I'm about 16 1/2 and I've been driving for around 3 months with my license (passed the 1st time just got it late), I know I'm a good driver but there's one HUGE problem I have. It's knowing when to turn when the road is clear. I'll do things such as hesitate when it IS clear but end up making a bad decision when to turn and almost get myself into an accident. This includes right turn's on reds etc. With my problem driving has been getting more and more stressful and scary for me, I know experience is a big thing to have but I was wondering if anyone had advice on making decisions like this while driving?

When in doubt of not knowing if you'd make it, don't do it.
Better have the jerk behind you honk than a car ramming into the sided of your car.
As to hesitating, you've just got to get more experience as to knowing when a car is far enough for your to make the turn.

My dad always tells me if I don't think I can make the turn then don't risk it. Turn when you feel absolutely safe you can do so.
When it comes down to it, you just lack experience. Eventually you'll be able to determine if you have enough time to turn or have enough speed to pass the other cars when turning. So keep practicing! smile.gif

Pretty much what I was going to say.

I had times while practicing where my mom would yell at me saying I could've made a turn when I didn't. Honestly, when you're the driver - you make the decisions. Parents are just there to yell and bicker, so mute them out. When I drive I always wait until the road is completely clear or if a car/cars is/are coming, I make sure they're a safe distance away. I've been driving for a little over a year now though, so I mean...it's no problem for me.

But definitely just keep practicing.

When you make a right turn at a light, remember to not make wide turns. Always turn into the right lane. If you don't think you can make it, then don't go. Always wait till there is no cars coming or when the light turns red for the other people. It just takes time to get comfortable being behind the wheel.

I was lucky enough to have my brother let me take his car around when I first started driving. It is his baby and he doesn't really trust other people driving it, but he wanted me to have practice so when he would have a place he needed to go like Sams, Walmart, Sonic, the mall, and so on he would tell me to come along and drive. Funny because he was the only one in the house that would let me take the car out and it was techniqually illegal because I had to have someone 21 or older and he was only 19, but eh we didn't get caught so it was all good. We did this for a couple of months and I gained a lot of confidence, and he taught me a lot of things like taking turns slow and driving at my own pace. Of course going the speed limit, what he ment by going my own pace was when driving don't get pressured by the bastards behind me urging to speed up.

Like the person above, when you drive don't hesitate, if you feel you can't do it don't. Don't let the person your driving with pressure you into doing something you feel you can't do. Remember sitting in the passenger seat and drivers seat are two totally different things.

It's pretty simple. Driving is all about making judgements. If you can't make the green/yellow light, don't do it. If you can't make the turn, don't do it. It's pretty simple.

Left turn:
Wait for incoming cars to stop, then turn.

Right turn:
If green light: just go.
If red light: wait for an opening.

So simple...

But with left turns, since I'm just learning too, I just wait for a long opening on green unless I get signalled on red. Otherwise I'll wait until yellow to go. I've got some kind of natural awareness to the road, even though I've only been driving a total of 3 hours since I'm doing driving school and my family has no car. However, my skill is lacking compared to my awareness, so for me at the moment, instinct is a bad driving habit.

lol dont worry. try sitting at a right turn with cars coming. just sit there and wait for the green. there will be many times during ur wait that you say to urself. "i could have just totally gone just now" or "hey i could go right now" get used to those moments and that feeling.

the action will come with a comfident thought.
Think about all the things in this life that hurts you... do not do those things.
