hey~ so recently my brother decided to put a password on our wireless internet connection, and I was shut out, there was nowhere to put the password in, and when he lifted the password, I was able the access the internet again

half an hour later, he wanted to test out the password thing again and I was locked out, even when he lifted the password again @__@
it's been about 4 days since I can't get online on my computer, and it's really irritating me ;__; (and worrying because we tried using the cable, but I still couldn't get online at all)

any clue what's keeping me from getting online?
(P.S. if you're curious, I'm online because of the family computer downstairs with none of my files/music/etc. on it.. the only other computer other than my brother's laptop that can get online when the password's on) <-- my mom's laptop can't get online, but she can use the cable

Tell him to turn it back on and save the password to a text file or something. Then copy it onto a USB drive. I make a lot of typos when I enter the key so I know I mess it up sometimes.

When you try to connect, scan and look for your network. When you find it and click it, it should ask for a password. The windows or other brand configuration tool should be very similar and would try to make you enter the password when you try to connect.

hm, I did try that
but it never asks for a password

it asks for some configuration key or something but then when we put in the password, it says something like it has to be 10 or 14 bit or something? @__@

the configuration key is probably the dumbed down version of wep key.

Um it should look like FCAD447316 or something

Do you know if you are using the windows zero config utility or the one for the card, like the intel configuration utility?

wep is long and not safe. tell your bro to use wpa2, its more secure and u can pick a password that is shorter and easier to remember. then try entering the new password. or if you have a linksys or netgear router. enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
username: admin
password: password

or username: admin
and leave the password blank

this allows you to get into the router and u can make the changes yourself. (assuming your bro didnt change the password to login to the router)

awdark, we're using intel

umm I doubt my brother changed the password, (what's wpa2?)
I think another problem was that since the password issue, my computer's been telling me that my IP address is being shared or something? Like there's another computer with the same address? o_o
maybe that's also a problem? (who knows >__<)

I usually find the card specific ones a bit troublesome but they work.

I can't think of how to do it right now, but make sure your card is set to use DHCP and not a static IP. Er let me start my xp computer.

Start>Control panel> Network Connections
Select your network adapter, probably intel something.

If you wanted to use windows zero config instead make sure this is checked

This computer is configured to use the netgear utility... which is okay.. sorta

assuming that you are connected and are getting a same/duplicate IP

try going to start->run
type in CMD
type in ipconfig /release
then type in ipconfig /renew

also u can try to power cycle your dsl/cable modem, then when all the lights come on, power cycle your router.

This happened to me before and I tried everything that they stated above but nothing worked. So what I did was that I press that reset button in my router and reinstalled everything again and it worked.

I know I sound like a broken record and I bet you have checked it a dozen times but the network security is blocking you. It might just be MAC filtering or you are failing the security. Find out what security he enabled, sometimes old drivers don't have the same support for the security. When you can't authenticate, it will not give you an IP and you can't go online it simply blocks all data from your computer. Since you had intel, this should work for you http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Des...p;DwnldID=17526 covers all of the intel wifi products and might just make it work. If you want, make a restore point before you install it. Start >Programs>accessories>System tools > System Restore and just make a restore point like "old drivers" so if it goes bad you can undo.

The PSP can only use WEP open system, the DS does not support any form of encryption, most 802.11B cards support WEP only. My pocket pc supports WPA but not WPA2. The ipod touch supports WPA2 AES but will disconnect if the network name is not broadcasted. Sometimes driver updates will let the computer figure out what security is being used and will properly let you enter the password.

my mom says she'll take it to her office tomorrow and plug it into their network thingie to see what's going on
because it's kinda difficult to see what's going on when you can't see everything :s
