I've had my car for a few months now but I don't know how to get anywhere else other than where I need to go such as school, work, gas station, and my apartment. I feel kind of stupid since everyone else around me knows how to get to many different places without struggling but I'm just scared to go to new places and new streets. I don't have the courage to either -.- I feel like since I'm old enough.. I should be able to do this and that but I still feel like such a baby and have such disappointment in myself that I can't do much. How to fix this?

ah, i see i see. yeah my friend (of two years) sometimes get lost trying to look for my house. heck, her parents get lost around our city. how about you and your friends/relatives go on daily drives when you're hanging out? it won't be unfamiliar territory if you go there daily~

and a tip if you're gonna go somewhere new, such as an interview; go look for it the day(s) before with friends/relatives so you won't get lost (and be late!) the actual day you have to go there. ^^

Yeah, follow the advice of the person above.
...But Im still like this a bit. In order to go to major stores or restaurants we have to drive to the next city/town..sometimes next state.
Now that I have my license I drive myself now.
So thank goodness for being familiar with the streets (thats from riding with my ma and others)..plus there are so many overpasses.
Im actually a bit scared of them when I enter upon one.

Either drive around to get familliar with routes you'd take often, tail some friends who drive to get the routes nailed or get a GPS. Expensive, but would solve all your problems.
The time it takes for me to look at you is the time it takes for me to realize it's too late.

Find out exactly how to get there using a street directory or googlemaps first, follow that route, then after a few times you should be more familiar with the route.

In my opinion, don't get a GPS, unless you are really desperate or driving in rural/country areas.
I have some friends who own a GPS and I've experienced them to be quite dodgy because they tend to lead you to the wrong route. I find them annoying already and I haven't owned one myself.

So copy/print out the exact route to your destination first and keep a street directory in the car as a back-up. Repeat the process and you should be ok. Make it that you drive to a new shopping centre/friend's house every month or something.

California is a really big place, compared to where I'm from at least. When I was last out there, it seemed like we were just turning on random streets and finding where we were suppose to be. I think if you have a day off with nothing to do, you should just drive around the area a little bit. The main thing about my area is if you know the highways, you'll be fine.

My friends theory usually works, take an exit and make a right then make another right and another right. That way hopefully you can end up at the same place you started, lol. I'm a guy, I hate asking directions at gas stations and stuff but sometimes I just take a break and find a map at a local gas station. Gas stations are everywhere, you should be able to get an idea sooner or later.

Learn to read a map. I used to be the same way, but I got a delivery job and that forced me to use a map. After using a map for that long, I learned to be more used to my surroundings. It also helps that my phone has GPS so if I ever need to know where to go, I can do so. But part of being able to use GPS effectively is also being able to know what direction you are going (North, South, East or West).

When you are riding in someone's car, look at your surroundings. Make different places look familiar to you. That's how I learned my way around. If you never been somewhere, print out directions.

I'm very curious. I am always looking for shortcuts and get lost sometimes. When I am lost, I just drive till things start to look familiar to me. Getting lost every now and then helps you get to know your way around.

Don't sweat it. I'll come with time. Just pay attention to where you're driving, look at the buildings and things around you, and try to look at all the major street names. Also when you've gone to and from a familiar place for a while, try taking alternative routes. Also study a map and look at all the major freeways and streets you drive on.

well first of all. get a GPS. ok? got it? good. now, shut it off and take it in the car with you. no go out exploring and find some places you think are cool and try to remember the names. ok? done? now, turn on your GPS and find your way back home. now go back to those locations seperately or one after another, wichever you choose from yoru home. do enough of this, you start to know how to get places. whenever i go somewhere i dont know of, i just use my GPS and the next time i need to go back, i already know how to get there without the GPS. its a guy thing i guess.

IMO all you have to do is drive around and get acquainted with all the areas you go through. Look around at the building and things that will help you remember that certain place. Also try to remember important street names because it comes in handy. Don't be afraid to get lost because you just learn more when you do.

lol i have this problem sometimes. easiest way is just to look around when you're in a friend's or parent's car. eventually you'll start to gather more and more knowledge, and you'll know how to get to restaurants/stores you've never been to with just descriptions of the streets and landmarks near it.

you can also buy a gps. just explore around and if you get lost then turn it on. kinda expensive though to get a good one...

I was like that when I first got my car. Eventually, you'll be more comfortable with driving.

I'm in the same boat. I'm horrible at directions and I can only get myself to and from a few selective destinations.
I ended up investing in a GPS. ><
