if you plan on buying an unlock phones to use with t-mobile do remember one thing. if you enjoy using the web, t-mobile's 3g network is at the 1700mhz which most unlock phones dont support. if you dont mind, you will still be able to surf with EDGE/2G speeds.

I would suggest the T-mobile G1, which is what i have right now. It's not big but it's not small either, the large screen size is definitely my favorite and the qwerty is nicely spaced out. going on the web with this phone is awesome!
Im also using a Blackberry Curve 8320, this is one of the best phones I have ever had. Very easy and useful but if you're not a fan of candy bar qwertys then you can just ignore this. Alot of people like sliders or swivels like the sidekick that you have.
this is a list of phones that i think would fit your criteria,
G1 (useful, functional & fun)
Nokia N97 (sexy)
LG Prada 2 (sexy)
Nokia E75 (i think this one is quite ugly but it'll get the job done)
Sony Ericsson X1 (uses Windows Mobile, im not a fan of that but you might like it)
HTC Touch Pro (uses WinMo)
candy bar phones with qwerty:
Blackberry Curve 8900 (new model)
Blackberry Curve 8320 (previous model but works just the same, and price is cheaper)
Blackberry Bold
Nokia E71
Nokia E63
HTC Snap (WinMo)
