- slower metabolism. Me and my mum (who's 50) have similar builds, and go to the gym together. But I need around 2500 calories, while she requires about 1600.
- skin loses elasticity - especially if you had stretched out skin at some point (because of pregnancy, or been overweight) if you lose weight, your skin doesn't bounce back. Some people haul around rolls and rolls of skin, but are actually quite skinny.
- bad habits catch up - if you don't care of yourself when you're young, well, say hello to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease etc. If you smoke, also say hello to reduced lung capacity etc. All making sure you're out of shape, and reluctant to work out.
- even more bad habits catch up - didn't work out while young? Well, muscle is "use is or lose it". The more you lose, the less calories you require, the more you gain.
- normal age-related gain - people gain weight (not fat) while growing old. Its normal, and healthy. But it does make you heavier.
- bad luck - if you do gain, as a man, it's most likely in the gut. Women can get away with gaining in their boobs, or asses, or all over, but guys predominantly gain there.

My p.e teacher is def over 35 and he's got an awesome body. His job is to encourage kids to exercise and eat healthy so that's why. On the other hand, when I look at the maths or english teachers... lol

Tony Horton is 47 ? I think he is the p90x person p90, p90x advanced and 10 minute trainer dood.
A lot of guys just get fat and all the negative things listed in the earlier posts because of neglect. Girls tend to start neglecting themselves in college.

but yeah, it's probably mostly because of slower metabolism in combination with an unhealthy diet. Or too much beer...haha

People who are fat early in life and then got fit tend to keep it
That seems to be the case for me anyway(The way I see it)

I see it that way a lot too ^^ A lot of people in my family were like that.. my uncles and my dad were fat when younger, now they're in shape. o_o
I think someone told me once, that when you're over age 30 or something, you lose 5 lbs of muscle a year if you don't keep working out.
That means, if you stay the same weight every year you're actually gaining fat and losing muscle.

it's 1 pound a year with the daily no-exercise lifestyle that most people have. at 5 pounds a year... you wouldn't be able to move after a decade
