Here's are the ones I've finished and loved:
- Lord of the Rings trilogy (J.R.R. Tolkien)
- Shannara series (Terry Brooks) <3 <3 <3
- Godspeaker trilogy (Karen Miller)
- Sword of Truth series (Terry Goodkind)
- Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling)
- Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis)
- His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) - this is the book that got me into fantasy novels when I was little
I'm currently reading these:
- Fionavar Tapestry (Guy Gavriel Kay)
- A Game of Thrones (George R.R. Martin)
- The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever (Stephen R. Donaldson)
Looking for new ones to read.. I prefer series because I like the story to go on and on. I don't mind too much if the writing sucks if the story is there and it's fast-paced and exciting. =P Any recommendations?

I love Discworld. My favorites are Thief of Time, Small Gods, Hogfather, Going Postal. Other fantasy books that I love are
Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere,
Emma Bull's War for the Oaks,
Holly Black's Valiant,
Christopher Golden's The Veil series
There are others but these are the ones that I remember most right now.

The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix
Sevenwaters Triligy by Juliet Marillier
The Borderland books by Lorna Freeman
The Samaria & The Twelve Houses books by Sharon Shinn
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
The Ledgend of Drizzt by R.A. Salvatore
There are more but I'll leave it at that for now, oh you can always check out Robin Mckinley books, she's what got me into the whole fantasy/sci-fi thing with her re-telling of Beauty and the Beast and Deerskin is a must read if you do read her books! And I just finished reading The Name of Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, a really good book and the first in a series.

Discworld - I actually have a couple books from the series that I haven't started yet but is it one of those series you have to read in order?
Sevenwaters Triligy - I realized I have the first book to this trilogy. Going to start this next week!

The Name of The Wind - Patrick Rothfuss - it's part of a trilogy "The Kingkiller Chronicle" the first two are out. It's definitely different. I love how they make magic appear somewhat scientific. I haven't read the second book yet. It's an easy read and I like the humor. It doesn't seem like an author's debut but it is. Usually I skim big books, but this one, I cherished every page
Mistborn trilogy- Brandon Sanderson - this is another new author. It's easy to read as well. It's about a group of individuals trying to overthrow their ruler - who calls himself their god. Religion and politics are the main ideas explored.
Heroes Series - Moore, Moira J. if you're in the mood for a funny romance fantasy novel. The main character is a woman who is very stoic and calm.. I really enjoyed it

Harry Potter is great.
The Magician's Guild etc. by Trudi Canavan - her follow up wasn't as good, but I still love this trilogy.
Janny Wurts 'Curse of the mistwraith' etc, is long, repetitive and not much happens, but it was very addicting (maybe because in my mind the two main characters resembled Jamie Bell and Charlie Hunnam).
Belgariad/Mallorean, David Eddings - couldn't get into his other works though, but these are elementary fantasy.
I've recently decided to stop starting unfinished series, because they're killing me.
Single novels:
Stardust, neil gaiman
The time traveller's wife, audrey niffeneggar?
The autumn castle, kim wilkins

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series was made into a TV show too (Legend of the Seeker). I was soo excited but I watched the first episode and couldn't get into it. The books were funner to read and you just can't fit everything that happens in a TV show.
I'm excited to see how A Song of Ice and Fire will turn out too but won't be surprised if it's disappointing.

Not really, though there are recurring characters like Rincewind and Death. I'm currently working through Interesting Times.
And if you're trying out Gaiman's stuff, he's famous for The Sandman series, though his novels are also excellent (American Gods, Stardust, Neverwhere, etc). Good Omens is a collaboration with Pratchett - lovely stuff.

I haven't read Sword of truth, or seen the tv show, but from what I've heard, the tv series is nothing like the books. From what I've heard about Game of Thrones (like the leaked pilot draft), it will stick closely to the original plotline, and each book will equal one season. It's also being done by HBO, so the more adult content of the series can be kept in and it won't be dumbed down for the kids. And, with all that, and the cast that's been chosen, I will be surprised if the tv show is disappointing. Right now, it has everything going for it.

Alma Alexander's The Hidden Queen and Changer of Days
Kristen Britain's Green Rider series
Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series
Tamora Pierce's Protector of the Small series -- this one is YA Fantasy, but still very good.
C.L. Wilson's Tairen Soul series
Guy Gavriel Kay is a great writer... have you read his other books? I would suggest Tigana (though it's a standalone, it's very good)
