Business seems to be heavily dominated by white males, and since soompi consists mainly of asian women.. well, it would be nice to know some fellow soompiers will go head-on into this cruel business world. :]
As for myself, I'm studying Accountancy (yuck, I know.. people have been telling me I'm more cut out for HR..) and I'm a junior attending Bentley University.
Bentley University.. hmm.. are you wondering if you've heard that somewhere?
Probably not. It's a very private business school on the outskirts of Boston. Unless you're very focused into business and have done your research, the only "BU" you've probably ever heard of is Boston University. No worries, I'd be the same. ;]
Anyways! Point is, I just wanted how many people on soompi is generally interested in business, and what area. Also, any future goals?
For me, I hope to "pass" the CPA exam.. work for one of the big four (specifically KPMG I think) and eventually switch over to a private company and take over as CFO. :3 Hey, if you put your mind to it, anything can happen. :]
SO, business people.. let's get down to business, shall we? <-- AH CORNY.. lol.

I just ... love math. :] But I hate teaching. So finance was the way to go for me.
My dream is to possibly work for a production company (like dreamworks or paramount pictures) and be part of the financial advising people.
But I suppose a more "realistic" dream would be to become part of the IRS. x] People will hate me, but in the end I get government benefits.
We'll see where the future takes me :]

LOL. I guess I can see that. Business is very flexible when it comes down to what skills are needed for each person.

Haha.. GL! I thought about international business.. but decided to not to it. After going abroad though, I'm kinda regretting it. :3
Can't you minor in one of them? :3 Or maybe, get a grad degree in the other one/

Oh yeah, that sounds like a good plan. You shouldn't have a difficulty with job searching. :]
BTW! You need to make a 411. I hate posting in my own 411 in order to response to people, and PM on soompi sucks. >.>
Oh good! A freshmen knowing that they want to do Accounting.. and I thought I was the only one, Lol! What school are you going to?
Haha, thanks a lottt.
Wow lots of options for you.. that sounds a bit intense with all those areas of concentration. But what your goal is seems to be extremely fun.. international marketing consultant.. have fun with that! I'm sure you'll do fine, especially with all those degrees and majors under your belt. x]

OH REALLYYY? Omg a freshie at Bentley YAY! And it's okay if you don't know specifically what you want to do. That's why Bentley forces general business onto freshmens first year, so they get a general feel for different parts of the business world. If you have any questions about Bentley, feel free to PM me, or find me on campus. Either way, Bentley's so small I'm pretty sure we'll know each other within the first month. :]
Omg.. That sounds AWEESOMEE!
any of you guys planning to work in Asia?
Singapore is amazing! I studied abroad there last semester and I really wish I tried to find an internship for the summer so I could've stayed longer. I've visited HK too, it was amazing as well! If you don't know Mandarin or Cantonese, and you really want to go to one of those three places for future job opportunities, then I suggest Singapore. They all speak English there, like, everywhere, haha. Plus it's a great place in general. :] As for me, I want to move to either Asia or Australia in the future.. it depends on how flexible my Accountancy degree will be, and the different standards and rules that apply for Accounting overseas. =/
Do you mean a general major, as in JUST business? Or business overall? If you're planning to take a Major in Business.. you should try specificating your degree more, maybe to something like Finance, Management, Economics, ect.
Business is a very good, and fairly safe major to go into. If you're looking for job security, Accountants are one of the highest sought after jobs, below being a nurse. But if you go into something like marketing or management, you'll also need good social skills in order to succeed in that area. It's all about what really interests you, and what major complements you and your personalities as well as your skills.

