I'm in the process of Google searching what I can do to help my parents against their noisy neighbors in the suburbs of LA. I thought I should post here so I can get direct feedback from the 20+ community.

The situation is that there is a house next to my parents that are constantly occupied by people who play loud music from 1am to 4am. My parents call the police on multiple occasions, but they never arrive. The parents also wrote them a letter, but they never replied. They have a hard time sleeping at nights as a result of the neighbors and they want to figure out a way that will make them obey their simple request.

Here's some other information about the neighbors:

- they rent the place.
- we've asked the owners to tell their occupants to quiet down, but they told my parents to call the police.
- 1am to 4am music and loud noise during weekdays.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah... i'd go raise hell at the police stations or something because that's really retarded of them to ignore phone calls like that. KEEP CALLING until they send someone imo.

I'm so used to all the damn noise in LA. The people across the street play loud music in the middle of the night like every damn weekend as well but it doesn't bother us since we've learned to tune it out. In your parents case, it's causing them to lose sleep. Maybe you can talk to the rest of the neighbors into calling the police as well?

Talk about a rock and a hard place. I feel for your parents.

I agree, it seems like the only real 'civilized' recourse you have is to call the police and hope that they will ultimately respond. And if they don't respond, keep calling - even if it doesn't produce results, at least they will have (or they should have) an obvious build-up of complaints on file that sooner or later they will have to seriously address the situation. Perhaps one way to get their attention is to be 'creative' in calling in your complaint. Instead of saying 'we have noisy neighbors, send someone to quiet them down', perhaps your parents could get away with phrasing their complaint as, "Please send someone to <address>. There's some kind of ruckus going on there at this ungodly hour and I'm fearful that there must be some kind of domestic disturbance." I don't know, it could be worth a shot as the call implies a different kind of importance to the visit the police would have to make as opposed to some 'babysitting' call on some rowdy neighbors.

Other than that, maybe your parents could coordinate with other neighbors. If the neighbors are that loud, certainly your parents aren't the only residents being affected. If everybody can get together and complain to the cops in one concerted effort, that too might get the attention of the police. If that doesn't work, then what else? Maybe get a petition together and then present it in person to the local precinct as a formal complaint?

Good luck.

I dunno if it'd be a good idea to go to them directly yourself.. what if you get into an argument with them or something? sad.gif I think it'd be better to just call the police. Atleast they won't know it was you guys that did it then. Lol.

Hahah, I think he's talking about meeting the property owners, not the renters that are the ones causing all the trouble. But you're right, confronting the renters at such an odd hour of the evening is probably not advisable.

badboy, if you do confront the owners, maybe having another annoyed neighbor (or more) to accompany you might be even more effective?

that sucks!, you should try to gather other neighbors to also complain, so the city would have to do something about it.

my neighbors have this god forsaken dog they can't take care of and they leave it out in the morning..it goes ballistic barking at everything and it ruins my sleep and my moms sleep because she works a night shift and sleeps till noon...it sucks major nuts..

I don't think you should confront the neighbors yourself. Too dangerous. Very, very bad idea.
Let the police handle this. My confusion is why would they not come when you call?

Good luck with the whole thing.

I find that weird too. That's pretty messed up of them not to come. I mean, I live in LA and just yesterday there were like 7 cop cars, 2 bike cops, and a guy that looked like a detective all on my street talking to 2 people in handcuffs. TWO. TWO PEOPLE. ALLLLLL those cops for 2 people. I was really confused.

My neighbors are like this... not recently though but they used to be horrible. I just ignored it the best I could. Once I called the cops and it took over an hour for them to come so from then on I just didn't bother. As bad as it sounds if you want the cops to come you should say that you think you're neighbors are doing drugs. Yes, I know it sounds bad but if they are inconsiderate jerks then serves them right. All you have to say is you smelled something funny. My friend has done this a couple of times to her neighbors when they throw raging out of control parties and the cops have showed up right away.

Actually, you would be amazed on how many squad cars are called for a random stop (just because the person is a person of color) in the small town that I live in. The African American Director at my campus was stopped on many occasion because of racial profiling. It's absurd, but it happens.

Anyways, like the other just going over to talk to the neighbor can be dangerous so maybe having a police officer during the time you go over will be safer. But I'm still confused on why the cops never show up when your parents has called many times. As for the property owner, they're so different from all the owners that I've met. Usually have many reports from the police and constant complaints like that you would think that people living there will be terminated. But again, you lose money for having your place vacant until you find new people to live there.

Well, the two guys were hispanic but the cops that were there were almost all mainly of color (being hispanic themselves). Sorry to hear about your director being racially profiled though. :/

you have one of 3 options. 2 are illegal and the other can get illegal.

1. impersonate a cop, bang on the door, shut the mini cooper down.
2. break in while they're gone and cut the wires to any and everything electrical.
3. have your father show up with a big ass ax and pound on the door...when they answer "suggest" they keep it down. if they refuse or if they dont answer...start hacking away at mini cooper.

At my university for the last 3 years I stayed at an off-campus location which with my school, was in a city and super noisy. In addition to the city noise which you can get used to, we had several fraternity houses as my neighbors. My place had 7 guys living in it and no matter what time of day it was, there were always guests over or people drinking and partying. It's fun at times but eventually gets annoying and old heh. I tried everything: talking to them, the landlord, other neighbors, buddies, but no matte what i tried, nothing worked short of calling the police (which i couldn't do, they were my buddies too after all). However, in your situation, if the residents who are noisy are renting the apartment/house, there should be a stipulation in all landlord/tenant contracts which states something along the lines of acting in accordance with the general environment and keep their noise to a minimum/such that nobody should have reason to complain. If speaking with their landlord doesn't work, the police can give the tenants a noise violation and a fine, which will reflect onto the now unhappy landlord. If that still doesn't work and you truely cannot stand it anymore, you do have a strong point from which to start legislation.. but which of us recent grads has the time and money to waste on that process? sad.gif
