Neither of these majors REQUIRE amazing drawing skills, but those skills will help you realize your vision easier. In my graphics class, my teacher always made us do 24-36 sketches for different ideas, but in the end what really mattered was on the screen. But when graphic designing, it's not just drawing, you need to have a strong concept, amazing color schemes and an individual style, so taking some art classes will really help you work on those skills. I know many people who can't draw manually but if you give them a mouse it's like they're gods. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

For fashion design, you may need to take some art classes to utilize colors and stuff since I think in the fashion industry you rely on drawings a lot too. You may have to invest in a pair of prisma markers too, and those are quite costly. Yet again, what matters in the end is on clothing on the mannequin. If you can pull it off, even with a sloppy/crappy drawing then that's all that matters.

Graphic design probably means you have a higher chance of getting a job. I mean, you can advertise things and all. You need to know how to work with programs such as photoshop. Obviously. Have creative ideas and etc.

Fashion design requires more than just art skills. You really need to know how to make clothes [measure, cut, sew, drape and more]. I don't know about your college, but at FIT, its required that you already know how to make clothes when you apply for fashion design. If you choose Fashion design, try to go to a school that's well know for it, because you'll get more opportunities.

I was just like you!, "Fashion Design vs Graphic Design"
OMG what one do I WANT?!?!?

Well, after doing tons of research, I asked myself this question...
"Do I want to sit at the computer all day and design stuff?"
Or
"Do I want to go and cut fabric and design stuff?"
My answer: BOTH!

but that is beyond the point.

I picked Graphic Design! (for now), reasoning being:
Graphic Design is everywhere, from TV ADS, to Clothing,Signs,CD covers, book covers and so on, everywhere you look there is a "Person in Graphic Design" designing it. =]
I almost have my B.A in Graphic Design, and I am enjoying it a lot.

But since I am still young, I'm going to fashion school in Japan for my Degree in Fashion Design once I graudate with my B.A in Graphic Design. =]

What I am trying to say is, at 1st do what you love to do, then if you don't like it. You can always change your degree.

(BTW, you don't have to be a good at drawing, to do Graphic Design or Fashion Design. Just sketching. Which is easy, in Graphic Design you "DRAW lots of lines and circles" lol.

are you by chance going to FIT? xD

none of these require amazing drawing skills. they're design majors so what is important is your eye (like how you see things) these majors most likely have the basic classes for you to take and teaches you how to (if u need to) draw or about color.
I learned in my design class that all u need to know how to draw are circles/triangles/squares

As a person who was originally going to go into Graphic Design, no you don't need drawing skills to become a Graphic Designer.
Heck, I know plenty of people who are amazing designers but average when it comes to sketching.

Fashion Design, on the other hand, you may need to be able to know the anatomy of humans, but as long as you can visualize what you want, you don't have to be an amazing artist.

Even though it might not be a requirement to be able to draw, for me, I think it helped to be able to draw, considering that if you have great attention to detail in drawing, it kinda shows that you are better able to understand what other people want and is also another addition to your skills as an artist.
Also, for most art schools, they do require certain sketching/painting classes for first few years, so you should try to make some kind of effort to draw better than stick figures at least lol.

With both majors, you ALWAYS need to keep up-to-date with the latest programs (Graphic Design) or the latest styles (Fashion Design), unless you are going about trying to make something totally original, which is difficult, might I add.

With Graphic Design, it helps to have knowledge of most of the Adobe programs, Flash, Dreamweaver, etc.
(But one thing I have to add is that it can be costly to pay for them: Most are about or over $300)

But in my opinion, as some other people might have said, Graphic Design is a pretty broad field. Anything can be considered Graphic Design: layouts, posters, effects in movies, 3D, banners, the design on products, logos, etc.
So, Graphic Design might be better in terms of finding a job.
But if you can make it big, Fashion Design also pays well.

And right now in Graphic Design, 3D animation is booming so you should definitely try learning it.

Some people are saying you don't need drawing skills to become a graphic designer, but it really depends on your school. At my university, your ability to draw and take nice photos (black and white FILM - not digital), can actually determine whether or not you even get accepted to be a graphic design major. It pretty much goes 2 years of pre-graphic design, apply for graphic design major, then either get accepted, rejected or waitlisted. You also need to be creative as heck. Nothing should look commercial or generic. Btw, only about 20% or less students at my school actually make it into the major after applying.

I'm not sure about fashion design, since it's not offered at my university, but I'm pretty sure you would have to know more "history." Like how fashion has evolved, future trends according to past patterns, and stuff like that.. And you'd most likely have to understand colors, patterns, textures, and anything that is more physical in design.

wow other FIT people in here XD

I'm in my last year of Fashion design so i can tell you a lil bit about it-- at least for my school you have to show some art and some sewing to get in --you don't have to be phenomenal because they are going to teach you but you are competing with everyone else who is applying so you have to show them that you have something everyone else doesn't. As long as your skills are mediocre but your design concept is awesome you can make it.

Once you get in to fashion design, and even in the industry you won't really be drawing very much at all ;.; there are computer programs that you'll be using to create technical images of the clothing x.x .. you'll have to do a lot of that in school too. but at least in my college, there are a lot of art classes you'll have to take and you'll definitely improve--
