In recent broadcast CNN has shown part 2 of an on serious documentary Black In America. The documentary focus on influential Blacks that exist in are community today striving to make a difference. From Kids living in inner city projects helping others in South Africa to affluent Blacks who are invisible in are society to Black opportunist breaking ground in fortune 500 companies. I can't help but feel inspired to know that people like this exist in this country. One story before the documentary In The Moment speak on events of extreme prejudice. Henry Gates who is a Harvard professor was arrested on counts of breaking an entering and disorderly conduct. Henry returing from China completing a documentary was unable to enter his own home. The door was jam and Henry while on the phone calling for assistance when officers approach the residence. Requesting proof of ID in which Henry was follow into his home and was able to provide. Despite this Herny was still handcuff and was sent to the police station were he was illegally finger print and process. Aftewards the charges were drop against Henry but the humiliation was already done. This event has made national head lines all over the US.In are day and age there is still extreme racial profiling and prejudice are country.

This documentary made me think about events that are happing now in my own life. The question in my head still lenger. What does it mean to be Black and living in America? I can easily answer that question since I am Black myself and have experience acts of prejudice. Also that I live in Florida which is a southern state. On the law books if you have 3/4 Black in your gene pool you are consider Black and must be register Black for race. Now that we have a Black President which made American history people I feel becoming more racially ingnorant then ever. Many political people argue that Barack Obama only speaks those of the Black community fail to forget he is the president. When he address are nation it's the AMERICAN people not just Blacks.Obama attitude is that all Americans become more envolve in well being of this nation. That includes Asian, Whites, Middle Eastern, Native American, etc... This nation is built on people but if the poeple do not care to act then the nation will fail. Those of the Black community have always fight to have an existence in this nation. It seem to be the African spirit to fight but its in every man.

I think about Africa and how much the mother land suffers many don't care. Her children fall victim to a disease that shows no mercy. Africans living in South Africa unable to go school. The only thing that is stopping them is being able to afford a uniform or books. Yet White settlers who are not native are able to afford these accomindation. There are many African activist fighting the rights for South African poeple but why? This is their nation why are they fighting rights to have education and live on their land without poverty?.Just as Africans are helping to make a cause others are damaging. fascist governments and brutal rebel leaders that commits acts of genocide for profits in order to gain power. So many Africans fall victim to their own fellow man due to constant struggle for total control in of land and/or diamonds. Since the days of slavery Africans were willing to sell each other and place them in chains for currency. Despite the misery those who live in Africa and poverty never stop fighting. Never gave up hope and faith of life better then whats in front them. One point Blacks in America had the same attitude but slowly began to lose focus. The civil rights movement was chance to give Blacks a voice. That are ancestors would not be forgotten and their struggle to survive. That will be carry on into future generation. Marthin Luther King walk to White House and made the famous speech "If I Had A Dream." This was time when Blacks in US were willing to stand up and not give a damn about being knock down. Malcom X and Black Panther were ready to fight the good fight even if it means a quicker way to death. This type of passion hardly exist in the Black community today. There is this down fall effect of Black youths willing to settle for nothing and becoming a nothing.

It is true kids born in inner city ghettos or poor families are more likely not to attend college or finish high school. I sorta blame the media and the glorification of "thug life" or living "ghetto" in mainstream media. Hip hop has always been on the controversy of being more of an antagonist to Black community then a protagonist. What means to be Black in American can be define on how Blacks view themselves. I'll admit to throwing in racial slurs and behaving in the stereotypes that plague the Black community. I don't allow that to be my only point of view in life. Not all Blacks are thugs sell drugs and hustle on the streets. Just because you were raise in the ghettos or lower class family is no excuse not to seek out education. Many Blacks use this as a handicap. A reason to blame then to over come like those of the past try to do. I feel specially young Blacks who lose confidence is willing to take the easy way out.I don't wanna become a damn statistic on a piece of paper.I don't want people out side the Black community to view being "ghetto-ish" is being Black.

I see an influence of Black culture on far eastern countries like South Korea and Japan. I feel that Asian hip hop artist only get the trend that is hip hop. Instead of going futher down into roots were hip hop has grown from. Asian cultures are rich with tradition and customs past down by generation they to have experience of prejudice in America. They to have been place under watchful eye of racism and felt the cold wind of social discrimination .While during the gold rush Chinese immigrants came to America in hope of better life they to experience the same level of hateful discrimination that is happening to Hispanics immigrants today. Those who were Japanese or Asian living in the United States were place in concentration camps during WW2 by the American government in fear of revolt in loyalty to Japan. There is prejudice from Asian towards Blacks. What I find ironic is that Asian all are people of color. In fact Asians have more facial similarities to Blacks then Whites. I feel the ugly "White is Right" exist in Asian communities all over.I hope Asian youth will end the prejudice of the past and learn about Black culture. It is nice that you except hip hop but the African community has more substance. Those who are Native to Korean and Japan that live in countries were Africans make less then 1% of the population take the time to explore more. You are online in forums of those in your community willing to connect to others who are the same. listen to Kpop and Jpop artist who are influence by Black culture music. take time learn about the civil leaders that isn't then and now.

Being Black in America seems to be a never ending struggle.Being Black and existing in this world is just as hard.Blacks are consider to be the less superior race in the gene poll yet we are every where. From plains of Africa,to hills of Europe and tropics of south America. Blacks exist in all cultures and left a memory behind. The new age world is forgetting this and is becoming more closed off. With web hosting and cell phones we have many ways to communicate and yet we still create walls to shelter are selves.I don't like being taken as stereotype when I meet somebody.I don't like feeling unhappy in my own skin. My family is Hispanic and Black have a sense of pride that I haven't still learn yet. I don't wanna look at my brown skin and feel like an alien in this world.I belong here just like every one else.My skin is beautiful my heritage is wonderful.I don't need to pick sides but stand up for my rights.I guess to me that is what it means to be Black in America living day to day. What it means to be Black in this world discovering new people and cultures different but the same as mine. I just hope people of my generation will end the prejudice that divide us and stand more united.

