Would You Backstab Your Friends?

For example, three friends are expecting you to work with them after an excellent performance in a competition. This year, however, you'd like to work solo. Would you tell them before any preparations start or so late that your absence would completely screw the "new competitors" over?

Because even though it might not be something important, things start to add up, and the betrayal (gosh that sounds so dramatic) just keeps accumulating. Like people normally wouldn't think that promising to go hang out with one friend and then bailing the last second is a big deal, but when it starts happening all the time, it doesn't feel like it's not a big deal.
For the situation you posted, obviously I'd tell them before preparations start. Like I said before, so many times have I put a lot of effort into something, whether it is to free up some time to hang out with friends, or make posts and crop pictures for that online store we were going to start, or even just planning something and being excited about it, just to have it all go to waste because that person(s) decided to bail last minute. It's the most frustrating thing in the world, really.

Baby, we keep the faith eternally && hope til the end

I can so relate. AND it was my bestfriend who's done that to me. Now my x-best though.
I think, wait, no. I know I would never backstab a friend. It's just plain wrong. D:

If my friends did that to me I wouldn't mind. It's just wanting do a competition by yourself not like you're spreading secrets or lies about them.

I'd rather win the right way.

If I don't like the things that they do, (how they act?) I'd ignore that little flaw of them unless it's a huge deal. Then I'd talk with them.
Edit: Answer to your question, I'd tell them right away so they're aware of it. If I tell them at the last minute, I'm pretty sure that they'll make a huge deal out of it and ask me why I didn't told them earlier / get mad at me.

i don't know if my situation was what can be considered backstabbing, but it really felt like a stab. x_x
i'll have to admit that i think i may have backstabbed a friend a long time ago though. back when i was the biggest jerk in the world.
thinking about it now, i doubt i ever will backstab anybody ever again. i hope i'm not just saying that. i really don't want to do that. after i got hurt, i guess i realized how cruel it is and i swore to never do anything like it again. lol

i don't like wasting people's time.
backstabbing to me is morally incorrect.
i wouldn't ever do it.
however, if there comes a situation that can only be resolved with backstabbing....
i don't know. ahahha
hopefully no situation ever calls for something like this.
