Some say you shouldn't trust anyone on the internet.
Some say you shouldn't believe anything on the internet.

It is "naive" to believe that you can trust anyone or anything on the internet. Note the use of the word "any" which may imply ALL members of a set, or SOME members of the set, or even ONE member of the set (which in this case would be anyone or anything on the internet).

Is it really that naive to put a little trust in someone that you met online? Maybe a guildmate in some MMORPG, or some guy you met on a chess site and play regularly. Or even someone on soompi forums.

yes it is naive, at times you can't even fully believe or trust someone you know in real life.. then how can you do so if it's someone you met off the internet? makes no sense.. unless that person over the internet is also "naive". but i doubt it.

actually it doesn't even matter.. if you think they are telling the truth, believe so, but better off to keep in mind that there is an 50/50% chance they are lying.

It's naive to trust anyone that you don't have a solid background for be it online or not. You can take a person's word for whatever because what else can you do.

That being said the majority of the people on the internet are there for the same reasons you are, education and entertainment. There are creeps of course but they are not the majority.

When I was in elementary school, I would always play MMORPG with my older cousin, and he would always tell me if anyone says he/she as in the character is a girl in real life, than they are lying and never trust them. I asked him why, he told me that there are no "there are no girls" on the internet. There are times when I do trust others on MMORPG with my account, they would give me their account. I know I wouldn't scam anyone because that is just me, but I don't know about the other person. In the end, he took my account, lucky that game was boring I only spent 1 week playing it.

I don't really trust anyone on the internet. Cause I know if I don't trust anyone, than I won't get in trouble. It's only when we put our trust in people that we become vulnerable. I would rather not trust anyone, even if it's someone from this forums. I'm sorry, if I can't see you than I can't trust you.

I agree with DreamingSaturn on this one. Then again even outside of internet, people can still be lying to you...sadly...

Depending on the sourcing and site I get my information off of, I'll believe some things. I usually believe in the things I like and disregard the things I don't like on the internet, hoping it's fake haha. As for people, I'm not one to trust someone on the internet, who could be posing as a completely different person than how they are in real life. I need to know a person and have seen them face to face to even begin to think of trusting them.

It is naive to put 100% trust in someone you have met over the internet

even 75% trust is a lot ~

I mean over the internet you can be who-ever you want to be
Say anything etc
EVen use different pictures or non at all
So why would you want to trust in them?

You should only start trusting them once you've met

Here's the thing with people ; On the net, whoever you talk to probably doesn't know who you are (exclude like aim or what not, talking about forum wise) so sometimes we don't really know if the person is a liar themselves or they're actually saying true stuff. Of course it would be ignorant to say every secret of yours to someone else but hey, it's your choice if you want to tell them whatever's on your mind.

It's not naive, more like moronic. There's a reason why it's called the Internet, it's an imaginary world. You can be whoever you want to be on the Internet.

Even when you've met them, that doesn't mean you're going to know who they are. You can be whoever you want to be offline as well. Some say you won't be able to keep up the act forever, but that's not true lol

Obvious thread is obvious.
Of course it is, but in theory, it's a little bit naive to put any amount of trust in anyone.

it's naive to put enough in trust in anybody/everything in real life as well.
obviously, the internet wouldn't be the best choice to place your trust.

the internet is populated with a plethora of demented/deceptive people.

whether or not the lie was intended, it occurs quite frequently in the e-realm.

but.

for some people, it's easier to be honest about themselves online than in real life

it's not don't trust anyone you meet online, just be wary of people who's face you can't see. i mean if you met someone in real life who always wore a mask... would you trust them?

everyone you meet online is a real person (probably, technology isn't THAT great yet), but even in real life, there's a chance that your next door neighbor is a pedophile.

HA! never trust ANYONE you meet online with your account information. there's so many scams going on with mmorpgs, i mean hell, i scammed quite a few people out of items as well. there's plenty of ways to do it too. but unless it's someone you know in real life, don't give your account away. some scams are friend scams, they befriend you, develop the friendship for months, the other person might even have your account information for a while too before one day you log on and everything's gone. just don't do it. i didn't even trust my roommate with my WoW account information and i've known that dude since high school
