My mom was driving with me in the passenger seat and we were searching for a building in LA so we were both quite distracted. The light turned red so my mom braked hard. Excuse my lack of proper road terms (I don't drive, sorry) but you know how there's 2 lines indicating the area where pedestrians cross the street? Well, our car stopped a third or maybe even half way in. We didn't enter the intersection or even cross the last line but the red light camera flashed. It flashed right when my mom braked as well as a good two seconds after our car stopped. Will we get a ticket? I hear it's nearly $500 in California. =(

EDIT:

It's been almost 2 months and NO TICKET! biggrin.gif

California is broke, so there is a really good chance of getting a ticket in the mail. Crossing the white crosswalk lines is illegal when the light is red. If you do get a ticket in the mail don't pay for it, go to court and fight it.

yeah i doubt it as well

i remember reading that the camera takes like 3 shots as the light turns red to prove that you are in motion, so you should be still in all the frames...but don't count me on this because i have no sources to back up whatever i just typed

there's a video camera there as well to settle disputes because some photo cameras are super sensitive and go off even though cars make a perfectly legal right turn. They will look at the video and determine whether or not to give you a ticket. The photo's just to take a pic of your license plate and face so u can't dispute that it was somebody else.

I'd say there is a good chance of receiving a ticket.

Shoulda took out your phone and snapped a picture of that street corner and the red light at that moment as proof that you stopped. However, I don't think it's legal to cross the white lines considering if there WAS a person crossing quickly, you could have potentially hit them. But I would fight if it clearly states that you ran a red light when in fact you didn't. And as for right turns and cameras, you need to make a full complete stop after the light has turned red before you can turn because, I've seen that camera flash when someone didn't stop and turned at a red light.
sadly, some people will never change no matter what you do.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I too have a question concerning the "red light cameras" and did not want to create a whole new thread.

I am new to Southern California, and recently changed my driver license to a California one. But it surprised me how there are so many red light cameras in this region, almost on every other intersection. In comparison to my old hometown, this is new to me.

So today, I made a left turn...which I am confused whether or not it will be a violation according to the camera. When I was approaching the intersection, I drove into the left lane (to turn left) - there was a green arrow. While in 1/3 way into the intersection, it turned yellow and as I was about to cross over to the other street - the light turned red. I was wondering if this is a violation, and will I possibly get a ticket? I have asked several relatives and friends, and it was double-sided. Those who say I should not, said since those camera only flash when it sense that someone has crossed over the crosswalk AFTER the red light has been on displayed. And that it is the rule that I complete my turn as soon as possible to avoid blocking traffic. Whereas those who said opposite, emphasized that I might have got it because the camera can still take a picture of me or the license plate because I was in the middle of traffic on a red light.

Can anyone give me a clearer answer? You see - I am slightly worried because it is nearly 400 bucks in California and it is not my car...so I do not want points deducted from that particular owner. Thanks!

Oh, by the way to the OP. I think that you will receive a ticket - or you should have by now since it has been a while. Because I heard that that the line of the crosswalk and a car-length behind the crosswalk has a sensor. Once you cross it on a red light - it automatically flashed and take a picture/video. But in your case, I really think you can fight it because you did not drive over the intersection. smile.gif

Ida: you might be clear on that one, I think that if you're that far over it might be fine. Did you see any flash? It's pretty obvious when it flashes. That happened to me once and I never had the camera flash nor received a ticket.

I don't remember seeing a flash. Are you suppose to look at the camera to see a flash or you can see it from inside your car looking straight ahead looking to your right noticing the yellow-turned-red arrow? I am not so sure...

well those cameras arent actually taking pictures to flag you down with a ticket, its a survey camera to see what brand and model make car run reds, its just statistic stuff, how do i know?, my friend works for the east division long beach police department, and he said its not setup by cops its setup by cal trans, i dont know if they do this in other states but they do it in california.

You should be able to see a flash because those camera flashes SO bright. I'm guessing you already made your turn half way when it turned yellow, correct? As long as you did not cross the line when the light is yellow, you're fine. On the ground where the lines are, they have sensors. When the light turns yellow and you "cross the line" (touching the sensors basically) the cameras will go off and flash. If you already passed the line and it turned yellow, I think you should be fine?

I am not so sure now...the more I think about it the more blurry it gets. Oh well, I guess there is no point of overanalzying it and driving myself to anxiety-attacks. I will wait on it, if there is anything...I would definitely update this thread. *cross fingers* Hope that it is nothing. Thanks everybody!
