i was in the gym yesterday and my finger got hit in between 2 dumbells and now its swollen. i can bend it and i can feel if i touch it. but underneath the nail is black (i think dried blood).
does anyone know how long it takes for this to heal normally? i just cant bend it too much i think because its swollen. i put ice on it but the swelling didnt cease.

Oh, man. That really sucks. I would suggest that you put a finger splint on it so that it doesn't heal the wrong way. Hm.. That's what the doctors told me when I worked at the hospital. The swelling will go away in a couple of days. You could get it checked out if you are really worried, but I doubt you broke or fractured the bone. The black of the nail is dried blood and will either fall off on its own and grow a new one. There is also the possibility that it will just grow out thought. It depends how bad you jammed it.

I would apply mint massage balm to the swollen finger and massage it to stimulate blood circulation.
It'd pain like hell, but that dead blood has to go somewhere
that's what my sister's ex did to my ankle when i twisted it.
it got swollen, ice didn't work, but after the torture massage, it got better faster.

If the pain or swelling doesn't reduce in a few days, you may want to see a doctor, as this could be a tiny stress fracture of the bone or even vascular damage.

apply ice for 20 minutes and then let your finger rest for 20 minutes, you might have to keep this up for a few days, then start some finger exercises for possible muscle rehabilitation. it shouldn't be too bad, but if your problems persist you should really see a doctor, or your athletic school nurse.
