my laptop works just fine with this cable. I just plug in the sucker and that's that. Dad's HP recognizes the network connection then designates it unidentified network. There's no connection.

Does the router have any security enabled? Most of the time that causes it to stop. If it isn't asking for a wep key or password, the router might have MAC filtering enabled so you would have to add it to the white list in the router
