I've been reading up on HIIT (high intensity interval training), and I was just wondering, which is the better choice? A treadmill or a jump rope? The only thing I'm worrying about for the treadmill is that it takes time for the speed increases/decreases, which might disrupt the workout, right? Also, for whichever one is better, what's the best interval/speeds to do it on?

Thanks! smile.gif

PS. Will doing HIIT make my body buff? sad.gif I'm looking to slim down and get a leaner/more toned body, and I definitely don't want to have a buff body since I'm a girl.

running outside on a track or just on a field is best. non-treadmill running is better than a treadmill or jumping rope. intervals of 15:45 seconds would be a good start. the best speed? that would have to be your fastest running pace. that's why it's easier to just run outside or on a track. no you won't get buff, since you do not have the hormones to get buff.

although if you can only run on a treadmill or jump rope, i'd go with jumping rope since it uses more muscles. not to mention there's that slow-down period on the treadmill which makes it hard to time.

Don't believe that weight training will make women big and buff. I've been a trainer for over seven years. This cannot happen unless you are working with heavy weights and supplement with testosterone boosters. HIIT is a great change of pace for anyone. Mike Mentzer has also trained fitness models with this program.

As for running or jump roping, I prefer jump roping. It's convenient. Though I have been training more with kettlebells. It's a great cardio builder.

while we are on the subject...can anyone share a HIIT running workout that they used? i think i've done it before when I was on a sports team, but im unsure how long i should be sprinting/jogging or how long i should be doing the workout.

if it matters, im looking to improve my conditioning.

edit: never mind, i think i've figured out the general idea. but i would still like to hear what workouts you guys have done in terms of hiit running.

What I've done is 30 second sprints (as fast as you can) and 30 second walk or jog and repeat this for as long as you can. Ideally, I've read you want to do 15-20 minutes max. I've never been able to even come close, but I have lost weight doing HIIT for far less than 15-20.

I splice 30 seconds of my favorite songs and run according to that. I've read of people doing 1 minute sprint and 1 minute rest and honestly that's crazy to me. I definitely cant sprint at my max for 1 minute straight!

if you have a ipod, and a watch to work with, it's great. i usually do 15/30sec.
