Tell me about it. I went to Malaysia twice (surprised I didn't go more since it was right there), Bali (Indonesia), Thailand (Phuket and Bangkok), Hong Kong (and Macau), and Australia (Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sydney). You can just imagine how much that hurt my wallet. :3 And plus, I nearly clubbed every week, and alcohol is mucho dinero in Singapore. >< Try to budget if you can when you go abroad. You'll need it if you're wallet has a limit, x].

OH. Wow, that's a nice diverse degree, haha. Bentley only offers business degrees, except for a new LSM program they implemented a few years back.. but I'm not really into Liberal Arts, so I didn't look into that much.

I studied abroad last semester actually. :] So sophomore year 2nd semester. I was one of the youngest people out of all the exchange students in Singapore.. most of them were juniors.

TOTALLY not done my degree.. going to be a junior this year. Two more years until I get my bachelors, and one more year after that for my masters. My college offers a five year program. :]

Ah no need to despair! A Finance major is fairly similar to that of an Accountancy degree - both are fairly decent in the job market. If you wish to further your Finance area, you could always think of taking the CFA test. However, even with just a bachelors in finance, you could do a multiple of career paths like financial consulting and corporate finance.. having a finance major allows for a fairly diverse job range. For example, a lot of people who deal with real estate have a finance degree. Investment bankers is also the same thing. You just need to do some more research about future possibilities for yourself. Just because you're majoring in Finance doesn't technically mean you're stuck in "Finance" - a lot of employers hire people with a finance degree because they have a solid financial understanding for various careers.

I appreciate that..I'm just hoping to get a career in something I like. My biggest hobbies/interests are sports, video games, music, traveling (though I've only been to Belize), and geography (I can look at maps ALL day, and I pretty much know the capital of every country). I did not major in Geography at the time because frankly I didn't think there was much chance for a decent job. I sort of regret not following my true interest because I truly think I would have loved every class I would have been in.

With Finance, I just don't want to end up in a bank somewhere..or a credit union. That's just too typical for me. There has to be other careers in Finance, and especially the Marketing aspect I can add now that can be applied to any one of my interests... I just can't envision myself giving Investment advice or the like to people as a career.

That's what I thought too. Cuz I know most advisors told me to do in during Junior year.
I actually don't even know if I'll do a 4 year or 6 year. But it seems like MBA will be better though.

Another question, did you have scholarships or anything for studying abroad in Business?
How come u didn't take any business classes when you're there?
And how did you afford so much? LOL i think I'll just be broke...<___>

^You don't get paid for overtime in the Big4, haha. So you figure, for those weeks you work 80-100 hours, while starting out, you are probably making less than 1k a week starting. So at 80 hrs a week you are making roughly 12.5/hr. Not too bad =x.

You do the job for the experience, not so much for the "awesome" pay. Big4 accounting is a bit different from your typical office job. Each level of your career is a different skill set and not everyone can do all of the skills well so not everyone will advance. Also it's not everyones cup of tea to get burned out working those kinds of hours. At least with Ibankers, they make a crapload more. Granted, Ibankers are more like busy season.....FOREVER, while accounting is busy season for like 3-4 months a year.

Well I don't think there's too many majors that would MIX the both of them together.. when you double major in something, it's normally to make you more versatile to employers. Plus, you'll have more paths open for where you want to go in the future, since one side involves creativity while the other is more analytical. Good job exercising both parts of your brain!

HAHA.. it's not too bad. Don't think too much about the academic work, and more on the amazing time you'll have in college! ;]

Well, you can always just start with a 4 year for now. You can always decide later. x] The economy may play a role in your decision too - as of now, since the job competition is so tough, employees gives people with master degrees a better chance than just a bachelors. Plus, since my college offers a 5 year program, it would be a waste to give that up.
However, if the economy gets better, you may want to just find a job with a bachelor's degree, and find a company that would be willing to pay for you to be in grad school. So yeah. :]

AHH. You know, your Study abroad department will normally offer stuff like this. I know they found one scholarship, pretty good (4-5k money, all you had to do was fill out an application and write one essay) but I was TOO lazy and never filled it out. My friend who went with me decided to do it and she GOT it. And trust me, I could have totally gotten it if I compare her essays with mine. >.>;

