(strictly regarding UNLOCKED gsm cell phones)

which brand is better in terms of:

1) build quality
2) call/voice quality---incoming and outgoing
3) features
4) aesthetics
5) reception---better luck with AT&T or T-Mobile?

which brand do you prefer, and why?

It depends on the phone.
High tier phones (expensive ones usually) tend to be more of a better quality (well obviously).
While cheaper phones, tend to has a rather infelicitous quality, and will break in no time.
My friends would use to always compare my D900i with my other friend's U700 and U600.
All I could say is, owned, all three is now dead because of the same problem.

Like I say, it depends on the phone and user really.
Some Samsung phone is better, some LG phone is better.

But IMO both brands has a rather infelicitous battery.
In terms of design, I think Samsung has some pretty nice designs, but the latest LG Crystal is also pretty hawt. So I don't know what to say really.

I suggest researching reviews or complains that people had on the phone that you wanna buy.

But then again, This is just my opinion.

both are good in terms of build quality, i think they're about the same. the battery life isn't great but it will suffice. i have had 3 LG phones and all had excellent call qualities and reception. I like the user interface of LG more than Samsung, and LG's phones are also better looking in my opinion.
