OMG, Yes I am! Are you?

I'm currently at a CC in NJ, but I'm planning to hopefully transfer to either UCLA, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, American or Texas@Austin. Kean too, but only because my mom wants me to apply there. LOL I want to get out of NJ ASAP. rolleyes.gif

UCLA's program only has film studies basically so I'd do that there. But the other schools I'd concentrate in Screenwriting. I eventually want to become a director/writer/producer so I have full creative control over my projects. laugh.gif

I sent you a PM ^___^
I'm glad someone else here wants to film direct!
I also want to be a director, screenwriter, and producer. I also want to be a talent manager one day. But I'm planning on working in Asia.

I actually JUST graduated with a degree in Film/TV smile.gif (Boston University class of '09) I am not 100% sure which specific avenue I would like to pursue but I prefer producing, editing, and a bit of screenwriting. I am very behind the scenes, don't like the spotlight, and don't like directing.

I am from and still living Boston so I am trying out here as we are building Hollywood East Plymouth Rock Studios next year but not sure what next step to take... I am currently interning at a commercial editing house though and it's great. Need job though! My dream would be to work at WGBH for their children's programming because I love children's programming! I would prefer not to move out to LA as a lot of my peers have done because I abhor the west coast, LA in particular. I am too much of an east coaster at heart and LA would kill my soul. (I have visited numerous times and have deduced as much) so NY might seem a good idea but it is more media journalism and publishing than film...

I studied abroad in London one semester where I interned at an independent production company that produced foreign films always subtitled in English and will probably never see the light of day in America but it was a great experience. If all else fails I may just go to London and try it out.

There ends my life story.

Hmmm I am not that familiar with Mass Art having much of an extensive film program, so I may defer you from applying there, though it is a very nice school. smile.gifI actually applied to Emerson also but got kind of cocky and assumed I would get in, then got wait listed dry.gif It is raising in popularity, and a lot of out of state people are choosing to attend it. Hence its new building additions galore and rising competition to get in.

Personally, my mother would have preferred a more 'practical' career and kind of always hoped I'd change my mind. Our compromise was that I would choose a liberal arts school that had film so if I were to change my major, it wouldn't be much of a problem if I stayed at an all communications school, like Emerson.

However, now that I am trying to find a job I do know there are a lot of Emerson alum who have stayed in Boston to establish business, and give special opportunities to Emerson students only. Such as Brickyard VFX, a special effects house that originated here with an office in LA has an open house for Emerson students only. I had heard it from my boss, who used to work at Brickyard and got me an invite. I'm sure there are a lot of such cases. It's all about connections after all!

Though I had some fantastic professors with extensive careers, I am quite at a loss as to what to do now. But as they will tell you, there is no clear path in film and it all depends on your drive and who you know, so I cannot really give advice that will be entirely applicable because everyone is different. You are required to take humanities, writing, and science courses as core curriculum for all COM students. You must take a concentration where you take 3 classes all relating in some field. I chose English, but it's very flexible. Say you want to learn about Chinese plays. You can take a class on plays at CFA and then a class on Chinese culture in CAS. Just as long as it relates in some way, it counts. I took a mixture of both film and TV classes so I did Film Production I, Video Production II, Digital Editing, TV & Childhood, Producing an Animated Series, Screenwriting I & II, Literature and the Art of Film, Films of Stanley Kubrick, History of American Animation, British Films and British Films in Society (part of London study abroad), among other courses. I did London study abroad and it is mandatory you do an internship in your major, which was very helpful.

That's kind of the long and short of it. Feel free to PM me

that imformation was really helpful. thanks! (:
lol i also applied to emerson and i got denyed. . . figures!

i have to admit, sometimes i feel like im making a gutsy choice by going into flim. like you, my mom has second doubts on me going to school for film or comunications in that matter.

i took tv production for 2 years in high school and ive been apart of this program called "real to reel digital film school" in my city. this year i made my first short narrative. i wrote, directed and edited the whole thing. i worked on it for about a year. after i did it i realized that this really was something i wanted to do, dispite the setbacks and how much time it took.

It takes money, and time, but where would anyone be without their passion and drive? That is all you need to be a filmmaker really. Someone can give you money to make films, and what better way is there than spending your time anyway?

I have heard of that program, I think they showed pieces at the Cloud Place. I attended the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston Fast Forward Program for high school filmmakers, which was a great program and would recommend if you weren't already graduating.

I think BU helped in its own way, it's hard to compare with others I don't know. I also applied to NYU, if you're interested in out of state. Definitely worth a try smile.gif My professor said some people take great stock in hearing if you attended BU when you're applying in LA but I hate LA so that is wasted on me..
