The movie is based on the novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde.

(From Wikipedia) The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Talking in Basil's garden, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfilment of the senses. Realising that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian cries out, expressing his desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, plunging him into debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging.

It's a good book but I'm not sure if I'll watch the movie. This isn't how I pictured the book to be. The movie poster looks like something targeted at the "Twilight" fans.

Not me.

Oh, how I love the book. It's actually my favorite. This movie looks interesting, actually. Though, that is not how I imagined Dorian. I always imagined him to be very Adonis-like. I hate to be nitpicky about it, but Dorian Gray is supposed to be one who looks like an angel. Blonde and blue eyes. Normally, I wouldn't have any qualms about this. But that was how he was described in the novel. Ben Barnes looks like a vampire, brooding and bloodthirsty. haha.

From watching the trailer, I hope they don't make it seem like he can see who he really is by looking at the reflection..

I definitely have no objections to the cinematographer, though. He did Brazil, Chocolat, and the first couple Harry Potter movies. So I trust that it will be good. I hope that all the party scenes are intensely lavish! smile.gif

There have been several movies and tv series of the book, one dates back to 1945.

I'll probably be avoiding this movie.
I like the book far too much to risk the possibility of having it brutally mutilated by an on-screen adaptation.
Plus, though the actor is definitely handsome, he's definitely not the image of Dorian Gray that I had in mind. Bronzed Adonis goes Vampire Lestat, anyone?

OMGGG I love the book (Oscar Wilde, I am your #1 fan)

which is why I'm probably not going to watch the movie
it would ruin it for me
and like dajung said, the actor is nothing like what I imagined Dorian to be

I love the book and I once saw a fantastic theatrical adaptation, but for some reason I am not sure about the movie. The trailer didn't impress me at all. But I like Colin Firth as an actor so it might be worth watching.

I'll be watching this for purely superficial reasons, Ben Barnes and Colin Firth in one movie? smile.gif

Prince Caspian was supposed to be blonde and blue-eyed too but somehow Ben got the part. lol He's not what I imagined as Dorian Gray, his eyes are so dark.. kind of scary. They don't call him Shark Eyes for nuthin. lol

Truth. I'm gonna watch it though. Out of curiosity, I guess.

I loved the book, but I can't picture Ben as Dorian Gray? I'll still watch it anyways.

^ I can't recall exactly, but wasn't Dorian supposed to be angelic looking, with golden hair and blue eyes? And fair skin, the whole deal? It's been so long, so I can't remember..

Not me.

There's an older movie about the book with Angela Lansbury. I thought Dorian was perfectly creepy (and gorgeous) but I didn't get to watch the entire thing. You might want to watch that instead, if you haven't already.

ETA:

Oh yeah, from what I remember the dude in the old Dorian Gray was much, much handsomer (in that creepy way) than Ben Barnes.
