SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) -- Organizers of the Daejong Film Awards, South Korea's only state-funded film contest, announced 54 candidates Wednesday including the Cannes-invited "Mother" and box-office smash "Haeundae."

The 46th Daejong awards ceremony, one of the oldest and the most prestigious in Korea, will be held on Nov. 6 after a 10-member jury chooses winners in 28 categories including best film, director, actor and actress, the event's organizing committee said.

Fifty people, chosen among applicants aged 18 and older, will be taking part in choosing the awards for leading and supporting actors and actresses.

Established in 1961, the first Daejong awards ceremony was held in 1962. The state-run Motion Pictures Association of Korea currently organizes the event.

Last year's top honor, the Grand Bell Award, went to director Na Hong-jin's thriller "The Chaser."

Ha Ji Won�s Nomination Controversy

Ha Ji Won is undoubtedly one of Korea's most innovative actresses. Despite her ability to play just about any character with depth and flawless emotion, this girl's popular nomination has been dropped from the upcoming 46th Daejong Awards.

The organizing committee for the Daejong Film Awards issued a statement on Thursday, playing down controversy over this year's nominations.

The committee had been under heat since announcing its selections the previous day, particularly over its decision to drop actress Ha Ji-won who starred in two hit films this year but pick Jang Nara whose film is set for release October 29.

The statement started by addressing the debate over Jang's film, explaining that films submitted "must have completed production within the time frame set by the committee and must have been released or is waiting to, to be considered for nomination."

"Accordingly, 'Sky and Sea', which also completed filming within the required time frame, is also eligible for entry," the committee stated. The committee had stated it would look into films produced between May 1 last year and September 4 this year.

It went onto explain how actress Ha had not been nominated for Best Actress. "The awards does not base its judgement on an individual actor but the character the actor plays in the film and the votes may split if an actor starred in multiple films," an official was quoted as saying.

"The decision was based on an absolute scale and the votes for Ha got divided -- the first as the Ha Ji-won for 'Haeundae' and the other as Ha Ji-won for 'Closer to Heaven," the official went on to explain.

Ha had starred in both films this year -- summer blockbuster "Haeundae" which attracted nearly 11.4 million viewers to become the fourth most-watched film of all time and "Closer to Heaven" which topped the box office for three weeks and has grossed over 2 million viewers since opening in late September.

The committee ended its statement by saying it will carry start carrying out its final judging starting October 26 by a panel composed of both experts and the general public.

The awards, now into its 46th year, will take place November 6 at the Olympic Park in Seoul.

A point worth noting about this year's Grand Bell award is that it was pushed back from April to November. Kim Hye-Ja is the favorite to win Best Actress, Choi Kang-Hee received good reviews for her latest performance too.

All 3 films were eligible for this year's Grand Bell. Soo Ae was chosen Best Actress over both SYJ and GHJ at some other award shows last year, sometimes it's a matter of personal preference.

I am quite disappointed as well. I have seen both Haeundae and Closer to Heaven but I think Ha Ji Won's performance in Closer to Heaven is better. So surprising that she was not even nominated

Actress Ha Ji-won said she has no doubts nor suspicions about the Daejong Film Awards organizing committee's decisions for this year's nominations.

Ha made the remark Thursday afternoon following a statement issued by the committee to play down controversy which arose the previous day, particularly over its selection for Best Actress. The committee dropped Ha who starred in two hit films this year but picked Jang Nara whose film has yet to be released.

"I 100 percent respect the authority and fairness of the Daejong Film Awards," the actress was quoted as saying by her agency Wellmade STARM. "I trust that their decision was made through a rigorous selection process under high standards which I fully respect."

Ha added, "I think it is my greatest joy and pride to have received so much love as an actress -- I do not act or work on a film while my goal set as winning a certain award."

She also expressed her thoughts of Jang. "As an actress, I am extremely distressed to see another actress suffer and be hurt due to the controversy surrounding me. I hope this issue settles down soon so that it does not cause other actors to suffer or be hurt any further."

The 31-year-old actress also thanked her fans for the love and support, adding her hopes that this year's awards becomes a great festival for Korean films and her fellow actors.

It's true that Jang Na-Ra's film is eligible, it was among the 54 candidates announced on September 16.

I agree. Some people take these award shows too seriously. Nomination or not, she's already known to be very talented.

Nomination Dispute Mars Daejong Film Festival

Singer-turned-actress Jang Na-ra's nomination for Best Actress at the upcoming Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Festival, the country's most prestigious film awards, has sparked a stormy debate.

