I know there are many Koreans moving to the Philippines to study or for vacation. I was wondering what you all think about Filipinos. I know they consider themselves as Asians, but many of them don't look Asian at all. When I went there on vacation I stand out bad because they look so different from Koreans. Some look like Koreans but most look like Hawaiian islanders, American blacks, or Spanish. I feel they are very foreign from us. Here's some pictures of interesting Filipinos

How do you define Asian yourself? It seems to me (from what you've posted) that you've categorized Filipinos as not Asian, based on their appearance. I'm not saying you're in the wrong, I would like to know your other reasons, if you have any other.

Have you taken account culture? Their way of living? You've only just talked about how they look. What about Cambodians then? Many Cambodians look like Filipinos. Is it because Cambodia has kept a culture similar to the other northern Asians that you haven't mentioned them in this post? The Philippines were conquered by the Spaniards, of course, and that has greatly influenced their culture. Christianity, being the dominant religion, as opposed to Buddhism. The language's been greatly transformed with the use of many Spanish words as well. What else?

What are your thoughts, other than their physical appearance that makes them not so Asian?

They just look and seem foreign to me, as if they are from a different race. Not like how I feel when I see Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, or Vietnamese. We are different but I still identify with them as Asian race. But for Filipinos, i'm not really sure because they are much more different. I know because I went there for vacation

And for Cambodian. They still look more Asian to me and they still practice Asian culture. And Cambodian language sounds Asian, but Tagalog and other Filipino languages do not have an Asian sound.

Hmm, for testing at school, there's a section where you have to put in
your race, and Filipinos get there own bubble, so I guess they can be both
Pacific Islander and Asian? I really have no idea, since well lots of Filipinos say
they are Asian, others say they are Pacific Islander.

I think most consider themself Asian, but I was wondering if we consider them Asian. Before I went to the Philippines, I was in the middle, but now I'm not sure if I consider them Asian at all. There was many Koreans there in the Philippines and they stood out physically, and I could also see the cultural difference was big too. Filipinos seems more undisciplined and less structured, but I don't mean that's a bad thing.

I'm Filipino.

I just think of us as being the Asian Transformers. More than meets the eye.

From their geographical location, I would say yes, they're asian.
And when you mean "they don't look asian at all", do you mean by the typical asian (chinese, korean, japanese, vietnamese, etc) features? Just because they don't fit a particular stereotypical "look" doesn't mean they're not asian O__O

Just my opinion ..

Asia is a frigging large continent. And I do think that some people, only considering Korea, Japan, China or all the other ones you've mentioned that you consider Asian is quite naive. What about South-Central Asia? India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. That's Asian as well. It's so different from Eastern Asia and South East Asia, but it's still Asian. Different cultures, but still Asian. People say they are Indian. But they can also say they are Asian.

You can't really say less structured and undisciplined, and then adding "not a bad thing" to it, without offending some people. Of course, you can think that way. It is a third world country. It's poorer than Korea, poorer that China, poorer than Japan. Poorer, and thus, people are different. But it doesn't mean that it's not Asian either.

Having been conquered by Spain, of course that's changed so many things in that country. The language, the food, the religion, even the whole mix and how people have ended up looking. I do like how Hermit has said it, it's Asian Transformers.

Well racially, I mean I don't think they are full Asians. Probably mixed with other stuff because if you look at Vietnamese people which is right by the Philippines, the people look like other Asians. So it shows that Filipinos must be mixed with some non-Asian race.

Oh, and if I may add, more along the lines of the Autobots, generally speaking, not the Decepticons.

there was a thread like this waaay back then and it seriously got out of hand.

im filipino and i do not look like the people you posted.
i find it hilarious why you seriously think we all look like that.
i call myself asian because i am. not because my country "is next to the pacific island" -___-
or because the united states census told me so.

Whats wrong with those people I posted? They don't all look alike. They look different from each other. When I went there, these are the kinds of people I saw. In Manila, people do look similar to Thai or Vietnamese, but further away in the islands, people look like those that I posted.

Well, it's kind of logical that filipinos don't look asian, well at least, not asian as in Chinese, Korean, Japanese...

first of all, Asia is quite a big continient laugh.gif and ofcourse people look different...

I've always divided Asia into three groups:

the part where people have a fair skin and slantier eyes: China, Japan, Korea, taiwan, etc.

the part where people have a dark brown skin: Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Thailand, etc.

And the part where people have a light skin and have western features: Afghanistan, parst of Pakistan, Iran, Irak, Arabia etc.

But I don't know, for a long time The Philipines was occupied by Spain and the US. Which may explain why many philipinos look hispanic. Besides that, in the past many Chinese people migrated to the Philipines due the aprovements of maritime trade...So yes, I think the Philippines have always been a great mix of cultures

Sorry, this is how the Filipinos we were with would always describe Filipinos. When we were driving and people would run into the street or people would stand in the street and block traffic. And other people would throw their trash everywhere. The people we were with would always say "Most Filipinos are undisciplined"
