i wouldn't worry too much... you could have done alot worse smile.gif

mellow.gif I don`t get how year would matter. More like how much I paid for it! I would stay clear of a anything 110k+ regardless of what year it was.

To be honest, my family (and extended family) have had terrible experiences with Ford vehicles (in the 90s). I had two uncles with Ford Taurus and both died due to transmission issues (with proper maintanance too). One had also bought a Ford Contour, which had several emissions related problems all within the four years he's owned it, and a Ford Windstar which is still alive today, only because its not being driven much at all.

My Dad was also a Ford guy too, but the cars were just too irreliable back then and my dad switched to Japanese (Mazda and Toyota) and has been happy since.

For me, I prefer european cars...

Speaking of mileage, as long as the car has been maintained and well kept, it shouldn't be that big of a issue. My Volvo S70, has 204,000 miles and it still runs like a champ, while still on the original engine, original transmission and original turbocharger. The exterior still looks very shiny and no faded or oxidized paint...

take it to a ford dealer or a reputable mechanic to get it checked. hopefully you didn't buy a lemon.

assuming you have checked the service log book of the car and it was all good, you shouldn't run into too much problems mechanically.

but damn 182k O_O
