I didn't know where this would go; but Mod's please place this in the right section!

--

ANYWAYS, I'm going back to school as a Junior in about 2 weeks, and recently I just added AP Chem to my schedule. So now I'm taking AP Chem AND AP Bio (these are the only two AP's I'm taking this year, plus one honors class; the rest are all regular). And I've been called crazy and lunatic ever since ;___; so can anybody tell me if this was the right decision? I can drop the class, but then I don't want to since I want to get all my sciences done before college. Should I call up a tutor? huh.gif

Just take those two, measure first the difficulty of taking both subjects but if you think your in a tight spot then call for backup, AP is what? applied?

well...AP is Advanced Placement...so it's technically like honors times a-lot-harder lol.

And I can't drop out of AP once school starts...so I have to know before Sept. 8th! T___T

get both, but don't get a tutor yet. try it first by yourself. don't mind others, mind yourself first and after this you can fire away in college! lol

this is my opinion though. just choose what you really want at least you wont regret whatever the outcome might be. goodluck on sept. 8

Try asking people in the college >>> pre-college section, there's a AP forum.

I don't think you should be taking two AP sciences in one year. It's too difficult and time-consuming. You should drop one and take up volunteer hours, sports, or something. You still have another year of high school and you can take one of the AP sciences in that year. At my high school, they don't allow you to take two science courses, whether AP or not. Because of that, I think there's a legitimate reason. But it might also be because my school is one of those "excellent" schools and the curriculum is tougher. Ask your counselor (through e-mail?); she/he should be able to help you.

PS. I'm going to take AP Chem and it's said to be the hardest AP (at my school) because of all the time-consuming tasks, difficult tests, after school labs, and etc. Don't forget! YOU ALSO HAVE AP TESTING!

AP Chem is the hardest for the high school I went to. Also, most colleges only give you credit for the class if you get a 4 or 5 so if you get anything lower you will have to take them again in college which IMO means it is a waste of time if you are going to get a low grade and not get the credits. Junior year is when the grades count the most right? If you believe that you can get high grades with both AP classes then go for it.

Well, I've been doing two orchestras + Academic Decathlon since Freshman Year, and I'm already done with my school's req. community service...but yeah...I kinda gave up on sports (I did waterpolo but had to quit) because I have no time! But yeah tongue.gif I just found out my other friend is also taking double sci. AP's..but she's super smart unlike me -.-"

I've been having 8-9 periods per day ever since Freshman Year ;__; I kinda want 4-5 periods by my senior year and RELAX lol. hence why I'm doing the double AP's.

I'm taking Physics next summer so I'll be finished with sciences by my senior year.

I have taken AP Language, AP US History, AP Chem, and AP Biology all in my junior year.

AP Chem and AP Bio aren't that bad (but I enjoyed Bio more). However, I'm not gonna say these courses weren't rigorous. You really have to be discipline and apply yourself to study.

If you really feel that you can make the grade and excel in these classes then go for it.

Edit: And you're not lunatic, I have friends who have taken all of AP core classes and also AP electives like Spanish, Statistics, Art, etc. Trust me, there are others who are certifiably insane.

AP Biology is not very hard - it's kind of time consuming because it is biology and biology is complete memorization
If you only want the good grades and don't care to remember then it won't be that bad.

AP Chemistry (at my school) is also not that hard. It's just a bit of elaboration on Chemistry I. the only difference is labs become a lot more important as it is a lab science class.

In my junior year I took AP Calculus BC, AP Economic, AP Computer Science, AP Biology, AP Statistics, and AP English all together.
Sure, it's 7 APs, but it was not as hard as I thought it would be

so my ending advice is go for it~ It really shouldn't be as bad as you think it is
and if you've been taking 8-9 periods all the time, you should be used to a rather rigorous schedule

also, senior year is not that relaxing -______- yeah i sound like im crushing dreams or w/e but it's true
if you keep that in mind, then really, you could just drop 1 and take it next year :]

hope i helped ><

I'm taking the two classes right now too plus another AP and three honors courses.
People called me crazy for taking it too, because apparently both are incredibly hard at my school.
So far though, I think it's alright. It is a bit stressing, and I'll probably hate myself later for having to study so much, etc, but in the end it's worth it. (:

lol haha that's not that bad. i know kids who decked out their year.

my friend is taking
AP statistics
AP biology
AP calculus BC
AP english
AP psychology
AP government & AP economics.

you can do it. two AP classes isn't that bad. i don't have as much as my friend, but i'm taking AP calculus BC, AP psychology, AP government/economics, and AP european history. so far only calculus is giving me trouble because i'm not really that great at math. if you just pay attention in class, do your homework, and study an hour for every test, then getting a 4 on all your AP tests shouldn't be much of a problem.

looking at the rest of your schedule, i think you'd be able to handle the 2 science APs. if you still aren't sure yet, ask the teachers for their respective curricula so you can take a look at what they try to cram into a year. i know at my school, it'd be absolutely insane to take both AP Bio and AP Chem, because i remember our chemistry course had included a chapter on organic chem already :\

Really? TT_TT
Well..I don't know. Haha.

