HP6 is coming out this week!! Plus, I rewatched the LOTR Trilogy yesterday, and noticed some stark similarities between the two movies.
So I decided to make a poll.. I'm sure there have been numerous polls casting HP against LOTR, but I haven't seen any around soompi, so here it goes. (=

In all honesty you can't really compare the stories.

JK Rowling and like most other authors were influenced by Tolkien's work.

They share a similar storyline in the sense that it is "the raise of the hero" type of writing style? I can't really remember the technical term sweatingbullets.gif

In epic-ness and classic story I would have to vote for Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. But I have to say the book at times can be boring and a drag to read. I'm still on the second book. But the movies really did justice in capturing the essence and really story of the fight to save Middle Earth and destroy the ring.

I love Harry Potter and the books are just awesome. Once you start reading you can't put the book down. I can't wait to see the movie this weekend.

Anyways I voted:
Storyline - LOTR
Actor - Elijah Woods - by far the much better actor
Overall - LOTR - it is just too Epic

first of all, the picture is not sauron. those are elves of the first age that went to fight sauron. find a picture of the eye.

the whole middle earth setting is a lot more epic than harry potter. besides LOTR trilogy there are over 20 books with more stories about the elves and men. all the main characters' lineage can be trace back like several generations. In terms of details, epic-ness and story, lord of the rings wins over harry potter. (I have read the hobbit, silmarillion, the unfinished tales, LOTR trilogy and I am not even close to knowing all the history of middle earth.) Harry Potter is more of a page turner. smile.gif

i think it more rightly to compare harry potter vs. star wars.

Luke Skywalker - orphan, went live with uncle and aunt, normal uprising but has a hidden destiny to battle the dark side
Obi Wan Kenobi - mentor like dumbledore, was the teacher of the bad guy (darth vader/voldemort)
Han Solo and Leia - Ron and Hermione
Darth Vader - deformed like Voldemort, both were prodigies.
Chewbacca - Hagrid...both big and hairy (lol)

This.

my friend predicted the death of sirius and dumbledore because she says the hero always loses their mentor in order to have to stand on their own. which is like classic fantasy storyline.

because you have every prototype of heroes in LOTR

Frodo - the little guy that sacrificed everything for the Shire
Sam- the loyal servant that always believed in Frodo
Pippin- the dimwitted hobbit that made a lot of mistakes but compensated at the end
Merry & Eowyn - both were told to stay behind, both were not afraid of death, went to battle and killed the most evil soldier of Sauron, the witchking
Aragorn- a men destined to be king but lived incognito and unwilling to lead his people until the end
Boromir - a men who so wanted to save his city that he became greedy... but died honorably.
Faramir - his heroism is under appreciated in every way.

look i can go on and on about every character. In 3 movies, the story of LOTR is a lot deeper compare to 6 movies of Harry Potter. For those of us who are not kids anymore and have read both of the series, we are more in tune with LOTR and the trilogy impact us more. I remember crying my eyes out when Frodo left for the undying land. He saved the Shire but not for himself. :snivels:

LOTR is literature; Harry Potter is children's book.

Again it is more aptly to compare Harry Potter with Star Wars, not Lord of the Rings.

omg.. the lotr is a bit complicated to read than hp. but i would say, i would read hp than lotr coz of the things i might not comprehend.

but the similarities you have mentioned? oh my, its quite common in most books... i think a lot of people would claim that hp copied this from this book, blah2x same story... whatever. i think no one, ever can say that this thing is that author's original thought coz every writer has an influence.
