Model United Nations (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In standard Model UN, students take on roles as diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies has fallen under the umbrella of "Model UN," even if they are completely unrelated to the United Nations or even international affairs. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.

Any soompiers who attended any MUN conference? I attended one last April in San Francisco (Model United Nations of the Far West) and I sat at the General Assembly for Gabon (West Africa). We were also supposed to go to National Model UN in NY but our school backed out since our expenses would've doubled (I spent loads since I'm from the Philippines. The air fare is so expensive) and would be too tedious for us since we had to prepare for two countries instead of just one.

I would want to attend other MUN simulations in the future but I'm almost graduating (March 2010) so probably I won't stand a chance anymore since the registration is per school, not individual. But anyway, I had so much fun in this conference. I learned a lot and made me more passionate on my major (International Studies - International Politics).

I haven't seen a thread here about MUN, so I guess its ok to take the initiative to make one? And oh some MUN simulations are also open to HS students but I hope it's fine to post it in this section since its mostly for college students. Any questions about in any MUN and how it goes may be posted here. Would also like to meet people who are interested in this kind of activity.

I actually tried out for the Harvard MUN in Taiwan (March 2010) but I wasn't able to prepare well for the screening so I failed it.
