wake up a little bit earlier and have a light breakfast like some toast and some orange juice. It's not much, but it'll definitely give you some energy.

It depends how long you are going to jog / swim for. Are you trying to lose weight? According to this video by the college health guru that jogging in the morning before eating breakfeast increases its effectiveness by 300%. Because with no food (energy) to drain from the body will start taking the energy from your stored boday fats helping you lose the fat. If you do jog or swim on an empty stomache its not to say you're not eating breakfeast either. You can jog for 30 minutes then eat. Its not like most people eat right away when they wake up.

edit: oh yeah and heres the link to the vid =P

eat fresh.

Your muscle cells use more calories, so if you're running low on energy, your body starts burning muscles first.

Are you sure? I've never heard of muscles burning. If your muscles become fatigued they recover and become even stronger (weight training).

What you said is kinda true. When you exercise muscles, they basically develop tiny tears and rips, and when they are rested well enough, they become stronger. But I don't think we're talking about the same thing. *sigh* Fine, fine, I'll find sources.

"The human body is designed to lose muscle mass in an event of starvation."

http://weight-loss.fitness.com/advanced-we...ation-mode.html
"That's it. When the switch gets flipped on, this is called the starvation protection mechanism (SPM). This SPM has been literally designed through thousands of years of being a human race. In the past, food wasn't readily available and so your body had to preserve the most precious caloric tissue on the body, which for good or for bad, is fat. Your body is designed to store fat and burn muscle when it goes into starvation mode, which is the opposite if you want to stay slim and trim."

Read the 3rd paragraph: http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/reprint/68/1/1.pdf

If you want to search more, type in "starvation lose muscle mass" or something like that in the search engine.

i like how you referenced the Am J Clin Nutr. smile.gif

"burning" muscle is definitely not a scientific term.. so use "fatigued" instead

in the event of starvation, which is a lack of dietary carbohydrates for a specific period of time, the body uses stored muscle for energy via gluconeogenesis (between 3-8 hours) THEN free fatty acid stores (8-24+ hours). I would like to state that before muscle is used, skeletal muscle glycogen and liver glycogen are used up first.

breakfast is VERY important.
i would definitely recommend eating something
before your morning exercise.
when you skip breakfast, your body starts feeding on itself

& that'll break my heart, so i won't even start...

I usually eat a health bar or bring a health bar on my morning jog. I realize that when I do my jog in the morning on an empty stomach I lose motivation to continue or feel dizziness rather quickly. In a way, I feel that my jog is less effective. However, following intense work out, I eat to replenish my body, i.e. provide insulin. This is especially important!

Good Luck!
