I don't think the topic accurately describes it, but I have an Athlon 64 3200, Venice core and I've been looking around for a new video card. Originally, I had planned to get a Geforce 6800 GS, but with EVGA offering a $20 mail-in rebate, I can get a 7800 GT for about $50 more. Now the question is, would a 7800 GT be overkill for a A64 3200 processor? I mean, it wouldn't be really worth it if the video card was being held back by the CPU.

I think you should worry about if your power supply can handle the video card's demands and what type and speed of video cards your motherboard will take.

Depends on what resolution and level of AA/AF you play at.
Considering your specs (3200+ and 6800GT), I'd say 1280x1024 with some AA/AF (2xAA/4xAF) is your ideal... or 1024x768 with high AA/AF. Any lower in terms of resolution and AA/AF your cpu will bottle neck. Any higher, your GPU will bottleneck. It all depends on what you consider satisfactory. The relationship between GPU and CPU varies depending on whats resolutions and AA/AF you would like to play at.

your CPU will still handle most games just fine...
just get the 7800... otherwise you'll be turning the extra $50 into a bottleneck itself... lol jk
