So I basically know nothing about car insurance and I just want one question answered, or explained. Now I live in Vancouver BC and I'm not sure if my location is relevant to anything but its just an fyi. So I want to buy a second hand car but its around an hour drive away from a private owner. My question is, how does the insurance purchase thing work if I'm buying a used car? I mean do I buy the insurance before I go and check out the car and decide to buy it? Or do I have to buy the car first then purchase the insurance, but if that was the case then how am I going to transport the car back to my city without license? Ah, I'm confused. Will someone enlighten me? Thanks.

This is how it goes for some American Insurance companies, but your insurance follows you to any car you drive. You have to check with your insurance company about this. I know with my insurance, it will follow me.

you can buy insurance first before you purchase the car. just give your insurance company the details they need and it should be fine. just remember to have the policy activated specific to the car you are buying before you drive it out.

most people in your case would drive with the policy of your old car in place to the destination of where you want to buy your new car. before you drive off with your new car, call up the insurance company to get your policy updated. it should only take about 5-10 minutes. depending on what car it is you are buying, insurance premiums might change or they might not even cover you with your new car. so check with your insurance company before you make the purchase.

OK. Lucky you I'm in BC as well. Basically, you go to an insurance office when the deal is over and have the car registration transferred to your name. http://icbc.com/registration-licensing/buy...ariables._frag_. That covers what I mentioned. You WILL need someone with a licence to drive the car back for you, can't have an L driver use the car, even with temp insurance. You don't have to buy insurance right away, but if you have to drive it back, you'll need temp insurance, and that goes for around 50 bucks for one day, which you can buy before you pick up the car. Again, you WILL need someone with a valid licence to drive the car back for you.
The time it takes for me to look at you is the time it takes for me to realize it's too late.
