I plan on going to a university in the same city that my parents live in, but I want to dorm to experience college life.. I'm already working hard to make sure I can get plenty of scholarships and some loans to pay off tuition. I'm even going to get a job after high school. I want to be independent and learn how to live without relying on my parents since I'm going to be working a job where I'm going to be distant from them, so I want to be prepared for that.
My hugs hurt, so close your eyes because the hug monster is coming your wayyy. rawr ; ]

Here, I'll tell you why!

A lot of people that commute get lower gpas on average than those that live on campus. That's because they cannot access campus resources like libraries and can't have study groups whenever they want. And it's true, most commuter students do not perform as well.
Hey! would love to meet you guys! Click here please for my 411!

Also would appreciate if you would tell me what I look like to you! You can do that here!

boarding will also give you a lot of life skills as you probably already know...since you'll have to do your own laundry, cooking/dishes, cleaning, grocery shopping, living with others (which isn't always as easy as it may seem) and making ethical decisions/time management
you may already do all these things but doing these things in college are little different than when in high school ^^

Lol if I were your parent I wouldnt let your dorm either, unless you plan on paying for it yourself, why would they shell out the money when they can just keep you at home?

And if you're going to pull the "oh but dorming kids get better GPAs" the easiest response for them is just that it shouldnt matter and you should just try hard.

now, if you had your own scholarship/loan money or whatnot and they still wont let you dorm, why do you care, its your money your life do what you want

with that said, dorming is great.

To be independent does not always mean living away from your parents. You have your whole life to leave them, a few more years couldn't hurt.

As for commuting and grades. I have no idea where that first poster got her stats. We've been commuting to school our whole lives [unless you went to a boarding school]
You are not less free because of commuting. It all depends on your will to join in activities.

Who said commuters cannot access the libraries? I see a lot of commuter students who study at the library because a lot of people living on campus study back in their rooms. If you have rowdy roommates, it'll be hard to get studying done anywhere in your room.

I commute, and if my grades aren't as good as they should be, it is surely not because i don't live on campus. I've seen some really dumb people living in the dorms. It's all about YOU!

Right NOW you can do laundry, dishes, groceries, even if you're parents are asking you to. if you do not have these habits now, you will not have them in the dorms. I've seen some pretty bad kitchens.

Not to say that dorming is bad. It's a great way to meet and make friends, and it's easier because if they live on campus, it's convenient if you want to meet up once in a while.
The only problem i had with commuting was my parents babying me. They're really over protective so sometimes they hinder me from social activities.
Living away from campus, you can also get lazy about social activities, but that depends on how far you live from campus.

Either way, it's all about your own effort, regardless of whether you live on campus or not.