BUTTTTT.. it may have also been determined by financial need. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, there are plenty of scholarships. You just gotta look for them and.. not be lazy, like me. XD

Erm.. most of the business courses they offered there were junior standing.. I didn't have enough prereqs back at my college to take them. Soo.. I had to take elective courses. xD Make sure you look at the foreign college's course offerings and that you can match up a lot over there, or else academically it'll be a fit frustrating. :S

I saved a lot of money. XD I'm not too materialistic, and I always get a lot for New Years.. so yeah. Plus, my parents helped a bit. :3

Business Administration-Management here at UML (Junior). Will be doing a double concentration in Management and Marketing.

I was actually looking into going to Bentley fresh out of high school, but that was 4 years ago.

But if you go into something like marketing or management, you'll also need good social skills in order to succeed in that area. It's all about what really interests you, and what major complements you and your personalities as well as your skills.

Well said. you just described the reason i'm going into psychology and business as a minor. :-D

Hello! I'm majoring in International Business and Languages in The Netherlands! Starting college this year.

My major is basically business along with learning 3 foreign languages to help you communicate and build business relations better (and easier) in the future.

I'm an incoming sophomore at Santa Clara University's business school. smile.gif Hehe, we were one rank above you in BusinessWeek's 2009 rankings... tongue.gif

Majoring in accounting and environmental sciences; keeping my career paths open! But I'm pretty sure I'm going to be doing the two year Big 4/CPA route. I've been keeping my sights on PWC, but any of the Big 4 is fine!! I want to work with non-profits or become a tax specialist!! 8) I'm not sure when I want to take the CPA exam or go to grad school yet though... But yea, I've heard it's best to take it when your fresh out of college.

I have a family friend who worked with Deloitte and was sent abroad to work in Europe, so I'm definitely interested in doing something like that.

Other than that, I'm planning on studying business abroad in Europe my junior year. But nothing's really set in stone.

& I see you're in DSP, Raisuki. Haha, don't mean to sound stalkerish!!!; but how's that going? I'm thinking about rushing this year, but my schedule is packed as it is. sad.gif

^Prepare to be worked. PwC is known for working their employees =P.

But now a days, 2 years doesn't get you much. You need to hit manager then leave to make any use of it. Otherwise you go from making whatever amount at a big company to the same at a smaller company. No increase.

Is anyone doing the undergraduate program at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business? If so, do you mind PMing me your stats when you applied to Haas as an undergraduate? I really want to get in, and I'm applying this year. I really need to see if I'm even eligible. sad.gif Thanks a lot!

i stopped reading the thread after the first few replies, but i've heard of Bentley and visited the campus. it's a really cute school. If i remember correctly, there was a super adorable Soompier who went there too..

Anyways, I go to Northeastern University... Majoring in International Business with a concentration in Marketing. I just finished my first internship (6 months) with The Hartford (insurance). I don't think i'd want to work for an insurance company EVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE!

Oh, and of course I almost worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon.. Though i was the alternate candidate, i was offered another position (post graduation).. so if i don't get to work for a magazine firm, i'll probably work for the DIA in DC.

what an informative thread..

introducing myself, a sophomore intl business major, debating whether to stay or switch to accounting. only thing is i received a very low grade (70%) in [Principles of Accounting I]. i retook it at a community college and received an A, but i still struggled a lot. i feel like i understand everything when reading my notes and using them to solve problems, but without them, i feel lost...[naturally, the benefits of good notes can be said for any subject]. having said that, i really like accounting as a subject.

any advice? i havent taken classes specific to either major, as Principles is a requirement for all business majors. is it too early to tell, or should i steer clear?

business is still very broad. there are still difference concentrations aside from accounting such as finance, management, international business, human resources, and etc. i think you still have some time to decide. i was thinking about management, but i wanted something more secure like accounting but i only took financial accounting also. so i am gonna see how the other classes go first. goodluck!

There are people who do poorly in intro to accounting 1 and 2 and manage to get A's in the intermediate 1 and 2. It's a bit early to tell. Plus accounting is more than intro 1&2 and intermediate 1&2. Though, if you struggle with intermediate, you might want to consider another path unless you really enjoy Tax or Auditing or Cost Accounting.
