Hello,
I"m blocked out of many classes due to a mandatory writing course. I just transferred as a sophmore. I need to take economics, but is it wise to take them both at the same time?

Doesn't make much of a difference imo. The topics don't have heavy overlap as they are different topics. One focuses on the economy from a smaller scale and the other on a large scale view.

yeah, what Hax said. macro is incredibly easy and if you get a good professor, it's going to be extremely interesting. micro is a lot more complicated than macro but not difficult. i don't see why you can't take both at the same time unless you don't like reading massive chapters for class.

I think it's fine if you take them at the same time, but personally think it'd be wiser to take micro first.
I understood macro a lot better because I had a great micro professor.
Most of the kids in my macro class forgot micro stuff though, so the prof went over it.
Hopefully you get great professors for both, or sign up for tutoring or something.

If you took econ in high school and plan on taking the two together, that should be helpful. smile.gif
The micro skills in macro aren't hard...

Econ at my school is extremely difficult for most students, and they only take one class. I think in my class about 50% of students got an F (remember, that's not including any D's). I would suggest taking macro only, then take micro after you've completed macro. My friend did that and she got A's and B's.

well, i would do it to just get it over with.
but at my old uni, one was a pre requisite for the other so i wasn't allowed to take both at the same time.
you might want to double check with your uni.

Don't know your academic ability so it's hard to say. But if you've taken it in high school already and did well, then I don't think it's a problem. However, if you've never taken it before, then I strongly, strongly recommend taking one to get your feet wet and get a general sense. Then take the other class later. Also, make sure that one class isn't a prerequisite for the other.

I remember when I was first exposed to macro in high school in 12th grade. Sat in front of the class but had no idea what was going on and ended up with a B- or C (pretty big blow since I was one of those crazy, overachiever students). But when I got to college, I immediately took it my freshman year while the materials was still fresh in my mind and got an A in macro and A- in micro. Curving did help though tongue.gif laugh.gif

I think macro & micro have a bad rap as being hard. It's best not to think those classes are hard but go in with a willingness to learn. Don't listen to the horror stories. Just work hard, and if necessary, go to tutoring or get help from the professors. Then you'll do fine. No different than other classes, really. OK, might be a teeny bit harder, but you'll have some easy classes too, I'm sure laugh.gif

thank you for all the replies. There's no prereq here, so I can take both. After attending both lec, I realized it is better to stick with one because economics has never been offered in high school. Really, thank you for all the insights
