Anyone know about this major/ is currently studying for it?

Is it better to just go into business and then fashion on my own?

Not sure what to do >_<

I was and sort of still am in the same situation your in. I am really into the whole art, graphic designing, and bits of fashion so I thinking would it be best to go to fashion or business. As the case goes I stuck with business, because just the fact that I thought I needed to know how to handle real life situations in the world of business. So I am guessing in order to help you out I am first thinking if you should research a bit about what you want to do in that field? any interests? then break it down step by step. Schools? stuff like that. Don't know if this was really a help, but I gave my personal experience as well as a bit suggestion. Thanks .

if you have your heart set on doing fashion related job, you will learn more relevant skills in fashion merchandising. if you are not sure and just want to have business skills and try out fashion, it will be harder to get into the fashion industry. but if you try out the fashion industry and don't like it, you can also have your options open.

the fashion industry does not pay as well as regular business - it is just too competitive and people are willing to work next to nothing just to get their foot in the door.

@ MOV and LeahB

Thanks for the helpful advice!

I think I'm going to go into business and decide from there what "field" of business I want to get in to.
Fashion will always be a passion so hopefully I will get to do something at least related to it >o<!
or...even open my own shop >:]

I'm a textile & business management major and we do cover both business and fashion aspect and I take pretty much all the same 100 level courses for business my freshmen and sophomore year. About your junior and senior year, most of your classes will lean towards the fashion marketing side such as branding, brand image, merchandising, etc. So if you're a freshmen or sophomore and still unsure, then going straight into business isn't a bad idea. Because once you switch to fashion merchandising, you'll probably have most of your core classes done and just need the major associated one. Best thing is look see if your school has like a degree audit where you can see all your classes, print out both and match them up. =/

My sister's taking Fashion Business and you get to learn all sides of Fashion, from retail business, to merchandising, to negotiating with buyers, to cosmetics even. I'd say look into that and see if it fits your goals biggrin.gif

@ kr0 and 7eren

Thanks for the helpful advice from both of you too happy.gif!

I guess the thing i'm most worried about when it comes to fashion merchandising is the job outlook/demand.
And it seems going into business would be safer but if fashion merchandising has many of the basic skills as business than I'm thinking it'll be ok to be a fashion merchandising major because I'll still have relevant skills?

I'm going to be a sophmore next semester and am going to be taking classes that fit both into business and fashion merchandising.
At my school fashion merchandising is not part of the business department :/
but when I researched other schools it seemed like for most schools it was part of business @_@

Im starting the semester with a Textile and Salesmenship class which is very interesting in my opinion. If you love it go for it!!!!

I'm in the same situation right now. I'm re-thinking whether or not I should major in fashion merchandising. as much as I love fashion and am very passionate about it, its just too competitive and I know its not guaranteed I'll have a good paying job in the long run. So now I'am more confused than ever :/

im a fashion designer. Majoring in fashion design is very difficult and a lot of work. They try to kill you. Its very fun but its true that you won't have a nice easy job right away or maybe never (unless you work as a designer for a mass market company) ..fashion design majors don't just have to learn a lot about art and sewing--they also are required to study history, production, business and many industry computer programs and all other things that aren't very fun x.x despite that, i still enjoy fashion design and don't regret my decision. Hope i was able to give you some useful information.
