hey guys im looking to get a new camera because the camera i just got Canon Powershot SD790is doesnt take pics as well as my old beat up Sony and i found out its because the imaging sensor size on the Canon is smaller than the Sony.

Can anyone give me a list of digicams with sensor size of 1/1.8' or higher? 1/2.3' or 1/2.5' wont do cus thats what the Canon has.

Sensor size isn't necessarily an indication of image quality...

I think you might be intrigued by premium digital compacts, like the canon powershot G10/G11, the Nikon P6000, or the higher end Panasonic Lumix cameras (they have beautiful lenses).

Definitely look at the Panasonic Lumix. I have one (got it a year and a half ago for $200) and it takes beautiful pictures, the quality of lens is great (Leica lenses are quite expensive). However, due to my carelessness and stupidity, I got dust on the sensor and a scratch on the lens. I really want to take it into fix it.

Sigma DP2? Image quality is amazing, but that might be way beyond your price range though. (It's sure past mine.) I heard the new Canon S90s were pretty stellar. They're new and sold out from Amazon so that might be a good indication. It's also a f2 lens, so will be pretty useful in low-light.

Like some others suggested: look into Panasonic Lumix cameras.

i think the quality of photos that a digicam takes depends on megapixels and how you work your camera.

not necessarily, megapixels are only useful if you're going to crop, or make bigger prints, or you're going to lose quality due to increased challenges with noise.

Megapixels don't mean anything. Are you really going to print a photo the size of a poster? Compared to megapixels, sensor size is a much better indication of image quality. However, sensor size isn't everything -- the lens is the most important factor in the sharpness of the image. I kind of think the OP is worrying about sensor size to the point of being OCD. If you really want a camera with a large sensor size, the Sigma DP1 or DP1s or DP2 might be your thing. The Canon S90 is good too -- big sensor size (1/1.7") and a great lens.
