KBS boycotts YG Entertainment - f(x) Sulli the reason behind it?

It has been known that YG Entertainment has been boycotted by KBS 2FM. The radio station will boycott all appearances by YG singers.

This was sparked off by a sudden no-show by GDragon on Sukira on 15th September, and KBS 2FM had refused to play any YG singers’ song on the station for the whole of that day.

And it was questioned if the dispute between the YG Ent and KBS 2FM was due to GDragon mentioning f(x) Sulli in his earlier radio show appearance.


▶ Was f(x) Sulli the problem for no-show on radio show?
KBS 2FM said on 18th September, “On 15th September, with the sudden non-participation of GDragon for our radio show Sukira, we have gone against the trust given by listeners. With that we have decided to put a boycott against YG singers indefinitely.”

On the 15th itself, KBS 2FM did not aire any of the songs by YG singers.

There were originally plans for GDragon to appear on ‘Super Junior Kiss The Radio (Sukira)’ show, and the production team to Sukira said, “GDragon was originally set to appear on the show on 15th September, but they suddenly said that they will not have him on the show on the 10th. And even with the request of our team, they have broken their promise and did not let him go on the show.”

Even though Sukira’s production team has tried to persuade for GDragon to appear on the show by posting on their homepage, YG managers did not even apologise or give an explanation to GDragon’s no-show after that.

One of the producers said, “YG Ent said that when GDragon were asked the question “Which junior girlgroup singers do you think is the cutest?” and he answered f(x) Sulli on 9th September on one of the radio shows on 9th September, it became a problem and it is difficult to have him go on radio show. But in the schedule shared by GDragon and his fans, it was stated that he will be appearing on Sukira”


▶ YG speaks up
While YG spoke up about KBS 2FM’s boycott against them as being “unfair” to them.

A YG representative said on 18th September, “GDragon went on to KBS 2FM ‘Up The Volume’ for his first radio show programme,and 2NE1 also appear on Sukira – we have been on good terms with KBS radio, we are in shock and disbelief to have received such a notification from them. Even though we did receive requests for GDragon to go on Sukira, we did not 100% agree or promise that he will go on the show.”

Yang Hyun Seok also talked about this during an interview on 18th September, “We have clearly stated our stand that it is difficult to have GDragon on the radio show on 10th and 14th September. We have decided that it is not good to have GDragon talk too much about personal stuff and had decided that he will not go on radio shows.” He also stressed that GDragon has not gone on any other radio shows after the 2 radio shows he did at the beginning period of his solo debut.

He added, “To get boycotted by a broadcast company, isn’t the measures too harsh?”

But KBS 2FM had stated, “The boycott only appears on radio show, it has nothing to do with KBS TV.”

Meanwhile, GDragon will continue to appear on KBS Music Bank next week.

It has been known that YG Entertainment has been boycotted by KBS 2FM. The radio station will boycott all appearances by YG singers.

He added, “To get boycotted by a broadcast company, isn’t the measures too harsh?”

Well, I am not surprised.

If you are a sensitive person, please do not bother highlighting to read and then replying to me angrily. Just ignore, I just want to state my opinion.

That radio show is run by SM officials. SM has been known to- eliminate people.

Why do you think are YG artists not appearing in MBC's MUSIC CORE?

MBC Music Core, in the past years, have had GD and the BigBang boys as MCs in two or 3 occasions, not to mention TOP MCing with WG's Sohee and Sunye and Daesung and Seungri with Solbi. However, when they changed the PD for the show, Solbi, Seungri and Daesung were cut from being MCs abruptly and replaced by SM artists. From then on, no YG artist has appeared on the show.

I know Sukira is a KBS program, and that KBS as a whole is in good terms with YG, hence the continuing of GD's appearance on MUSIC BANK, but the mere fact that it was on that particular show and that particular station... not surprising. It has been done before. SM has done it before.

Also, YG is not at fault here. They have stated that they did not agree. That they think going on radio shows will reveal too much. And Sukira assuming things is not YG's fault but SM's. Anybody with a logical thinking will be able to understand.

That radio show will make no difference. It's just one radio station. It's their loss if they will boycott YG artists. Especially now that YG artists will be releasing a lot of solo works plus 2NE1's album. Great job, SM. You really are a great businessman

i'm not affected by YG vs SM things
but reading the two statements... 2FM tried much to have GD on the show, so maybe at first they misunderstood YG about having GD on their show and they are so childish to use Sulli as an excuse

About the boycott,I think KBS radio were trying to force GD to come on even though YG didn't agree
and was just considering. And his points on MB were a lot less then last week,I don't think they're being fair.

It's different when he's by himself.
If the the whole group (Big Bang) went on the radio shows, at least each person has limited time to speak.
But since GD will be by himself, that means more questions and more details of stuff. And who knows what things they'll end up discussing, and who knows what will come out of GD's mouth? lol
Especially when it comes to GD ~ you know how people love to breakdown every little thing about him and find anything to criticize or bash.
So I can kind of understand why YG wants to limit radio interviews.

this boycott situation..
so, based on the varying responses, either:

1. miscommunication and misunderstanding.
Sukira invited GD on their show. YG didnt reject the invitation, saying they'll consider GD's schedule.
and perhaps YG reps werent as clear as they couldve been with their initial response, and Sukira misunderstood and posted the info on their website early on, so as to get everyone hyped up/ready for it.
YG told them later on that the chances of GD being a guest were low, but Sukira held on in the hopes that YG would change their minds. in the end, YG didnt, and Sukira (kbs 2fm) got offended....resulting in such over-the-top actions.


