MIYAZAKI+studio gibli!

films:
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Nausica of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Whisper of the Heart
The Cat Returns
Porco Rosso
My Neighbors the Yamadas
Tales from Earthsea
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
I Can Hear the Sea/Ocean Waves
Grave of the Fireflies
Only Yesterday
Pom Poko
ETC...tell me if i've missed any that should be included!

so my friends are crazy miyazaki friends and seeing as how many of his films i've watched i guess you could count me as one too...

my thoughts:
i think miyazaki is really quite interesting! i've watched all of the ones i've put on the poll choice, cept for the last couple(are they good?);
spirited away, howl's moving castle, kiki's delivery service, princess mononoke, nausica of the valley of the wind, castle in the sky, totoro, whisper of the heart...
i think my favorite is probably howl's moving castle...i dunnno, i kinda like romance involved and this one had the most substantial form of that for me, PLUS the thrill of fanstasy. PLUS i read the book it was loosely based on, ha! whisper of the heart is my second favorite.. a kinda old one, but very cute (though sometimes cheesy, but then again, i love cheese, so it's fine)

what do you think of the films? love, hate, heard of but not watched? how many have you watched? which ones and which is your favorite[vote in poll]?

EDIT: woah, haven't check the topic in a while...glad to see new replies^^

i've seen...4. kinda sad. i swear i'll catch up someday. for favorite, i'll go with kiki since that's the one i've seen the most times. laputa would be second. oddly enough, i watched both of these when i was pretty young. when i watched spirited away and mononoke when i was older, i thought they were good but i wasn't wowed like i was when i was a kid. *shrug* who knows.

i'm still more of a satoshi kon fan, although that can change once i watch more ghibli films.

Cool thread! ^______^

So far the Studio Ghibli films I watched were:
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Nausica of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Whisper of the Heart
The Cat Returns
My Neighbors the Yamadas
Ocean Waves
Grave of the Fireflies
Only Yesterday

I think you forgot:
Grave of the Fireflies (which is an epic film. if you haven't seen it, you should go see it right NOW!)
Only Yesterday (which was a nice refreshing film)
Pom Poko (which i've never seen)

Anyways, Ghibli is definitely cool! I saw My Neighbor Totoro before I even knew what anime was and I was mesmerized by it! I had never seen anything like it! I never forgot the one scene in the movie where the little girl gets lost trying to get to the hospital to see her mom. And I later found out what Totoro was and I was like 'cool'. It was like anime had been a part of my life before I even knew what it was! biggrin.gif

Anyways, my fave is Kiki's Delivery Service because I've just loved the story. Castle in the Sky because it was the most 'magical' for me with the haunting music and 'a castle in the sky' and the protective romance between the two main characters. And Whisper of the Heart just blew me away. It was just such a sweet romance story! The type of romance story I've always dreamed of! The main character's search of 'what she wanted to be when she grew up' echoed my own feelings at the time and the whole story gives off a 'school life' feeling. Ahhh~~ I feel like watching all three films again. =3

Ironically, I only own Spirited Away. I haven't gotten around to seeing Pom Poko, Porco Rosso, or any of the films after Howl. Maybe I should...

I read the book (and the sequel) based on Howl's Moving Castle too! It was a cool read. I also know Kiki's Delivery Service is based on a series of Japaneses books. I read the first one which is the only one that has been trasnlated into English. I wish they would translate the rest. The first book was very interesting. I've also heard that Earthsea is based on this huge book series, right? Anyways, yeah!

hahaha, that's ok. yea, i also watched kiki as a kid, i don't remember too much about it, just the cat, lmao. i remember watching spirited away cuz it was on cartoon network [back when they were showing anime, not late at night] as a movie feature. i watched it again recently, during a miyazaki marathon my friends and i had, that's how i watched most of the movies on the list, lol
satoshi kon? i've heard of him and seen some stuff, quite interesting^^
any you recommend?

yay, another person who has watched some! [there don't seem to be that many here:'(]

thanks, i'll add those now...i remember seeing trailers for those, haven't watched them though, definitely will have to!!!

you've watched so many, wow! i've only watched like half of what's on your list!

