Hey guys & girls of soompi. So I just moved in today to my apartment which is about 40 min away from home. My fam went out to eat dinner with me and then I went back to my apt by myself. When I walked in, I saw that all my roommates but one had left. The one who hadn't left yet invited her boyfriend over .. who lives right next door. She didn't even ask me or anything. I asked what happened to the others and she said one went home and the other went out with 2 guys .. Then I went to the restroom and just started crying because I missed my parents so much .. I called my dad and he came to take me home. So my question is, how do you cope with feeling homesick? I'm a freshman in College and this is my first time moving out .. and it just sucks so far. sad.gif School starts in 2 days too ..

Hii.
It's going to be my first time dorming too. (I transferred from a commuter school) I'm just like you, with the whole homesick problem. I talked it out with my parents and they agreed on webcam-ing every once in a while so it's not as bad. Maybe you can try that too. biggrin.gif And you said that you're currently living about 40 mins from your home, so you could also make arrangements and try to go home for the weekend every 2-3 weeks?

After awhile, your schedule gets busier, you make friends and you just don't think about home as often anymore.

Hey, I know being homesick is tough, but yeah it is something to get over for the college experience. What may help would be to find what about home makes you homesick. For me, I'm always a bit homesick for the first couple of weeks of every year, but by finding out what makes me homesick makes getting over it easier. For one, I really miss the food my mom makes, none of the korean restaurants here are really up to par, but still finding places like these made me feel better about it. Things like that you'll get over eventually, and like the other poster above has said, you can go home since you live pretty close. For the first half of my freshman year of college I'd make a trip to my sister's place who lived about an hour away every weekend to spend time with her. Since you also have that luxury, maybe that'll make you feel better? Personally speaking, you'll either come to hate or love your roommates so pay them no mind, but the best thing about being away from home, is that it lets you find out more about yourself. You think you know what you like till you really have the freedom to try anything and make your own mistakes. College will be enjoyable when you accept that, I've found lots of new hobbies that I would of never tried before. Hopefully that helped you some. smile.gif

I study overseas and can only fly back once or twice a year.
Make new friends, find something u like to do... study hard! lol. just find stuff to pass the time, and before you know it, you're on your way home!

Also helps to be close to your room-mates because you'll see them in the evenings and such. I get along really well with my room mate and we spend our evenings cooking dinner and watching dramas, or studying together.

Look on the bright side, being away from your family makes u realize how much you really really love them, and you'll cherish the time spend with them even more. smile.gif

I moved from Socal to Norcal (6-7 hr drive w/o traffic) and well, I seriously broke down into tears and couldn't stop the day my family and I parted.and well what pulled me through was actually watching a really funny video.. just for that moment and from tha tpoint on my roommates had a big role in helping out. like they were really understanding and were really kind. and we pretty much had a lot of fun getting up in the morning. the energy in the room helped me get through. i still get sad whenever i think about my family but as i keep sleeping on it, like i slowly got over it and accepted the fact that i won't see them until thanksgiving haha.
so good luck<3 i hope your roommates are a help... and i mean if that doesnt work just find something ot do to get your mind off of the sadness
but hey 40 min isn't too bad. but regardless good luck! ihpe you have a great time smile.gif

haha yea theres no magical pill that you can take to get rid of homesickness but you just gotta get over it smile.gif
keeping yourself occupied with schoolwork & friends helps a lot. Its your first couple days so of course its gonna be hard, but as the semester goes on join organizations and what not to meet people and make friends. you'll get used to it.
My freshman year of college i was constantly webcaming with my sister and brothers who go to college on the other side of the country. I only get to see them like once a year so 40 min isnt that bad. haha Good luck! call your family smile.gif

I had trouble with homesickness my first year in college. For those of you living in the dorms you'll have an easier time with it if you socialize with those around you and like others said once classes start you'll have more stuff on your mind. Another thing my parents did was buy a webcam, I have one built into my laptop wink.gif, and we send videos and talked to each other every so often.

I live 40 minutes away from my parents too. I make the trip back home every weekend and have never really felt homesick before. Like someone else had mentioned, once you start getting busy (studying, hanging out with friends, etc), it gets a lot better, and you'll enjoy your time away from family. But I always set time off during the weekend to go home to see my parents, brother, and cat smile.gif

I actually felt that way about a week ago. I cried on the phone to my mom because I felt so lonely. I had no friends from high school that went to my college, which was three hours away. I was sooo lonely, but eventually I met a few new friends that are fun to be with. Now I'm happy that I'm here.

All you have to do is go out and enjoy some clubs. You'll eventually meet new people who will become your friend.
My roommate and I hardly even talk. lol

i totally understand ur feelings, cause I'm an international student and my home is like 17 hrs away by airplane >.<. Its tough for me, since I'm also a freshman. I'm just so new here, and this is my first time living alone. I lack experiences, and everytime I ruined something or had no idea what to be done, I missed my family so bad. I was just so used to my mom's care and having my dad's advice and my bro's presence. After everytime I'm done chatting with my parents, I coudn't help but feel so down and hopeless. I couldn't sleep at night, had no good food to eat, all kind of trouble. This is my 4th day in this new place, I start to feel better, but still, I get lonely and homesick sometimes. I guess I just have to learn to accept it XD

Thanks everyone for your suggestions .. I can't believe how big of a baby I am haha, especially with some of you international students; 40 minutes is nothing!

You guys were right. Time really helped alotttt and it's quite funny since now I don't even want to come home on the weekends =x I hope everyone gets over their homesickness one way or another! & yes, joining clubs & making new friends DEFINITELY takes your mind off homesickness.

At least it's only 40 minutes for you...But I do understand!
Mine is 2 hours, but I don't think it's that bad either.
I was kinda homesick like the first day, but I felt better afterwards...maybe it's cuz I'm pretty used to being independent.
You just have to think about your future and make friends by joining clubs.
Don't be scare to introduce yourself to whoever you're sitting in class with that's all!
