I don't know much about cars, but I definitely want a car that looks really nice at the right price before even considering the other features.
Of course, I emphasized that I'm a poor college student so I'm not looking for a BMW or Lexus or any of that...

Heres what I'm currently looking at:
Nissan Altima (Lease: $200/mo)
Toyota Camry
Honda Civic

I also really like cars like Infiniti G37 Coupe, and a lot further out there on the price range: Lexus SC430

What are some good affordable models?

Check the insurance rate for those cars to see how much you'd have to pay. You will most likely have to get full coverage insurance for the car since technically it isn't yours but the leasing company's.

Maybe check out the Accord or the Hyundai Sonata?

Out of the one's you've listed, I think the Altima looks real nice. The Camry ain't bad either, the civic... eh.. I see too many of them along with the accords.

I would go to the dealers and try driving the cars. See which you feel comfortable driving in and which looks nice to you. Check the cars websites and see what colors are available etc. and also see what kinds of offers are available

good luck!

If you REALLY want a Lexus, get a used older-model LS400. Reliable, and pretty good on gas overall. IMO, if you want to keep more money in your pocket, don't lease, buy used and work from there. Civics are always the best option for that.

And about the Altima, I've worked around them a lot, and I think they're pretty solid overall.

^^^ Agreed, never lease. A friend of mine bought his car leased. Until this day, he still pays for it, and regrets it. For on topic, I recommend Honda or Toyota.

Are you open minded about buying a used car perhaps a few years old?

+1 on this. It's not TOO hard to find a nice car used that won't destroy a college student's pocket. I have intent on buying a mid-late 80's Toyota sedan, and using it when I go to trade school. What I'm looking for has a lot of options to look nice while being easy on the pocket (or get mass power gains...). Of course, my path (like many others in this part of the forum), takes a lot of interest in cars, and a bit of money in the beginning to get off the ground.

That`s good advice and you should lean on this option first. Leasing rarely turns out the way you want it to.

leasing can work if u know how to control the situation
ur friend probably negotiated wrong and of course hes still paying if he has the car.....thats what a lease is....
but i agree that u should go for a used car
u can keep it for as long as u need rather than giving it up at the end of the time period
OR if something good happens u can sell the car and upgrade (which u cant really do with a lease without penalty)

plus if ur new with credit ur interest rate will be really high and u wont ever be able to get a low interest rate for ur lease
to compare when i turned 18 and bought a car my interest rate was about 11%
last year i have a lease i got for another car my interest rate was 1.9%

payments were 335 for 5 years (about 15k "borrowed") vs 400 for 2 years (about 9k "borrowed")

Owning > Leasing

imho

Also, I say just buy a beater and paint her pretty, a lot of things can just buff right out.

Why throw more money down the drain for something that only looks pretty *sigh so vain.

Can you have the prettiest car out there and it break down on you every other day?
Can you just take public transportation or bum rides for a while until you can just buy a beater?