hmmm, the first one i watched was kiki, i'm pretty sure. i don't remember much, but i remember being really interested in it and watching til the end! it was probably one of the first anime films i ever watched, so nostalgic:)

i totally agree with you on castle in the sky and whisper of the heart! castle in the sky was sooo magical and the characters were really loveable! i just love the pirates, they really brought a random, but humorous, touch to the film. i think the idea of laputa itself is just magical! who doesn't dream of lost cities in the sky? i mean, i did...don't the clouds always seem to give that impression xD?

whipser of the heart on the other hand, had less of the magic/fantasy element, but a lot of heart and magic just in the way the characters interacted with one another. i agree with you, it's the kind of romance that just touches your heart, something you would dream to be reality! it depicts the sweetness of first love, while showing how deep a bond can be formed when you really like someone>_<

hahaha, isn't the book actually quite different? both are really good though! i admit i don't like how a lot of the films are BASED on something, but i still love them because even though that's true, the animation just blows you away with it's sheer imaginative creativity!

definitely watching some over and watching grave of fireflies some time soon:D

he doesn't have many movies, but perfect blue and millennium actress. paranoia agent is also good, but it's a series. paprika is one of his weaker movies but is pretty creative and trippy. i haven't seen tokyo godfathers but that's also supposed to be really good.

Sadly, I've only seen 6 six films. The first movie that I saw was either My Neighbor Totoro (@ school) or Kiki's Delivery Service (Cartoon Network).

Paranoia Agent is good. Kinda messes with your mind though.

I've seen eight of the ones listed. While I loved Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies was the one that really impacted me and touched my heart. It was just so depressing and it broke my heart. It was just so emotional and I don't think I could ever forget it. What devastated me more was the fact it was partly based on a true story. And I love how the fireflies symbolize so many different aspects of the story.

I remember seeing Spirited Away when it came out. I think I was just nine back then. I watched it with my sister. The ending haunted me for years before I started looking for it. I could not forget it. That was my first Miyazaki movie. The one that led me to watch all the other ones. It still has a special place in my heart. So it runs a close second to Grave of the Fireflies.

I couldn't help myself~ I think after watching Howl's Moving Castle I went on a Ghibli spree and hunted down some of the harder to find ones like Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart. The rest I stumbled across here and there. Anyways, definitely go watch Grave of the Fireflies! ^o^

I never get tired of watching Kiki. I think it's the one I've watched the most. Such a cool film. When Kiki looses her magic you get such a feeling of teenage angst (lol) that makes you feel like she feels and it's soo sad!! In the good movie way! tongue.gif And yes, Laputa and 'castles in the sky'. For me, what does me in is the wording. Having 'castles in the sky' is a figure of speech for talking about dreams~ especially the wistful dreams you have as a child! ^o^ The whole movie has that feeling! ooooh~~ it's so awesome! ^^

In Whispers of the Heart, I loove the part at the beginning when they girl and the guy don't really know each other and I dunno what the guy does that the girl gets pissed off at him~~heehee! It's soo funny! XD

Yes, Howl's Moving Castle, the book, was very different. The whole 'magic' part was very very different because in the book Sophie had a type of magic too where she could 'speak' to objects and persuade them to do what she said. That was very cool. And the sequel is very very very different from the movie. (kinda like another story all together) But Kiki's Delivery Service the book is very similar to the movie...from what I remember...lol. But you always get such a different perspective from the book. But yes, the movies are full of magical creativity~~

Oh, Kon~ the guy who made those movies. They are very different from Ghibli movies because I see the Ghibli films as more magical and innocent while Kon's movies are a little...disturbing and psychological.

My fave out of the 4 mentioned above has to be Millennium Actress. I think it was a beautiful and painful love story and yet the end left me all confused. Maybe I should watch it again because I was about 14 (?) when I saw it. So maybe now I would understand it more.

Paprika and Perfect Blue are a bit too....graphic (fake but convincing rape scene in Perfect Blue!!!) and creepy for me to like.

Paranoia Agent was a bit interesting because at the end you understand what happened (in a way) and you go "oooooh"... the OP sequence creeped me out though and maybe it was too long? I think Kon goes overboard with the whole 'distortion' thing sometimes. (*cough*Paprika*cough)

About Tokyo Godfathers...I liked it. It doesn't have as much of the psychological craziness and it's more of a story of the underground life of Tokyo in a way (bums, transvestites...etc) and it also deals with nontraditional families (how they can love and care about each other the same way as other families) so it was nice ^^.

