A facebook group, with a new idea...Spreading... ohmy.gif
QUOTE
Tired of messaging or texting someone a sarcastic statement and they take it the wrong way and get offended because your witty sarcastic tone cannot be translated through text? Join the new movement to end this problem!
It is called Shift6 mainly because that's the combination of keys that are pressed on a keyboard but also because it is an incredibly cool name.

*How it works:*

Take one of your witty sarcastic comments, for instance:
"Myspace is awesome!"

and add the symbol '^' by pressing the Shift and 6 key on your keyboard (obviously this is different on mobile phones) to make the following sentence:
"Myspace is awesome!^"

Sarcasm is transferred!

Just like corecting correcting* yourself in MSN with the star key (*) Shift6 could become the standard of transferring sarcastic tone in text.

Now obviously this will only work between two people who both understand the universal code, so please invite as many people to this group as possible so we can get this group off the ground.

You only have to invite everyone once, and Shift6 could last a life time. tongue.gif

Wonderful idea!^

Do you tell a joke and then laugh at it? Or maybe explain your joke afterwards? No, so why make it clear that you're being sarcastic. Destroys the point.

If you have a strong grasp of the english language (or language in general), then you can phrase it such that it's somewhat obvious whether it's sarcasm or not. Of course, that depends on the situation, but most of the time how someone follows through also shows their position on a certain issue and you begin to understand why made such a thought-provoking comment in the first place.

But..whatever floats their boat. I'll intentionally omit the carat just to screw with them lol

LOL. This is a great idea.^
It really isn't necessary, in my opinion. ._.
I'm sure people have their own way of expressing their 'sarcasm.'
I wonder how far this idea will go...

This is a smart idea.^

If you're friends with that person, you would already know when he or she is being sarcastic.

that's....really stupid...
I agree that sarcasm is sometimes hard to detect via text, but typing a ^ isn't going to help most people; they'll probably think you put it there accidentally...I just put *sarcasm*, or nothing at all, and laugh at them if they don't get it.

I thought ~ was used for sarcasm already? Well at least on LiveJournal.

For example:

What a ~wonderful idea!

or more elaborate - What a ~*~wonderful~*~ idea!

I might have mistyped and typed ^ instead of ^^ and that would be disastrous.
Imagine the amount of break-ups would occur over the internet.

"I love you ^"
"GTFO!"

I am too lazy to add that. It's pointless. Sarcasm will lose its point.

If you said it in a certain way, I am pretty sure they will understand.
Plus this whole "^" idea will take ages to be popular.

No.

If we use ^, then what would be the point of typing sarcastic remarks anymore?

I'm fine without it.