The festival's nomination of Jang for Korea's equivalent of the Oscars was met with surprise by many as her film "The Sky and the Sea,'' in which she plays the role of an autistic musician, has yet to be released in theaters. Meanwhile, popular actress Ha Ji-won was excluded from the nomination list despite receiving critical acclaim for roles in two headline-making films this year ― "Haeundae,'' a tsunami blockbuster that became one of the highest grossing films in Korean box office history, and "Closer to Heaven,'' a tearjerker melodrama that also garnered much attention.

In response to public criticism, the festival issued a press release Thursday explaining the circumstances. "The Sky and the Sea was completed within the designated time period to be considered for the awards," the release said. "Well-made films featuring fine acting can be submitted for judgment and are eligible for nomination, even if they have not yet hit theaters.''

Concerning Ha's exclusion from the nomination list, the festival said that "although she delivered good performances in 'Haeundae' and 'Closer to Heaven' the vote was split among judges'' ― meaning that when an actor appears in more than one film in a pool of works submitted for nomination, votes are often split because nominations for best actor/actress are made according to his/her role in a particular film.

Ha Defends Jury

Furthermore, the festival stressed that both Jang and Ha are talented actresses and questioning the confidence of festival will only hurt the local film industry.

Ha expressed her faith in Daejong and its fairness in judgment through an official statement via management agency Wellmade Star M, saying "I do not have an inch of doubt concerning Daejong's fairness.''

"I am truly happy and thankful for all the love and attention I received this year. For each piece I work on, I always think of my shortcomings and only try my best. As an actor, being loved by the audience gives me the greatest pleasure and pride. But I do not perform roles with an award in mind, and I don't think other actors do either,'' she said.

"Another actor has been hurt due to recent controversies over the nominations, and I deeply emphasize with my fellow actor. I hope the negative comments will stop,'' she said.

Meanwhile, Jang makes a comeback on the local screen after long hiatus. She had been based mainly in China with stints in singing and acting. She was chosen as "the hottest actress of 2006'' in a survey conducted by a Chinese broadcasting company over stars such as Gong Li.

Before moving to China, the 28-year-old starred in several hit Korean TV soaps including "Success Story of a Bright Girl'' (SBS, 2002). "The Sky and the Sea'' is due in theaters on Oct. 28.

State-run S. Korean film contest under fire for 'suspicious' candidate selection

SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's only state-funded film contest came under fire again immediately after it announced the candidates for this year's best movie and performers.

Fans and critics here are questioning the selection by the Daejong Film Awards, which left out some of the best-received domestic films released this year.

Some suspect back door dealings between event organizers and film distributors. The contest's reputation was earlier tarnished in 1996 and 2000 over money-for-nomination allegations for three movies including "Henequen."

The 46th Daejong awards ceremony, one of the oldest and the most prestigious in Korea, announced the candidates in 28 categories over the weekend.

While "Sky and Ocean," a yet-to-be-released film starring Korean Wave star Jang Na-ra, was nominated for four categories including best film, best actress and music, some internationally-recognized works including "Thirst" and "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" were omitted.

Actress Ha Ji-won, who starred in "Haeundae" and "Closer to Heaven," two box office smashes this year, was absent among best actress nominees.

Despite her popularity here and also in China, actress Jang has often been criticized for a "childlike" acting style that has limited her roles, unlike Ha who has played multifarious characters.

Shortly after the announcement, movie fans posted criticisms on the event's Web site. Critics also raised question on how a movie that has not even been released was nominated for the two top categories.

"This isn't the first time, and such controversy is hardly tolerable for a film contest that has 46 years of history," one professional film critic said, asking not to be named until organizers officially elucidate the suspicions. "The event is state-funded and organized by people in the film industry. I am frankly ashamed as one of them."

Final candidates for the awards were selected among films that were completed between May 1, 2008 and Sept. 4, 2009. "Sky and Ocean" does meet this part of the requirement.

Actress Jang and her father, who produced the movie, refuted the suspicion as "groundless."

Actress Ha of "Haeundae," which became one of the only five South Korean movies to reach the 10 million viewer-mark, said she "respected the decision" by the Daejong awards organizers.

The Daejong Film Awards will be held on Nov. 6 after a 10-member jury chooses final winners this week.

Established in 1961, the first Daejong awards ceremony was held in 1962. The state-run Motion Pictures Association of Korea currently organizes the event.

Last year's top honor, the Grand Bell Award, went to director Na Hong-jin's thriller "The Chaser."

For whom the Grand Bell tolls?

How many award ceremonies does Korea need to bolster its film industry? For many disillusioned movie fans, the answer might be "the fewer, the better," particularly when a major award is embroiled in a dispute of fairness and a not-so-major one has been cancelled abruptly.

