Hi everyone,

I'm new into my job and trying to make good iimpression. But as hard as I try to be ... It seems to backfiresbon me..report that I make seems to have mistakes, even the littlest as possible..manager caught me msning today. Although be said it was okay... I feel embarrassed about it. Is this a common thing? What should I do to re-create good impression?

Spend the first couple weeks immersing yourself in the environment and getting a good understanding of how things work - what's rewarded, what's expected, etc.. the corporate culture.

Don't make any waves until you know how things are done in your industry/company.

Or, if all else fails, you could get some diamond-studded cufflinks and these.

LOL i usually MSN from the first day. And then by the end of the first week, i'm in full blown internet mode with Soompi and everything.

Chances are, by passing the interview process and getting hired, it means they see something special in you. So, you just have to keep showing that part of yourself and keep selling them what they want. Whether it was your book smarts, cleverness, education, way you handled tough questions, work experience, etc, you beat out the competition. Going on the net is just stuff people do and it's understood. At the end of the day, impress them with quality of work and then all will be forgiven.

One of the first impressions that I always work on in my repertoire is Donald Trump.
This was the best impression that I did at work and it was so good I had 4 people thinking I was their new boss and that they were fired.

what the hell? you're on msn at work? and while you just started?
what kind of work is this??

anyway, just common sense really.. take initiative to do things. don't be the last one in the office and don't be the first one out. come early and stay a little late.

even when you try your hardest sometimes things happen beyond your control and it just doesn't look 100%. I study my hardest and make a mistake on something I know but just messed up for no reason. Keep trying it's no problem.

i think you should just relax and enjoy your job rather than thinking of only impressing people and just being perfect cause you'll only let yourself down when something strikes at you. just be yourself and do your job right while doing your best.

As explained by others, monkey see monkey do.

Analyse what other employees do in your work environment, preferably your boss or your peers, not the lazy Helpdesk dude who is on eBay.

by the end of the day, it's not what you are doing, but what you've done that counts. in other words, just being busy at work isn't the ultimate solution - you have to combine that with results - the better the results, the better the feedback. (imagine someone who always seems like they are working, and at the end of the day have little done, versus someone who miraculously plays all day and yet get their things done). just a thought, not saying i'm right =)

When you care too much, even when you are a hard worker all the time there is that one moment where your boss just catches you in a bad moment, it just all seems to crumble down. Just relax and enjoy being in your work environment. Look at the person who has the most compliments and do what they do, or maybe even better. But don't be so hung up on the "make a good impression" thing, just do your best with your role in the company and that would definitely show.

Now that I got that out, where are you working? How did you go on msn?

ROFL.

I'm sure that mistakes are expected considering you're new but just try to concentrate on the work you're doing. When I first started working at my current job, I made so many mistakes I kept looking down on myself. Everytime I would do that it was like I was psyching myself out and i'd make even MORE mistakes.

When you're working, just concentrate on what you're doing. I noticed that a lot of the times I make mistakes is when my mind is wandering while i'm working so I can't even remember what I did and why I did it. Lol.

LOL that pretty much explains me at work.

Co-workers see me online all day but yet i deliver and come through when it matters most.
They have no idea how i do it but i just do it.
Sometimes, even i surprise myself... if it's not too much to say so myself... happy.gif

hey we all mess up in work for once in a while. i already had three bosses in my corporate life so far. all of them saw me YMing, fooling around the internet. two of them even saw me SLEEPING while on duty, and one of them took a picture of me while sleeping. yes they all made me feel it's alright, and yes i woiuld always feel embarassed when they catch me doing all those non work stuff. but i always make sure that i CONSTANTLY do my work correctly. well in my field (IT), there are times that it's quite difficult to be visible, but i always make sure i am visible to my boss that i am doing my job, and maybe also try to get commendations (but not force it) from customers or managers.

in my current team, the truth is, more than 50% of our time, if you pass us by our desks, you'd just see us messing around. and, with that setup, we were the team of the year last 2008. because despite us fooling around, we do our jobs very well.

so, don't be afraid whenever your boss catches you red handed. just do your job as instructed.

I think the best way to give a good impression is to be proactively productive,
which mean you will have to take initiative by yourself, and not wait for people
to lead you too much. You have to be able to stay professional, and if you want,
you can stay playful, too. The important thing is to not be a hypocrite.
Don't do minimum stuff, and play behind your boss's back.
I think it is one of the most self-destructive and counter-productive behavior.
For the company, and for you own growth.

By having more integrity, a good intention, and more desire to help and to produce results,
you will naturally make a good impression, since it will be how you really are,
not what you want to show.

The more you grow, and change, the less people will like you, but those who will still like you will love you 100x more and without a glimpse of hesitation, trust you. As ignorance wanes, and wisdom rises, very less people will have arguments with you, but you will have nice discussions with the few ones remaining. Be like water, and discover new paths. Have new neighbors, leave the old ones. Cherish what has remained unchanged, enjoy what is.

Wow thanks guys...all ur inputs really helps..I think going on msn was one of the dumbest thing yes indeed. But um..^ how then can we show that we arebeing proactive and not being led on too much? I had meeetings with the managers today and I had no idea what they are talking about ... I'm scared I don't have thatinitiative going...not only that I have to impress my manager but also to other managers in the team... And how am I suppose to do that if I'm not even working straight after these other managers in my team? What do u all think?
lotsa love.

That's very good that you want to be proactive rather than reactive. When I hold conferences and meetings with my employees I tend to get a pretty good understanding of who is just trying to my BS their wall through the meeting and who puts in the effort to learn. Now I don't go about assuming it's my employees I like to ask questions and try to get all of them to understand. That's what at the end of meetings there is usually a Q and A. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions. You're new so the manager should be a little understanding on his part.

Good luck~

Honestly, if you don't understand something I think the best thing you can do is to ask someone. Atleast it shows that you're genuinely trying to find out what's going on.

Go to work completely naked except for a big diaper. Also bring a rattle and shake it from time to time. You will succeed in making an impression this way, I promise.

MSN at work? o.o
well, for me, look at it in the way of what you want to get out of the job. Is it to learn the industry? A go-between whilst you're looking for your perfect job? To advance in your career path?
I think you need to enthuse in what you do. A few small mistkes in reports etc aren't a big deal really, but being caught on MSN even though it is "allowed" doesn't really throw off a good impression. From experience, every company i've worked for is completely differen, even if they are in the same industry, so I think taking the time to learn how the company you are working for works is very advantageous. you just need to adjust to how things are done in the company, and do it well. but enjoy it! nothing beats having a job you enjoy!
