I have one! I see it all over fansubs, and it drives me nuts. They seem to think a double negative is okay, i.e., "Although/Even though I love him, but I have to let him go." ONE negative, people. ONE! That's all you need. Even if the double negative is grammatically correct in Korean/Japanese/Taiwanese, you are INTERPRETING, dammit.

"That looks real nice" as opposed to "that looks really nice". Sigh.

Nice deductive fallacy.

I think you are misinterpreting the purpose of this thread.

I also think you shouldn't use unsupported statistics.

To label those who support correct spelling and good grammar as 'elite' is, in every sense of the word, 'childish' and bewildering.

If you think about it, it's kind of sad and funny that people who are grammatically correct and know how to spell would be labeled "elite". I mean, in this day and age, aren't we all supposed to know how to spell and speak correctly? sad.gif

I never realized until recently how annoying it is when people replace words that begin with 'th' with 'd'. Someone pointed this out already but it's annoying to read. 'dey' 'dis' 'dat' 'da'. tears.gif

Most of my personal peeves have already been mentioned:

1) Their vs. there vs. they're
2) It's vs. its
3) You're vs. your <--- This one is one of the most annoying mistakes.

What annoys me even more is when people get angry at me for correcting them. They get all defensive and 'hate on me' when I'm trying to help them out. It's a pitiful situation, to be honest.

To contribute to the thread, has anyone mentioned incorrect plurals? e.g. Sheeps, fishes .... *twitch*

agree with this.. the "your" thing is the dumbest mistake to me since this was one of the first grammar rules that we all learned in school

My manager wrote down a list of objectives for me to do.
She said: "put the boxes on the Cornal"... instead of corner..

It's so painful. I work at an accounting firm with some pretty high-profile clients and the owner, who is a CPA (though that doesn't guarantee anything in terms of English skills, to be fair) and an intelligent, well-educated man in his fifties, makes all those stupid mix-ups with their/there/they're, it's/its, to/too, and you/you're in every single e-mail he sends and even in formal letters to clients. He also overuses ellipses so much you'd think they were going to be banned tomorrow. It's like he can't stand to actually use a plain period or a comma when he e-mails everyone in the company. I really wish somebody would quietly edit everything he types before it's sent out to anyone. The firm billing specialist is a repeat offender with those homophones, too. It's amazing how many people still mix these up far into adulthood despite all the drilling in elementary school and middle school English classes to make the different uses clear. It's just not that confusing and such a basic bit of grammar. Native speakers should have no excuse.

I also hate seeing people try to use whom and then use it when it actually should just be who. Hearing "Whom is it?" or "Whom is asking?" hurts my ears. Also, saying things like "It's just between you and I" to sound more grammatical when "between you and me" is actually both more common and correct bothers me. I don't care if people use who all the time and never whom, even in formal situations, but it's a definite pet peeve of mine when people use the wrong pronoun for the sentence in an attempt to sound more formal or smarter while actually seeming the opposite to anyone who knows her grammar.

I don't mind many mistakes that much, since I'm used to seeing them and a lot of mistakes are not quite so basic or just colloquial, but the really basic things we learned when first learning grammar and using incorrect grammar to try to sound smarter bother me a lot.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

First off, I LOVE THIS THREADDDDDDDD! That's coming from a wannabe grammar nazi.

Anyway, I'm not sure if these two have already been covered but they seem to be such common mistakes.

1. Think vs. Feel

- People can't feel an opinion, they can only think it.

2. Who vs. That

- Individuals are referred to as "who," not "that."

I'm sure there are a few people here that feel the same way as you.

It bothers me when people respond with "Is it?!?" to a statement that doesn't work with it, such as "I can't believe the federal government is planning to cut funding for post secondary education."

More:

- "Whose" instead of "Who's" or vice versa
- "It's" instead of "His/Hers" when referring to a person
- Removal of vowels from words: "ht it whn ppl d ths!!!!"
- Spelling people's names incorrectly (e.g., Hyung Joon vs. Hyun Joong / Silvia vs. Sylvia / Marc vs. Mark) - Just disrespectful, especially when it's shown on the same page.
- Improper capitalization: "today i Went to the doctor For a Check Up"

Canadian-specific pet peeves (exempt on forums/internet but for academic writing in Canada):
- Using "checks" instead of cheques
- Colors/favorites instead of colours/favourites
- "Ain't" instead of "is not"

I could go on. I admit I'm quite the grammar elitist. My friends call me the grammar police and ask me to check how their screen tags look on MSN ("Is this okay, grammar police officer?" haha).

Definately has to be definitely my peeve.

If you go to Google News and search with this misspelled word, you can see that it gets over 390 hits! mad.gif

And, over 80 pages of hits if searched under Soompi's Google custom search!

Your ≠ You're. I used to find that error really irritating, but I don't let it bother me anymore. Something I still find a little annoying is using an unnecessary amount of periods between or at the end of sentences ._.

I can't be too picky about grammar though because my grammar isn't exactly perfect and I do love removing vowels from words when typing on the internet. I abuse that style of writing like no one's business. I sometimes misspell words on purpose too, but only when making fun of something/someone >.>

I laughed really hard yesterday when I was at a different forum. One girl used "peace/piece" incorrectly. She wrote something like, "....is a peace of great American culture." I couldn't stop laughing when I read it. I then thought of this thread.

Oh my word. This one is definitely another pet peeve of mine. I always tell people to break it down. De-finite-ly.

This isn't really spelling or grammar, but I hate it when people mix up ' and " for feet and inches.

I was just looking thorugh the notebook buying guide in the tech section and someone was asking for a 13' MacBook Pro.
And in the height discussion thread, some girl said she was 5"4'.

I've been seeing a lot of people say "piece of mind" lately. You can tell they mean "peace of mind" because of the context, because "piece of mind" doesn't make sense...

LOL I thought I was almost alone on this. Grammar and especially spelling is one of my biggest pet peeves. I seriously hate when people type phonetically. Da/cuz/u/b4 etc. all that nonsense is extremely irritating.
