i didn't do so hot on a midterm and i'm thinking i'd rather take this course again next quarter. however, i didn't know you needed approval to withdraw from a class. the school website says that it's only permitted for serious health or personal problems, but i don't think i have anything quite that serious aside from having to take care of everything at home along with my dog and grandparents since my whole family is traveling overseas. i dunno...should i just make up something? anyone have any experience with this?

you can withdraw from a class but you just get a W on your transcript.
i have two W's because i changed major. i know lots of people who would
rather get a W than an F

what school do you go to that they don't allow you to drop a class without approval first? 0__0 just seems odd to me.

They don't allow easy withdrawal's to prevent students from getting out of a class the easy way if they are doing bad. basically to prevent abusing the system.

You don't want to withdraw too much then the school would charge you extra if you retake the classes.

Not that I know of. then again my school assumes everyone is of an age where they can decide if they should drop a class or not on their own. My uni, and I would have to agree, would rather you drop a class you think you may fail than have that F on your transcript.

I don't know. Just seems odd to me that a university would try to exert so much control over the decisions of it's students. Unless of course CSU is one of those schools where they make you take certain classes your first year or two instead of planning your own schedule. Then I guess it would be quite normal.

For my school, I just click a button to withdraw.

I think it should be same since I go to CSU Sac.

We can withdraw by using the online form within the first few weeks of the class. No W at this point, but after this point you get a W.
After those few weeks, you need the teacher's approval and you can't be failing the class.
Then after those few weeks you need BOTH department approval and teacher approval.

^how many weeks would that be? we're on week 4.

my form does have a note saying that not every department requires the instructor's signature, so i'll have to find out. but it does require writing down a reason and the department approval.

Summer school, it's like ... reaaaally early. Don't you guys have a calendar on your site? Usually it'll say when you can stop withdrawing easily. Like for our summer you could only withdraw for 12 days in June or something like that.
