So yesterday I went to karaoke when I thought about this question.
Microphones pick up sound, while speakers amplify that sound.
But what if you were to scream into the microphone and then hold the microphone to the speakers?
Wouldn't the speakers amplify the scream, and then the mic will pick up this new louder scream and feed it to the speakers which will amplify this new scream which will make the mic pick up this new scream...?
Would the machine explode?
LOL

I asked my friend and she told me that when something like that happens, there will be the screechy noise (feedback)
but I don't really get it.

anyone care to enlighten me? biggrin.gif

Here it is: Audio feedback -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_feedback

Definition:
Audio feedback is a special kind of feedback which occurs when a sound loop exists between an audio input (for example, a microphone or guitar pickup) and an audio output (for example, a loudspeaker). In this example, a signal received by the microphone is amplified and passed out of the loudspeaker. The sound from the loudspeaker can then be received by the microphone again, amplified further, and then passed out through the loudspeaker again. This is a good example of positive feedback. The frequency of the resulting sound is determined by resonant frequencies in the microphone, amplifier, and loudspeaker, the acoustics of the room, the directional pick-up and emission patterns of the microphone and loudspeaker, and the distance between them.

meaning the output is determined by the frequencies of the microphone, amplifier and the loudspeaker-> which definitely has a value, and cannot reach infinity, as you have first suggested in your post.

yea i have thought of this too before smile.gif
