so he wants to know what he can take from the car since it's totalled.
the only thing i can think of him taking is the spare tire kit (spare wheel, jack, wrench)
can he take the rims and put some steeles on the car?
what are some other things he can take from the car?

What type of car is it?
He can always part it out and sell it...

If the car is totaled and paid off by the insurance, then your friend don't own it anymore and its illegal to take any parts off.
Normally I would just remove the wheels, tires, seats, spare kit, tail lights, head lights, engines, transmissions, anything that can sell for money and people wont mind that its dirty. Steering wheels = no cuz its gross, same thing with dashboards or most interior bits, unless they are brand new.

what tires? I have summer tires on, but they also perform as good rain tires. My awd certainly helps but the wet grip on these tires are really good (Bridgestone RE-01R)

its an '08 civic.. if he put some steel wheels on the car and took his rims off.. would his insurance do/say something about it?
he's not a very car savy guy so I doubt he'd want to part it. He wants to keep the [H] emblem for keepsake since it was his first car.

yeaa but wouldn't he have to buy the car from the insurance company to part it out?
he says the only thing damaged is the passenger side and the roof.. which had to be cut to get the other two passengers out.
parting out the car completely seems to be out of the question..

Sumitomo HTRZ II, the ones with the really funky tread lol. They don't work well in the rain, as soon as its damp I can feel some wiggle during lane changes at hwy speeds, and when its flooded... forgitttaboutit lol

he said he was doing 55 when he hydroplaned and spun. he wasn't racing.
so... update. his car is totaled.. he went and picked up his things..but apparently the people at the place where his car was were really strict. they wouldn't let him take any part of the car. as in no spare tire etc. only his personal belongings.
as for those who mentioned taking the whole car apart and selling stuff.. would never happen. my friends not car savy at all.. he thought the amount of power a car has was dependent on the speedo. -.-
thanks for the help.