The 46th Grand Bell Awards, Korea's top movie award ceremony, was originally scheduled to take place in June, but its schedule got pushed back to November due to the dearth of entries. Worse, it confronts heated criticism about its selection of nominees.

MBC, a local TV station which organizes the Korea Film Award, said it has decided to cancel the ceremony this year, citing problems in funding. The Korea Film Award had touched off debates about the glut of similar, overlapping film ceremonies in 2002 when MBC went ahead with the project.

But it is not the first time that film awards in Korea suffered criticism. The Grand Bell Awards, known as "Daejong" here, have long been mired in controversy over their selection criteria. The ceremony will be held on Nov. 6 this year, but it remains uncertain whether the selection of awardees will convince skeptical local movie fans.

Last Wednesday, the Grand Bell Awards organizers unveiled the nominees. It was hardly surprising that "Haeundae," a tsunami blockbuster that smashed the box office record this summer, was nominated in nine categories including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. But "Thirst," directed by Park Chan-wook, is strangely absent from the Best Picture nomination list despite its high-profile credentials; instead, "The Sky and the Sea," a film to be released this Thursday, has made it to the list.

Ha Ji-won starred in two notable films this year -- "Haeundae," the highest-grossing film this year, and "Closer to Heaven," a melodrama flick that received critical acclaim -- but she failed to make it to the Best Actress list. The Grand Bell Awards organizers issued a press release last week in response to the growing criticism, defending their decisions. "There is no problem in the nomination process because the movies made between May 1, 2008 and Sept. 4, 2009 are eligible for the awards," the organizers said.

The exclusion of Ha Ji-won was also due to split votes among jury members, the organizers said, adding that Ha's roles in the two films lowered her chance to get nominated despite her impressive performances in both.

Online film communities, however, continue to pour critical postings about the awards, particularly with the nomination of "The Sky and the Sea" in four categories, even though the public reaction is yet to be made about the film's artistic and commercial appeal.

Mindful of the controversy, Jang Na-ra expressed her feelings on Monday in an interview with a local press. "I feel deeply sorry about the incident," she said. "But there was no problem in the application procedure, and I didn't expect this kind of dispute."

Jang said she is willing to accept any criticism from viewers when the movie gets released in Korea, but there is nothing she can do about the public controversy over the nomination. Jang makes a silver-screen comeback with "The Sky and the Sea" after a six-year hiatus.

Ha Ji-won issued a public statement via her production firm Wellmade Star M on Thursday, expressing her confidence in the Grand Bell Awards' nomination process. "I fully respect the fairness of the Grand Bell Awards," she said. "I believe the nomination has gone through a strict process, and I do not have any doubt about the fairness in that process."

Back in 1999, the Grand Bell Awards fell into a similar public controversy, giving awards to a film that was yet to hit local theaters. The next year, a bribery scandal hit the awards ceremony.

It hard to say if the trouble with the awards is sour grapes or if there really is an ongoing problem over the years. Be interesting to go back and see if there similar trouble and comment last year and so forth.
It is clear that Ha Ji Won has been unlucky and her appearing in two films that do well, is actually to the actors disfavour due to split voting, there needs to be a change in the format of the judging system.
Also Jang Nara and Sky and Sea should be sympathised with as the target of those who have something against the Awards or fans of Ha Ji Won, it over the top to attack her and the film, when most have not even seen it to judge by and mainly seem to be attacking it just to vent on.
On that point just how cool is Ha Ji Won for her statement about the 'scandal" one very classy lady. Just wish her supports where as classy, in 'defending' their idol they are only attacking and causing stress to another actress who has done nothing but being an easy target.

"The Sky and the Sea was completed within the designated time period to be considered for the awards," the release said. "Well-made films featuring fine acting can be submitted for judgment and are eligible for nomination, even if they have not yet hit theaters.''

Ha Defends Jury

Furthermore, the festival stressed that both Jang and Ha are talented actresses and questioning the confidence of festival will only hurt the local film industry.

Ha expressed her faith in Daejong and its fairness in judgment through an official statement via management agency Wellmade Star M, saying "I do not have an inch of doubt concerning Daejong's fairness.''

"I am truly happy and thankful for all the love and attention I received this year. For each piece I work on, I always think of my shortcomings and only try my best. As an actor, being loved by the audience gives me the greatest pleasure and pride. But I do not perform roles with an award in mind, and I don't think other actors do either,'' she said.

"Another actor has been hurt due to recent controversies over the nominations, and I deeply emphasize with my fellow actor. I hope the negative comments will stop,'' she said.

Lastly the festival has also said that domination have nothing to do with the actors name { I am guessing meaning reputation} but only on acting/role and story.