or, the more scandalous theories (skip if you're easily offended or if you dont like dealing with conspiracy theories):

2. the radio show didnt misunderstand i.e. they were aware that YG was only considering to let GD on,
but they put his name up on the website anyway because they wanted to generate hype,
and more importantly, because it would make it harder for YG to back out of the radio show after making it public on their radio website, even if YG was still considering/thinking things over. (this backfired..the radio show staff expected YG to give in to the pressure, but YG didnt)

or

3. the radio show didnt misunderstand, and the info on the website was kept there on purpose, so as to make this whole issue/scandal possible, and to create an excuse to ban YG. (this didnt backfire..the radio show expected YG not to give in to the pressure)
the whole sukira-SM connection. and SM's influential power and control over the nation's entertainment industry.


personally, i'd go with 1 - miscommunication and misunderstanding.
although 2 and 3 are not entirely impossible theories.
and yes i had too much time to kill, and got carried away =P


anyway, i totally loved the fact that GD told us he was nervous performing in front of so many girl groups,
and told us that he thought sulli was cute.
it was because GD was being honest that i found out new interesting tidbits abt him.

i hate how the kpop industry (and other asian industries) feels the need to restrict artists from revealing their feelings about certain things/people, even when their feelings are positive. i'd want to know if a certain idol group member was dating/was interested in another member. these things are entertaining. honesty is entertaining. why censor things that ppl are curious abt?
yes scandals are often created. but if kpop idol culture didnt start out like this, being honest and open would never hv been a big deal. companies/artists try so hard to cover things up and keep certain things unknown, so it's only natural that when things do get revealed or found out, netizens are all over it. i wish they'd learn from british pop - interviews with the pop groups there are always funny and juicy.

Big Bang G-Dragon has been labeled as a ‘herbivorous guy’.

G-Dragon did a test on how much of a ‘herbivorous guy’ he is on the show SBS Kim JungEun’s Chocolated aired on 19th September.

It has been known that G-Dragon has become the new representative of ‘herbivorous guy’ in the entertainment zone with his unique fashion sense.

G-Dragon was asked to answer a series of questions with ‘O’ or ‘X’ answer - “I have a lot of girl friends but there is no case of development into lovers”, “I can hold a computer dinner with alcohol’ etc. And most of his answers were ‘O’ and MC Kim JungEun has labeled him as a ‘perfect herbivorous guy’.

During this episode, G-Dragon also performed his solo songs like ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘This Love’.

Meanwhile, G-Dragon continues with the ‘G-Dragon tsunami’ phenomenon, the song ‘Heartbreaker’ is doing well up on music charts and music shows rankings.

*PS: ‘Herbivorous Guy’, according to Korean Wiki, is to describe someone who does not appeal very strongly as an opposite gender to female, but is known to be active in his interests and hobbies, and rather passive when it comes to females or lovers.

i think the KBS thing was stupid on both sides and i hope that someone will grow up and fix it. the situation can be a good and bad thing, a good thing because he can rest but its a bad thing it will hurt his promotions and with Breath being the next song , the song might get ban for sbs. its bad that YG only do most promotions on Music Bank and Inkigayo and with the KBS ban that means that hes only going to be promoting on Inkigayo.

KBS knows that GD is too important to NOT perform on MuBank. think of the ratings! i think they are really petty to ban YG songs on their radio over such a miscommunication though. i dun really care if GD's songs are not played over KBS radio. GD will not be affected much in anyway since his album has already been out for some time now and he's too popular to be affected by a mere radio station haha.

I believe it's a misunderstanding between the two companies but boycotting YG artists' music is kind of over-reacting.
So .. GD won't be appearing on any other radio shows? Or am I misunderstanding?
KBS isn't going to ban him from Music Bank right? Although, if he performs Breathe, they will. -__- Cause KBS is a troublemaker when it comes to that, hahah.

I like it a lot better when GD goes live (like today) vs. pre-recorded b/c you can hear the tiny, but cute voice crack during the 'heart heart heart breaker' part...and you can hear the fans' chant a lot louder and clearer.

About this whole FM radio show thingy...it's prolly a miscommunication b/w the radio show and YG representatives.

It will be so horrible and ridiculous if the actual reason is b/c SM tries to shut down or decrease YG's artists' popularity seeing how YG artists are gaining a lot of attention, fans, and popularity starting with BB, then 2NE1, then GD's solo, then the upcoming girl group. Historically, SM seems to always have a tight hold on the kpop scene, but recently YG and JYP are producing really popular and attention-grabbing groups and individuals, dimming the limelight somewhat on SM's artists.

I can also understand why YG hesitates to allow GD on radio shows. GD is really popular and influential in korea right now, so whatever he does, says, wears, etc. is reported and disscussed over (even a simple hat he wore was #1 on search engine). So when GD mentioned that he finds Sulli attractive, all of a sudden everyone knows about Sulli (even I, who do not follow other groups besides BB, looked up Sulli to see what she looks like). Supposedly, f(x) is marketed in the same genre as 2NE1, so GD is basically promoting SM's group rather than YG's group.
On the other hand, I don't blame GD b/c he's just being honest and this is what I find interesting about GD and BB - they're always keeping it real instead of sugar-coating stuffs and trying to promote their own company's artists.

It's a no-win situation - YG can't promote his artists on that radio show and that radio show can't invite YG artists to perform to boost ratings. And stuck in the middle is GD who, ultimately, is the person who will suffers the most b/c the tug-of-war is not his fault and he can't promote his album.

BTW, got my blood pressure up b/c I just read in other forums people accusing GD of being unprofessional for the no-show which was not even his fault!
