I apologize for being ignorant, but is it actually true? My mom tells me to unhook my bra when I sleep at night but I never do it because I feel uncomfortable. It kinda makes me feel vulnerable. :/

A book called, Dressed to Kill did a research on this
Here are some of their findings:

* Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer.

* Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day, but not to bed, had a 1 out of 7 risk.

* Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 52 risk.

* Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer.

and this article was from another site also based on Dressed to kill
http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/bracancer.html

But according to cancer.org
There are no scientifically valid studies that show wearing bras of any type causes breast cancer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When i was back in HS, i think i was curious about this as well lol and i read some articles and did some research. It just seemed to be that going braless was better than going with a bra even if its not a proven cause for breast cancer because if wearing a bra 24/7 gives even the slightesttt tiniest chance of getting breast cancer, id rather not risk it. So ever since then I've been probably only wearing my bra for 6hrs +, usually only when i go out but once i get home, its bye bye bra! Since im only an A cup (*tear) i dont need the bra for much support anyways.

So if u feel comfortable with you bra, leave them on biggrin.gif

Try wearing a cami when you sleep? That's what I do. It's enough support so that they don't fly all over the place when I'm tossing around in bed, but it's not restrictive either. (:

not to sound perverted, but if you wear your bra for extensive periods of time you're supposed to massage them for like five minutes before you go to bed. how do i know this? ummm.. i, uh, read it, uh in a seventeen magazine, lol

I used to take my bra off to sleep but not anymore, takes too much work and I hate the feeling of them hanging.
^ And I heard that too, you're supposed to massage your breasts cause it's good for them or sth xD I heard if
you massage your breasts, they'll get bigger but IDK if it's true or not.

I wouldn't think too much of the Dressed to Kill stats.

I mean, there are a lot of other factors they just can't disregard. For example, what population were those stats taken from? If it's a worldwide figure, there are many cultures that go without bras and thus may be exposed to different environments/foods/genetics than elsewhere. There's also the fact that most larger chested women CAN'T go without a bra, so most of the women in the 24 hour period might be C cups and above, while the ones that don't wear bras all the time are most likely the As and Bs of the world. It is entirely likely then that breast cancer could be linked to breast size instead. There are just too many factors outside of wearing a bra that would make this study not very credible.

Yes, wearing a bra does increase your risk of cancer. This has to do with lowering/constricting blood flow to your breast. Estrogen, which is high during a woman's young years, are kept within the breasts with tight bras. During night time, wearing a bra means even more estrogens in the area. This greatly increases the risk of cancer. This is also why oral contraceptives also have a risk of increasing chance of getting breast cancer.

I think a study was posted here a few months back. I think a woman who wears a bra 24/7 has 4 times higher chance (or was it 8) to get breast cancer than a person who wore like 12 hours a day.

I agree, but you can't ignore statistics. ONE woman in EIGHT in America will develop cancer sometime in their lives. I know 3 people who have already gotten it.

http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=119 (read BRCA genes)

moot and void =P I think i trust the american cancer society more than a book, emphasis on a, that had irrelevant studies, the room for human error, want to further debate? i'll take you on :]

@kuku: links or book reference to studies or your argument is void

I always heard about this; and sometimes I believe the statics.
Although it seem like a myth to me.
I'm use to wearing it; although cancer does scare me, but there isn't any scientific solution about it. And I think other more ways can cause it, like your genes.

My bra is never too tight; I hate it; I usually wear it tight when its strapless which is really rare; since its for halter tops or dresses.

So seem like a myth to me for now.
