So, my family being super Vietnamese (Ok, stereotypical but yes) we eat our fruits with SALT.
My grandpa used to be a doctor and he told me eating Watermelons with salt helps digest the fruit, but... otherwise that my family still eats almost all our fruits (besides fruits like bananas, papaya, and some others) with salt.

Sometimes we even mix our salt with Chili Garlic Sauce

and make something called Muối ớt in Vietnamese and it basically translate to salt chili or chili salt.
And it looks like this:

My grandma usually cuts up our pineapples and put them in a bowl and mixes salt in with it.

For Vietnamese, I've only seen this once and my cousin does it a lot, she mixes sugar and fish sauce and sometimes a little chili in with it and she eats like plums *that look like cherry.

Also, sometimes Vietnamese take mangoes (the harder kind) and soak it in spicy/ salty water, it's almost like pickling the fruit, tastes good.

Does anyone happen to eat their fruits with Salt?

> I get weird stares when I eat my fruit with salt...
( Mods: I'm not sure if there's already been a thread on this, so please close if there is. )

PS I don't want to make it sound like I'm making this an all-Vietnamese thing, just stating that I've tried/ seen these things ONLY because I've seen it at Vietnamese locations or through my own family taste.

salty and spicy.
except I don't use garlic chili like you do though, I use a whole chili pepper and smash it into a bowl of salt until the salt turned red/orange. drools.

over here they don't have those exotic fruits like in Southeast Asia
this is best with crunchy fruits like tra'i O^?i or Co'c.
Rest in Peace Michael Jackson.

^ ahh, my aunt does that, it's must more fresh with the actual ot.
Oh yes, my great-aunt lives in Cali and she sends over trai oi from time to time but i've never eaten it with the muoi ot.
When you eat it with white peach when the fruit is still very crunchy it's the best. (:

I'm vietnamese and I do that too. laugh.gif
I eat apples, watermelon, plums, nectarines, etc. with salt, or sometimes with Mexican chili powder (like Lucas).
It's pretty good, but so unhealthy. x__x

o_o That's a little strange, but not unheard of I guess. I don't eat my fruit with salt but I've heard of other people doing that.

Salt only works for sour fruits I think.
I eat it with pineapples and oranges and other fruits.
But I don't think I could eat watermelons with salt.

they serve watermelon with salt at some restaurants..
i always thought the salt was only to draw out the watermelon flavour.
never thought about eating salt with other fruits.
Shh..did you hear that?