I'm taking this next summer before my senior year starts:
Physics
Stat

And then once the school year starts, for senior year I'm planning to taking this:

(maybe) 2 orchestras
academic decathlon
Econ or Gov't? (I'm not sure which one to pick, though.)
AP Stat
AP Literature
Japanese 4 Honors

So literally, I'll have only 4 periods during day, and one of the orchestras is after Academic Decathlon (both are after school classes, and both are all electives lol) Would that be a lot? ohmy.gif

--

Yeah, from what I heard, AP chem is easier than AP Bio at my school .___. I totally sucked at Bio though; I got barely passed with a B- during Freshman year (but that was because I never tried...and I slept it class most of the time). I took chem last year and I didn't EVEN try, I still got an 87.89% (I didn't want to get an A until 2 months before school ended lmao). So yeah, maybe if I actually DO TRY this year, and no procrastinate, THERE IS A CHANCE I can get at least B's right? And pass AP exams? Maybe? :'D

@ 'laugh-cry-smile' - yeah, I remember doing o-chem! It was ridiculous for me since I had a hard time understanding it. But then eventually my friend re-explained it to me, so I got like 90% of it.

Take gov't, it's easier. Unless you actually like complicated graph figures and curves in economics.

And DON'T underestimate AP chem. This isn't pre-AP chem where your teacher held your hand and spoon-fed you into memorizing chemical structures, element symbols, or polyatomic ions.
AP Chem is rigorous and it's going to keep being very difficult until you breathe your very last sigh of relief after your AP test in the spring. From equilibrium to kinetics to thermodynamics to electrochemistry and so on, it never gets any easier.
But I'm not trying to scare you though, the class is really interesting with its labs and demonstrations (I love love love the titration labs with potassium permanganate and phenolphthalein biggrin.gif) Just letting you know that this is NOT a class you want to sleep in if you actually want to pass at all. I've seen a lot of people take AP chem just because they did decent in pre-AP and thought it was the same, only to totally bomb the class mid-semester and begging our teacher for another chance with extra credit (which you would never ever get in college btw).

Of course, I know. It just that last year's chem class was more easier on me because of my teacher. I totally know what I'm going to go through...I mean obviously..It's AP lmfao. I hear the labs take a long time though...to the point where you have to stay after school?

If you enjoy science and excel at go for it. If you are a science major in college (especially Bio) there is a good chance you would have both of these classes at the same time in college.

The rick is to be disciplined with your time. The chem labs can be very time consuming so be sure to use your time efficiently.

The advantage of taking them both at the same time is that some of the concepts will overlap, making it easier to learn the concept in both classes.

Good luck

woah. one Thing that was recommended of us was never to take AP Chem and AP Bio at the same time.
That’s mainly a reason why I took AP Chem junior year and AP Bio the next.
AP Chem is not a class to sleep in, definitely not. It may start of simple in the begining becuase everything is like a review then you go into kinetics and electrochemistry and pH and we did organic chemistry( my favorite, no lie! xD I actually liked it). Not to scare you but it’s something you have to understand at the spot. It’s not memorization it’s basically understanding and applying.
I had friends who took AP Bio, a lot of them get stressed. It’s a lot of memorization and we have to read more than a chapter each week. I took 3 AP classes a year with honors classes and I am taking 3 this year. And I basically balanced it out with junior year APs by taking, 1 science, 1 history, 1 english. Then senior year 1 sciene, 1 math, 1 english. I have all the classes every single day until the end of the school year, so with that in mind I have other assignments and papers that I have to complete and submit.

Not to mention, come by AP testing week, you’ll be a zombie (maybe). I’m not sure, but I think this year it was Bio one day and Chemistry the next. It will be hard to study for those two because they come consecutively.

But if you can handle it, and are doing well then go for it. No one is stopping you, but you should know your limits and what you can handle and what you cannot. A lot of people I know make that mistake so in the end they don’t get the best results that they think they would get.

Yea a lot of labs are really long where you do them for several days and if you still can't finish then you have to come after to school and finish.
Some labs are so long that you have to come to school on Saturday and finish the lab in one day (Saturday AP sessions). The titration labs are like these.

AP Bio has a lot of cool labs too like the electrophoresis lab and or E. coli culturing with Ampicillin (I think that's AP Bio or it could be medical microbio, not sure...... rolleyes.gif )

take gov its loads easier lol. I took econ as a junior and am taking gov as a senior and I'm really regretting that haha
In Econ you have to get your head / thoughts around all these considerations & calculations while government is plain memorizing. kinda like biology.

Decath, i'm taking that too. Yeah it's an "easy class" since it's grades are based off the competition material
but theres a lot of competition material and its not an easy read. if you're planning on seriously competing then it'll be quite time consuming too.