Haha, true Vivi. <3 Good luck with your science and music arts major. :3

This is what's running through my mind. Economics is common sense, we're part of an economic system and can get the basic theory of economics through experience and general knowledge of the micro and macro perspectives of it. The rich can break that theory to their advantage whenever they want, so what good is the theory in the first place? Anyone can be an accountant if you have a Bachelors degree. You could be a financial advisor without a degree. Marketing doesn't require a degree to know about spreading out a product, bringing in consumers and partnerships. Management should come with leadership, good communication, good organization, and all that jazz. You don't need to waste thousands of dollars to know that. Social skills? Do you need to waste thousands of dollars to learn how to socialize? What use is a business degree when all the theories you learn is common sense? Isn't the basic concept of business to find the most efficient way to make a profit by having the least amount of expenses and liabilities? Do I need a business degree to figure that out?

Well it's certainly true that a majority of business is common sense. There are plenty of successful business people who can go out into the world without earning a degree - they are just born with the street smart they need. Take my dad for example - he managed to open up a Chinese restaurant 20 years ago (his highest degree of education was middle school level) in a dominately white community.. without even knowing how to speak English. What he had was his observations of his part experiences as a chef in Boston (what worked and what didn't) as well as his personality which gave him the flourish of a great businessman involving deals, loans, ect, as well as great leadership.
Yes, economics can easily be labeled as common sense. That's why I also personally feel that there's no need for a major in Economics. However, I'll have to rebut your theory that "Anyone can be an accountant". You really can't. For the people that ARE, it's because they understand the concept. There are many people, who study hours upon hours of the subject and theory, and are unable to grasp it. Accountancy is a subject that either you get, or you don't, but either way, it's an important skill to have, whether you're a business major or not. After all, if you're balancing your checkbook, you're doing Accounting right there.
Finance, I would also have to side that you'd need a degree. After all, it's not JUST about advising. There are lots of forumlas and theories that rotate around the finance industry. It can also be a major that alternates between Accounting, since the subjects are fairly similar. I mean, I'm sure you could study all these formulas and theories on your own, but unless you're a genius, I'm fairly sure an instructor would be needed for Finance.
Marketing and Management, I can agree with you. Although there are a few areas in which study would be required (marketing deals heavily with psychology and customer perception), many of the areas in marketing are fairly common sense as well. Management is all about personality and the way you deal with issues. That's something you're born with. For me, I'm only minoring in management for the "degree", when I job search. Everyone always value that you're "recognized" by an institution to handle "managerial" situations. Plus, it's always good to have practice in certain areas of management. For example, my college offers this class called "Negotiations"... perhaps the ONLY management course worth taking at my college. In it, students are constantly given various situations, and put into groups into one of two sides - in the end, both groups need to come to an agreement for certain products or situations. Although this may SEEM like common sense, when people are actually put in "real life" situations such as these, they choke. Earning a degree will polish whatever skills you may already have, and you'll also be very well-rounded in many different areas.
In any case, a business degree isn't useless. However, it's also not for everyone. It really depends on the individual. I just hope that my arguement will let you consider some sort of business degree at least. Otherwise, be an entreprenuer! You definitely don't need a degree for that (even though I know many people who get a degree in that as well!)

Even if the accounting degree is useful, I know a bunch of people who gets into accounting without the accounting degree, but an accounting degree is so specific that you really can't do much away from accounting. like you said, they're probably the ones who already understand the concept of accounting. For finance, I know people who are self taught and learn from financial advisors instead of at school, and they still do well in the field. I also know that there are a lot of engineers who are CEO's of companies because of their logic and math compared to business majored men.
I am planning to do entrepreneurship, but I know I'm not going to get a degree for it. I don't understand why people waste 100 grand+ to learn how to run a business. I'm starting to think that a business degree isn't for me, because I want to own and run a business, not work for a business. I look at business degrees as a little certificate to assure employers that you understand the theories of business, but whats the point of that when I'm not going to work under someone and improve their business when I have my own business to grow? When I think about it, I think... 'in the future, I'll be hiring people with business degrees for my business.' As much as I love business and economics, I think I'll stay away from getting a degree from it, because well... it still seems useless to obtain my dreams.
I have a question though, I'm interested in mass production, mass advertisement, and targeting the mass audience in main stream, is there a major that looks over that?
