You guys ever consider that with the money we save working for a year in the US, we could live like kings in a third world country for a couple years?

Man, some days I'm tempted.. XD

I wish I could remember the website, but it basically brokedown all the crazy cool places you could live for cheap, just saving money from a MINIMUM WAGE job in the US. So yes people, you may be ashamed you work at McDonalds, but after a year you could be living like a BOSS in another country.

Woooot yeaaa... buy a whole town in China and marry all the girls in the village!

j/k (kind of anyways)...
Thing is though, even a peasant in a first world country has access to more luxuries that a king in a 3rd world country.

Definitely will retire offshore for tax advantages and better standard off living...i.e...panama or costa rica. Might do it sooner once the company implements the virtual desktop/cloud computing.

i did the whole expatriate thing and I experienced a few things. I don't think it's worth it.

sure it feels great to be in a new country, but the novelty wears off very fast. imagine one of those vacations where after a few days you just want to go home. the worst factor is the people. natives will always look at you as a foreigner and in 3rd world countries most will try to avoid you or view you as a way for them to make money. a sense of isolation comes up and it's pretty bad.

i had good and bad experiences as an expatriate and i when i went back to the US i ended up studying the negative effects, which is known as "culture shock." very interesting cultural phenomenon that every person should take a look at if they're going to travel for an extensive period of time.

Side thought -

If you sold your car, you could probably afford to have a bunch of people carry you around on a palanquin.

With palm leaf fans.

Pure awesomeness.

I've been a millionaire in South Korea and Vietnam.. it was a great feeling. The Korean Won didn't go far but the Dong did =P

A 2 yuan breakfast in China is always fun too.

I could live like a king now back in one of my motherlands.

Having a driver, maids, cooks, etc. But I don't know, having people do my errands for me and being spoiled gets boring quickly.

I'd rather change careers and pursue modeling again.

If you have enough money, you can buy a small Island here in the Philippines, in Caliraya.
The government will sell it to you for a very cheap price.
In return, you will have to develop the place and turn it into a beautiful resort.

My cousin only had $1000 dollars when she went back here and she had the time of her life.

that is very true. we had this german colleague and we asked his salary. well he just told us his salary without question. we told him after a few years time, we can just retire and buy a beach resort anywhere here in the philippines.

very true! i was in Vietnam last month & i was amazed how incredibly cheap everything was there! for example, i was able to buy a regular sized can of coke for 20 cents! or, you can but a nice dinner for you & some friends for about $8.

what's kind of cool about there is that almost every place accepts american money [:

i have thought about it, but for me, the downside is the life i'd be leaving behind, and i don't think i'm ready to leave all my friends and my life yet!

Honestly, it felt good to live like a king in Vietnam but I felt so bad :x

People would stare at the way you dress and etc. It was just...awkward.

Becareful of Chagas in Costa Rica! :x haha. True story though, you'll die in 20 years of a heart attack if one bites you and you scratch it.

I lived like a Queen in Taiwan for 1.5 months. It was like spending monopoly money.

i lived pretty well in thailand for 3 months smile.gif

but i think the lifestyle is totally different in some places,
sometimes people spend because it's hard to let go of the american lifestyle.
at least for me it was. i think.

Totally misinterpreted the topic title. I thought this was about playing professional basketball abroad if you couldn't make it in the NBA.