I was talking to my bf about this last night. I personally feel that if the black community doesn't want to be set apart from other Americans they need to quit segregating themselves. You can celebrate your differences without calling major attention to them just for the sake of. IMO things like continuing historically black colleges, race based scholarships, affirmative action plans... all of these things call out your race. How can you expect people to see you as a MAN rather than a BLACK man if you constantly call attn to the fact.

I hate that there are black "heros" that only focus on helping the black community. A real hero would at least attempt to help out any and everyone regardless of whether or not they share the same cultural/ ethnic background.

A lot of Blacks don't want to be white. They want to be Black. They are proud to be Black.

What that means is, instead of trying to be white, trying to succeed in a white man's world, and trying to not be Black, they glorify their own culture to make Whites want to be like them instead. Hip Hop is one avenue to this remarkable transformation of Black image and it's working. It's bringing envy to Black life to the point where being Black is not being viewed as wrong. Being Black is just viewed as being different and hip.

There's a reason why people like Bill Cosby has to apologize every time he opens his mouth and criticize his fellow African Americans. The Black community calls him a traitor.

Yeah, except there is some confusion in what "being black" means or "being white."

People confuse urban or southern culture with "black" culture. There's no such thing as "acting black."

Something that's sort of an awesome trend up north is that black americans have jumped on the hipster bandwagon. There's not much cultural separation in clothing style whereas before there were marked differences. It's like the 60's or 80's again where everyone dressed the same. biggrin.gif

I haven't watched the segments that were aired the other night yet. I do feel that the black community needs to change itself, it's goals and priorities as a people..because honestly it's quite sad. The values a lot of the younger generation have for themselves are appalling and it sucks that to better oneself is to be a traitor really. That type of thinking is destructive and just one of the many areas that need to be addressed and changed.

I'm glad there are Black "heroes" that fought for rights for Black Americans.Just because they remove the chains and have racial hate laws to protect us doesn't mean we are totally free.If wasn't for these civil rights leaders we wouldn't be able to speak today. We wouldn't have the opportunity to speak of are history and tell it to the world. This is something that Martin Luther King and Malcom x fought during the 50's. Blacks were being segregated because they were NOT consider human. When police and the KKK would terrorize Black communities and hang them.Beaten them down and hoes them down for being negro. I'm glad today people still fight for Black community that even though it's well know is still being misunderstood by many.
I disagree when Blacks hate on other Blacks.I do not like to see this in the community anymore.Blacks hating other Blacks cause they have more money, earn a higher education and fighting for civil rights. These people are not sell outs but examples how far a Black person can go in this nation.Black people need to open their own eyes and stop settling on damn welfare check and life of crime.
Hip Hop is a protagonist and antagonist at the same time.Yes its nice that Blacks manage to dominate the music industry and become successful and achieve to get out of the projects.Have White and Asian Americans and cultures around the world follow the trend that is "Being Black" but what are these hip hop stars and rappers doing for the community that they left behind?A large majority or rap artist come form bad hoods, from broken homes and community but only a handful care about giving back to community that inspired them to change. They were have a BMW or Bentley and live in the Hills with White people. There is an old saying "You never forget were you come from."MANY civil rights leaders today are speaking of knowing were your heritage comes from and understanding how far we came and still how far we need to go.A lot of Black youth forget or don't care to learn that type of knowledge. Its not just for Black community but all communities of color.I feel people become more fixated on the color of the speaker then really get the message. I believe in equality for ever body but Blacks, Asian, Latinos,Native Americans,Indian,Persian,Middle Eastern, need to stop being so prejudice not only to each other (within are own community)but to other color communities. We are consider to be the minorities in this country but the fact is were are the MAJORITY.Why are we still allowing to be the underdogs? Why are we attacking each other in order to impress a few whites that don't understand us?Why are we still afraid to achieve in this nation? Why does the color youth do not care?

Black people like Jermaine Dupri?
I won't bother since I won't read the rules and they won't accommodate.

interesting.

i agree that it's strange that other ethnicity groups discriminate against others. i grew up with parents who always told me only date within my own ethnicity, and if that wasn't possible, the maybe a white guy, but definitely not a black guy. i always thought it was strange. i'd like to think i just happened to marry my husband who is also asian, but not because he is asian. i feel like if that were the reason why he married me, i'd be a little sad.

i get scared the world really is moving backwards. i notice not a lot of groups mix as much as i used to remember it. although, i think when i moved to the states almost every other ethnic group was also a first generation american, so we got along just fine in that right. but as the generations progress, i hardly see any mixing. there is nothing wrong with hanging out with your own ethnicity, but to make it exclusive, especially in a country where everyone is so different, seems to be more effort than just getting along with people according to personality instead.

the pressure to be 'loyal' to your own ethnic group also kills me. as if somehow mingling with others makes you less of your 'own kind.'

i don't think obama is the best president, but i appreciate his attitude towards americans as a whole, instead of picking out groups. i mean, one could argue he does pick and choose groups based on race, but most of those arguments just seem like creative editing to me. as a politician, people pick and choose what you say to support their opinion of you instead of taking it everything you say as a whole.

everything suddenly becomes offensive.
