Recently graduated...and Yes...I AM UN_EMPLOYED
I been to several interviews and all these job are unrelated to my major. I am a financial economic major and trying to get a job in a bank. But i hardly see any banks are hiring. Most of the people they want are the one who are very experienced, or someone already have a good base of clientele.
Should I do something that's totally unrelated to my major at this point?? Or should I keep waiting...

What's your story??
Your first job and your major?? Was it totally unrelated??
Did u become successful or totally wasted your time at the job that you didn't like, but just working to get $$$??

*to all those ppl whos job hunting...wish you best of luck....keep trying..!!! wink.gif you are not alone~

I had less than an year exp at the high, and now I have more years under the belt. I feel it will be hard to find a job in a finance field since there are a lot of well experienced individuals without jobs.

My best advice is to do what you feel makes you most happy. If you want a bank job, keep looking and remain flexible (location is a whole lot). If you are knowledgeable about the field and you illustrate true passion for a position, then I am sure you will get offers. Also, till then find internships (even unpaid ones) and network.

i graduated from accounting and marketing but my first job was in sales
i actually really enjoyed sales (it paid more becoz of the bonus scheme) and i really liked dealing with the clients/travelling
but now i'm in market research which i also enjoy (got the job through networking at my previous job)

sometimes its hard for grads to find jobs - but you can always start low on the food chain, get into the company u want to work for and move around different departments once u have experience and networking.
ie for you, if u want to be in banking, can always start as a teller, and do well, mention to ur supervisior your qualifications and then opportunities will arise smile.gif

good luck

Systems administrator for a software firm, my major was systems analysis and e-business for Information Technology course.

It was a stepping stone, money was ok at the time, but is peanuts now. tongue.gif

I graduated with a degree in nursing. I work as a psychiatric nurse (which is my current job as well as my first). The Lord is good.

Totally unrelated but it was definitely a fun experience! I got the job thru some connections..
Right now, I'm with a consulting company tho!

a professor in my uni told be: "you only use around 10% of what the professors teach you in college to the real world."

i guess that depends in your degree you are holding.

my degree: engineering
my first (and current job): IT consultant

totally not related.

Graduated with an accounting degree and got a job as a COBOL mainframe programmer. Probably making more money if I stuck with accounting.

Major - Finance, investment banking since summer 2008

I think you should stick with something related to your major, but continue browsing for opportunities and really work your network to try to get connected somewhere. It's a tough world right now, but I think with the right combination of skills and connections your opportunities will be exponentially greater

I graduated with a B.S. In Forensic Science and a B.A. in Chemistry and out of college I was hired by a Pharmaceutical company working in bioanalytical chemistry, so at least the general field is the same, however the discipline is far from what I wanted to use my chemistry degree for. Planning on returning to school next year for my PhD and work in the discipline I originally planned on.

i graduated last year with a psych major, and my first (and current) job is clinical assistant at a health center, doing a combination of clinical and admin work. it's not related to psych at all, but i was premed in college, so it's a decent job for a premed, except the pay is inhumane cuz it's nonprofit (my mom calls me cheap labor). i'm actually quitting soon as i'm applying to PhD programs in clinical psych (yup, decided not to go to med school, i'm an asian delinquent lol). i already landed a tutoring job starting in the fall. honestly, i don't think it really matters if your job has to do with your major, as long as you like what you do or if it's just a stepping stone or fill-in before you advance further.

hey. same as me. The only knowledge that I had an 'edge' over my colleagues was I knew what does analog, digital and IP stands for when I first started work. lol. But they only employed 1 presales and 1 sales, so not so much of an edge after all.

still finishing up my second degree but my first was related to governance let's say and I did straight up data entry for a company contracted by the government. The pay was insane, punching numbers into a computer and making what 12.50/hr? Doesn't sound like much for you bankers and programmers but for a summer job I was good.

I hear of people getting jobs that are so far away from anything they studied this world is just about connections. With connections you can do anything. I knew a guy who did multimedia for four years and was hired by a bank as a financial consultant (he knows a lot about finance but has no degree in it to prove himself), just because his girlfriend's mom is an executive at a different bank and schooled him on what the interviewer would ask.

I first worked at an environmental consulting firm when I was in my fourth year of business accounting. Now, as a fresh graduate, I work in a childrens hospital as a medical secretary for some nutcases I call physicians (seriously) in the OR =P

You could've gained some experience by finding a summerjob in banking...

What kind of jobs have you done while you studied?
