i know this topic sounds extremely silly and a no-brainer, but i'm just seeking for some tips that will improve my reading.

i'm a first year student and one course that i'm taking is for history. we're pretty much required to read 75+ pages at least before the lecture or recitation. in high school, we were never required to read that much and if we did a read a history textbook, the paragraphs would be small with about 8-12 pages to read.

i wouldn't say that i read slow like a snail, but i guess i read at a leisure pace.

because of my pace, i also try to absorb a lot of details, but they just don't seem to stick.

so i was just wondering, does anybody have any tips that could possibly help me improve the rate i read at or just remembering a lot of details? i try to skim (maybe i'm doing it wrong), but i find that i don't seem to grasp everything when i skim.

It's easier to read the "white spaces" between the words.
It's difficult to do at first though.
Staring at the letters of a word can strain a person's eyes.
I think your eyes will feel less tired if you read by looking at the white spaces.
And you will read faster too.

Ex.
[ ]It's[ ]easier[ ]to[ ]read[ ]the[ ]"white[ ]spaces"[ ]between[ ]the[ ]words.[ ]

Or if you are really good.

The white space inside the brackets are what you are supposed to look at only lol.

You can find books on speed reading everywhere, and I've personally used those books as well as computer programs. My reading speed right now is about 700-800 wpm average.

If you don't feel guilty about pirating, go to piratebay, and search up 'eyeQ'

If not, then go to the library or bookstore and theres books about the subject.

This is especially useful for something like novels, but when its history or science when you need to memorize a lot, you'd best read at a slower pace and take notes.

I first look at what I have to do for other classes. One thing that helps me is to keep a schedule of everything I do (besides the nature stuff of course lol). One thing that helps me is to split the pages up. Right now I'm reading a lot with a sociology class and it's a lot of stats stuff and can be so boring and a fight to keep your mind focus. So I'll count how many pages are in a chapter and will split them in half. If my brain starts to get tired and wanders I will stop for a while and listen to something relaxing or entertaining and just do something enjoyable or take a nap. Don't keep reading if your brain is wandering and fighting to stay on topic. I've also found by splitting the pages up like that I remember things better and I also take notes and if it's something that I think might be important whether a test or just in general in the future I write it down and I find I remember that better too. It's really about you and finding what works best for your studying habits. smile.gif Oh and I have to have quiet as well. If not I listen to like new age type music. Nothing with speech.

what my social science teacher taught me in high school; for textbooks;
read ALL the headings and subheadings and bolded words.. prob get a gist of what you're reading

what my bro taught me; for articles;
read the first few para's to see what they're talking about and the last few paragraphs for a summary of the whole thing

what i do:
do all of the above and try to skim for important parts [ie skipping statistics and heading straight to results]

this isn't about speed, but for retention, it helps me a lot if i use fancy highlighters and colored pens and colored flags to mark important points. also motivates me, cause i want to use my fancy/cute tools. smile.gif

(yes, i am lame)