I thought we should share the links to the movies! smile.gif

I had to download Whisper of the Heart in 8 parts and join it with HJ Split. I didn't save the website, but I could look it up for anyone who is interested. You can also watch in on Veoh if you have the special Veoh Web Player installed into your computer, but it's subbed. The one I downloaded in 8 parts is Japanese with English subtitles.

I did find quite a few of the movies on this one website and you can watch it online without downloading:

I've seen...

Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
Totoro
The Cat Returns
Porco Rosso (part of it)
Tales from Earthsea
Grave of Fireflies

And I think that's it. =D My favourite hands down is Princess Mononoke. One of my favourite movies ever. I basically never watch anime but I think Miyazaki is a genius in most repects. I respect him so much, his movies are so beautiful and well directed and deep. <3

His films are amazing, abstract, and put a whole new definition for anime.

first films i watched from him were
howl's moving castle, castle in the sky, graveyard of the fireflies.
Still working on his list of movies though.

Whenever I watch one of his films...well let's just say you'll never look at animations the same way.
The films are genius. I assure you, you will love them!

Grave of the Fireflies made me cry (not that it was bad--it wasn't). The time period and what was happening, and what the kids went through-I was upset for a long time after watching it.

I love Miyazaki Hayao's movies. There is magic in them. and it's not always obvious--it's something you feel. Spirited Away was the first one I bought, about 5 years ago. For my birthday, I finally got my hands on my own copy of Totoro. A lot of people complained that Disney really messed it up, and said how much they hated it, and how the Japanese original was so much better (some people were mnasty about it, too) blah blah , etc. >< I didn't really care about all that. I waited a long time to get it, and didn't want to get it out of library every time I wanted to see it. I watch it both ways, w/ the English cast, and subbed. What I don't know I can't miss, so I'm happy with what I have.

Howl's Moving Castle--yeah, the book was different from the movie. I read the book when it first came out. When I heard it would be made into a cartoon/anime--and by who--I was excited. lol A lot of people hated it (especially the 'American' version/voices), but I didn't. Another thing I like about Miyazaki (especially)/Studio Ghibili movies--is that you see something new every time you watch. I also remember when this came out, Miyazaki san himself said that it was made it for 60-year old girls. ^^; If anyone has seen the original Japanese version--are there any differences between the two--and do they affect the movie? Before I got Spirited Away, I read a lot of nasty (again -.- ) comments from people complaining because they mentioned 'love' in the English version---that Chihiro helped Haku because she loved him. They said that wasn't in the original dialogue, and that it was added to suit 'Western people'. -___-

TOKYO GODFATHERS was very good. I saw it a couple of times when we still had AZN channel. I'd seen most of the anime they'd showed more than once or twice, so I was kind of bored--but I waited to see what was coming up on the day they showed anime--and I saw this. It was totally different.

Tales From Earthsea--did Miyazaki's son do that?

Wow, I never knew that about Spirited Away. Is that true? I always thought Chihiro loving Haku was weird, so if that's true I'm not weird for thinking that. It just seemed awkward. Spirited Away isn't one of my favourite Miyazaki films though.

And yeah, Tales from Earthsea was directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son. I don't know what role (if any) the older Miyazaki played in creating the film though... But I really liked it.
EDIT: I wikipediad it and apparently Hayao Miyazaki played no role in creating Tales from Earthsea, though it's still a Studio Ghibli film. Apparently Goro Miyazaki's father wasn't even on speaking terms with him when he was directing. And I guess the movie got the "Worst Movie" award at some film awards (And he got "Worst Director" award... Wow. I feel bad for the guy. sad.gif )

i LOVE Hayao Miyazaki (and all other Hayao Miyazaki followers) works so much! The art is always sophisticated and tasteful...not some run down, low budget piece. I got my dad to watch Ponyo and Castle in the Sky...he was so amazed with the artwork coz they look so real compared to the other anime he usually catches me watching. My sister LOVES Kiki's Delivery Service a lot! She watched it streaming along with me...and next day i found out she ordered it :X and she watches it like... every month :X

also... Kanada Yoshinori (who worked with Hayao Miyazaki for Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke) just passed away yesterday. He also had major contributions for Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, X among others that i can't remember. great great guy, very talented. He was 57...
