I'm horrible with grammar but my pet peeve is "irregardless."

Amuses me when people say "self-defecating" instead of "self-deprecating."

I hate the word "irregardless," but I am pretty sure it is in the dictionary. I hate when people use double negatives in general, let alone in a single word.

irregardless is a real world, im still not sure how to use it

their/there
your/you're

are the worst =@

it's pretty shocking to see you guys complain about these simple mistakes, hard to imagine adults would have confusion with this, anyone under 17 i can understand but that's where i draw the line

More of general resignation when I see these:

should have v should of
would have v would of
bear (with me) v bare (with me)
a part (of) v apart (of)
prologue v prolouge

It always irritates me that people can't realise the past tense of "sink" is SANK, not SUNK (which is the past participle). So "The ship sank yesterday", not "The ship sunk yesterday". -____- Likewise with "ring, rang, rung".

Sometimes I also see people using "more" when they're trying to do comparatives, such as "more colder". WTF? I also hate it when people go "jealous much?" That's not how the word "much" is used.

And someone please explain why kids like using "Omg PWN!"?

OMG 'of' instead of 'have' when next to could/should/would really annoys me too.

The thing that really annoys me is when people obviously don't know how to spell simple words and it can't be a typo. For instance on another forum I saw someone spell 'rumor' as rumer. I doubt it was a typo since the o and e are on opposite ends of the keyboard. I don't mind spelling mistakes on bigger words or the occasional grammar mistake since sometimes type too fast to think things through, but people who do it all the time really annoy me.

Another thing is using excessive abbreviations. I don't mind abbreviations or some internet meme being used every so often to be cute or funny, but if every other word the person types is one, then it's overkill. Thank goodness for urban dictionary, otherwise I'd probably never know what people were talking about, although I must say I do like the abbreviation "DIAF". It makes me lol for some reason.

I just remembered another one while watching CNTM.

People who say "bad" instead of "badly". "I want to win this competition so bad."

That really grinds my gears.

Me too! I don't like when people use adjectives when they should be using adverbs, like "good" vs. "well."

U guyz r awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is kewl and it made me laff.

Did anyone else cringe?

I can't stand text talk on computers. It bugs me a bit in text messages, but I can tolerate it. And overusing ! (which I used to be guilty of). The most annoying thing, I think, is when people insist on spelling perfectly simple words completely phonetically. I want to pull my hair out...

But who am I to talk. My grammar can be pretty bad when I'm talking/typing casually, so please forgive me if I set off a few landmines in the future... haha.

You have no idea how many conversations my best friend and I have over grammar/spelling mistakes! (She's currently an editor, so she tells me about some of the hilarious articles that come her way.)

Honestly, most of the grammar mistakes that really bother me have been listed here, but one that I can't stand (and see FREQUENTLY) is setup vs. set up (same with login/log in, etc). I can't stand it when people say, "I setup the [insert-whatever-here]." It's like... AHHHHH... it's set up!! >_> But yeah, such a common mistake that I don't ever say anything about it... I just die a little inside, haha.

oh i always say "she never showed up". I didn't know that's wrong use of grammar mellow.gif

No I don't think that's incorrect usage of grammar. Either "she never showed up" or "she didn't show up" is perfectly fine. Except I would say "she never" carries a tinge of resentment, while "she didn't" doesn't. At least that's how I use it.

I hate it when people use "person" and "people" interchangeably! Like "I went out with three person today" or "I saw lots of person". It's really grating on the ears, person is singular and people is plural. Another thing, I don't like people typing without capital letters. some people seem to think it's nice but i don't.

All my pet peeves are already listed:

1. to, too, two
2. their, there, they're
3. your and you're
4. definitely and definately

Another that annoys me is "conversate." This is NOT a word. I always try to correct them with "converse," but gave up when they continually use it.

Honestly, I can forgive the occasional typo or some breaking some confusing/tricky rules, but there are just some common mistakes that really bother me. It really makes me wonder if anyone takes that person seriously. For example, I hate when people use the word "mines" when they really mean "mine"! Ugh! I also hate when people spell "definitely" with an a, "definately." It's not a word. Also, in general, I dislike "text speak," U instead of you, r instead of are, etc.

What are some of your grammar/spelling pet peeves?

I dislike gratuitous use of the comma.
I dislike that it seems the semicolon doesn't exsist anymore.

I <3 the semicolon; I actually use it all the time.

ETA: I didn't do that on purpose, haha.

Not exactly the same category, but I hate corporate-speak.

I use it as much as the next dude, but it's like a dull numbing pain that never entirely goes away.

Me too! I hate when people say "touch base." Where did that phrase come from, anyway?

I am a strong defender of the semicolon.
In the same vein, I am also a defender of the word "whom."
